Don't take your loved one to Birchview. Staff is very friendly and they will tell you they can do everything for your loved one. No mater what you ask, the answer is yes. Don't be fooled. We took our loved one there as a respite place until our chosen memory care facility had an opening. He couldn't drink or feed himself and they knew that. He was constantly dehydrated, always was in someone else's clothes, teeth always caked with food and he lost 16lbs in 8 weeks. On our last visit we found him in pain, delirious and completely parched. We called the aid car. In the hospital he was found to have a UTI, be severely dehydrated, and had bruises and cuts all over his body from lots of falls. Dehydration makes you dizzy. After 2 days in the hospital he died! If they could just have fed him and helped him drink fluids.... read more

On October 1, 2012, our family member Ramon 'Ray' Jones (81) was able to wander away from Birchview Memory Care, presumably through an open gate on the grounds. This scenario should not have been possible at a facility specializing in caring for Alzheimer's and dementia patients! Now it is October 12, and Ray has not been found despite extensive efforts by local authorities, family, friends, and the community. Ray was an Alzheimer's patient in residence at Birchview, where he had lived since 2009. The family entrusted Birchview staff and management to protect our family member during these challenging years as he suffered from this terrible disease. Ray is likely deceased, perhaps wandering toward and falling in the nearby river or lake. Perhaps dying in the elements. This is not the end of life care Ray deserved. It is a tragedy. Birchview had serious lapses in their security measures, and does not deserve to be responsible for the most vulnerable seniors. Perhaps there will be a miracle, and Ray Jones will be located. We can only pray for him now, and for his wife, children, grandchildren and all of his loving family and friends. Peace be upon Ray wherever he is. read more

My mother stayed here at this point in her life. I can`t put into words how much I was touched by the staff here. From the front office, from the beginning when it was a scary thing to me, to the end when it was both painful and relieving actually. The caregivers, the nursing staff, everyone was wonderful to my mother and our family. Bringing in pizza`s every so often was only a small way I could show our thanks. I wouldn`t want to single out anyone and let anybody feel slighted, but there were a few my mother grew especially close to. Nothing but beautiful thoughts of her (and our) treatment here. Karen, I am so, SO, SO sorry this happened to you...my heart goes out to you and your family. I worked @ Birchview, and I remember Ray. I was on leave during my pregnancy when this happened...I was appalled when I heard the news. I would sit with Ray during my lunch breaks and we would look at the newspaper together. He would always tell me I had to go golfing with him! As for a review of Birchview... The caregivers really, truly care for the residents and in many cases, love them. I have worked at 4 different facilities, and I can honesty say that Birchview has the sweetest caregivers. This is truly the only upside (though a big one) to this facility. The kitchen it's appalling. The previous dietary manager always provided good meals. This newer one....she served sandwiches for lunch for a month straight, no joke. The other cooks are courteous and surprisingly caring towards the residents. As for my experience being an employee.... Thus facility has to many problems to even say. The Director treats the lower staff like garbage. The Caregivers make very little, only about 30 cents above minimum wage. Most facilities pay at least 10$ per hr. The Dietary manager treats her staff like garbage also, the stag in the kitchen are very disgruntled. Overall, if you want your loved one to live in a place filled with bad vibes, this is the place for you. I worked there on and off for years and I absolutely would never put my family members there.
