Birdies is the same place it was in the 90s but the name's changed. The layout is fairly atrocious with the tiny 1 1/2 seats inside and the odd empty dance floor/bar area. The bathroom is well, uh, it's pretty gross. The covered open seating is old and always shuffled around poorly. It's okay though because that is the look they are going for. If you want hipster hole in the wall chill hang out vibe, come here. It's not trying to fake it. They have great art on the walls and the bartenders are usually on point as long as you look cool enough. I spent my youth in Five Points and these new kids probably weren't born yet. But that's okay. It's their place now and that's how it feels at Birdies; like I don't belong. No hard feeling my dudes, I was super cool at that age too! read more

It's totally OK that every time I've been here the ladies room smells like vomit, because there's a giant shark on the wall by the bar and the DJ is always some rando balding dude with a sweet music collection on his phone. Various bar patrons will talk to you like you've been friends for months, too, which is kind of amusing, because I don't know where much is in town and I have no idea what they're talking about a lot of the time. I'm 30-years-old. I was dragged here with a group of friends. I was sick. I wasn't drinking. I didn't even bother bringing my purse. They carded only me, not any of my friends, then kicked me out of the bar. I was in the wrong, legally, but reconsider whether it's worth it to pick unnecessary fights with your customers. We wouldnt have left after one round, for one, and we'll definitely never be back. If you like uptight, miserable bartenders, this is the place for you. read more

Birdie's is the best dive bar in Riverside, bar none. River Dogs is great, but they don't serve liquor. Wall St. is its own kind of special, but it's smoky. Birdie's has the best of all worlds, with cheap prices and really bangin' theme nights. Mickey the bartender has become our favorite in the area, and she never hesitates to chill at our corner of the bar and chat. Don't expect craft cocktails, martinis or any other fluff -- this place is the nitty-gritty real deal, and their draft selection is pretty respectable, too. read more

I need to go to this place more. I have been a handful of times and I always have a good time. Just like last night.... The drinks are not poured as strong as I would like them but they are cheap and that makes things better. There is dancing and lots of music that you don't normally hear elsewhere like the smiths. My friend was refused by a bartender because of her racial background. I realize this isn't a reflection on Birdies as an establishment; however, the bartender who deliberately ignored my friend is employed there which is why i'm giving only 1 star. How do I know she was ignored because of her race? Because after 30 minutes of her standing directly in front of this bartender, waiting, she went to another friend who is of the same race as the bartender to get the drink and bartender was "johnny on the spot" with the drink. She was served almost immediately. I really liked Birdies and I always had a great time there before that night. It was one of my favorite places in Riverside. But I won't be back. read more

Was here with friends and family on Halloween night. Had a great time dancing, mingling, looking at all the great costumes. The out door patio is way cool but last night it should have been part of the dance floor, so many people were dancing. Broke down and paid 5 bucks for a drink, but it was a real drink, I was not dissapointed. Water jug near the dance floor, great idea. Overall, it's a dive bar. Drinks are appropriately priced and they have a nice selection of beers. This place attracts an "alternative" clientele of 20-30 year olds. If you fit in that demographic, you will likely enjoy this place. For the rest, it's not unwelcoming, but probably not your scene. read more

Place is ok.. Looks big, but in actuality it's not that big. Cute decor. They have some tables out in the front patio, and some inside. There's a pool table to pass and enjoy time. It does get very smoky in there. I come here once in awhile to enjoy the company of my friends and the music. However, recently I have had a rude encounter with a bartender. The way I look have changed, and the picture on my drivers license was taken 5 years ago, not yesterday! The bartender did not believe it was me. She insisted that I was holding a fake ID. I had to show her everything I had in my wallet that it is me.. I mean seriously, my cards all say the same name! The other bartender had to convince her that it was me since he knew who I was! Anyways... $3.00 drink and tipped her $1.00 and got an attitude from her.. Overheard her telling the other bartender (Monday evening, and the place wasn't crowded) that I only gave her a $1.00!!! With me being a forward person, I had to put her in her place. I told her to get a better attitude and maybe you'll deserve more tip, but right now $1.00 for a $3.00 tab was more than enough. She walked away, while the other bartender just laughed. Yeah, someone needs to realize that $1.00 is more than 20% on a $3.00 bill so be happy! If it wasn't for the smoke and the rude encounter, I would have given this place a 4 star.. read more

Nothing out of the ordinary, and you won't be surprised with anything here other then the people that you might see. Good for people watching. It's a straight hipster's paradise. Although I wouldn't wear anything nice to this bar. Not only for the fact you'll stick out like a sore thumb, but you'll also ruin it. This place has got to be the worst bar in Jacksonville for non-smokers (ok that's debatable). It has a wonderful outside seating area that's usually packed, but even outside the smoke is so bad that it's hard to breathe if you're a non-smoker. The actual bar area is lame. It's terribly small and often times tough to squeeze your way in to get a drink. I certainly wouldn't bring any out of town friends here as a must see dive bar, but more so of a swing in for a few drinks if in the area and bored out of my mind. This is by far our favorite bar in Riverside. Mickey is our favorite bartender, & her coworkers are super friendly & accommodating. She totally rocks! It doesn't matter how difficult your tastes because she can whip something up you'll love with a quickness! The drinks are ALWAYS reasonably priced, & the music isn't divisive. Birdies is my favorite bar in Riverside. You can sit inside or outside on the patio (and not get rained on). The beer and whiskey selection is the best in five points and the staff is always friendly and helpful. I have never been so disgusted in my life. I just left this bar there was a fly frozen inside one of the ice cubes in my drink. I told my waiter and he did nothing. Starlite Cafe no longer serves food, but they do have a full liquor bar! Good place to see local artists' paintings on the wall. They are in a bit of a transition as of this review. A change of management is taking place, and there is much talk of expansion, and a stage for bands. I've been a loyal patron of the Starlite since they opened in 2000. They've had a few changes in concept; from fancy rotisserie chicken dinner place to swarthy rockabilly hang, to the yuppie invasion of 2004 to what it is now, in limbo, no party affiliation, all types present and accounted for. I like it like this. Monday night is Irish Night with Jason Wright spinning(laptopping) anything from Pogues to classic Irish jigs with a few, sometimes obscure, non-Irish tunes thrown in to break it up a bit. Drink specials 8-10pm. Starlite has a somewhat dark, New Orleans style ambiance, and right in the heart of the 5points artist district. 4pm-2am daily. read more

Birdies is actually a pretty damn fun bar and fills an important void in Five Points nightlife for those who don't feel like going to King St. While Five Points has plenty of places to drink, almost all of them are either restaurants or low-key, quieter venues that don't really fit the bill if you want to 'go out' per se. Birdies is an always happening spot with great drink specials and a giant patio. Also a good place to bring your dog - hell I've even seen people bring their dogs inside without anybody batting an eye. DO NOT USE YOUR CARD HERE. for sure don't open a tab, it seems convenient that you can open a tab and get your card back, but you know you'll forget and they'll charge a 20% gratuity. But secondly even if you close it you're overcharged. I spent 9 dollars here, and closed my tab, yet there's TWO charges for them, one for 5 dollars and another for 25 dollars. I understand some places take out a blanket amount of money then return the difference but it's been two days and that's still on my statement. I'm serious when I say I am going back through my statements and receipts and calling about any extra money they've taken. I'm not cheap by any means but this is probably the fourth time I've seen these charges on my card after going here. Use cash only! This is very sketchy, honestly I'll probably get my drinks at a different bar that doesn't try to sneakily steal money, and come here just to dance and mingle. When having friends from out of town; I always take them to birdies so they can get a taste of the scene in Jax. I liked this place because of the music. I'm not sure if it was a jukebox, playlist, or just the radio, but they played a lot of good punk songs. There are two pool tables and an outside section for smoking that has a projection screen. Went on a Tuesday night which is great because it wasn't busy so I was able to enjoy a few games of pool without having to wait for others to finish or other people wanting to play. Yelp calls it a dive bar but I thought it was a cool atmosphere. If you go to Park St I would definitely hit up this spot after O'Brothers (which was really on Margaret) and Wall Street Lounge. read more
