We left dinner so happy and satisfied. Natalie was our server and was sweet and helpful when we asked for suggestions. We had the BBQ parsnips- which for a small plate was actually 3 large parsnips which we couldn't finish but the spice and smokiness was delicious! We also got the mushroom risotto (light but savory) and 1/2 portion herb pappardelle with pork ragu (imagine grown up, homemade from scratch baller hamburger helper). We will be back! Great flavors, super tasty- wonderful ambiance. P.S. the sparking/still water option isn't free, it's a bottle for $6. I'm all good for tap water - so make sure to specify. read more

went for brunch, and was very impressed by how beautiful the restaurant was! made a reservation online for Sunday at 10:45 -- was comfortably busy at first, but definitely filled up. enjoyed a pretty good bloody...lightly spicy with lots of seasoning and a good amount of snacks on top. I had the naan flatbread & my date had the rosemary biscuits & gravy. naan was unlike anything I've had before, I loved the ricotta & the egg...wished they gave more of the chorizo spread (seemed too little for the serving). biscuits & gravy was a massive portion, the biscuits & gravy were both nice but not overly flavorful...something in it actually tasted kind of like syrup. what will bring me back & is giving the review four stars is the great service we received. waitress was super friendly & helpful with the menu. when the first meal came, she was extremely apologetic & said that my naan was accidentally delivered to a different table and it would be a few minutes to remake. not only did she apologize 100x's, but she gave me my Bloody for free and a giant glass of champagne. great customer service. read more

Pros: Our server was lovely and thorough and the setting was light and fun. Cons: the menu, which seemed inspired and promising, fell flat in most cases. The bib lettuce and herb salad was tasty and bread basket satisfying, but the beet salad was a bummer with the beets way over-roasted and plating annoying with the chèvre pasted to the bottom of the shared plate making it awkward to serve. The $46 aged rib eye was poorly butchered and oddly seasoned. The pappardelle w pork ragu offered over-cooked pasta and a thin ragu. We were seated at 7:30 and our mains didn't arrive until 8:45, so service was inappropriately slow (maybe explaining the over cooked food). I wish I could say the food was worth the wait. Ultimately, the prices were high, service slow, and food overall disappointing. We were really excited to try Birch and Butcher but it seems like they still have a lot of kinks to work out. read more

I have yet to have anything short of 5 star service, taste, and experience here. Going back in time I found them for the great happy hour pre Covid. Amazing hamburger and drinks etc. Even the to go and quick breakfast is great. The head chef is a shining star for our city, and the fire fed grill is amazing. I had been wanting to try Birch + Butcher for quite some time, so I am so happy that I was finally able to get in here the other week. I stopped in here a little late for a Saturday night dinner with a friend. We decided to sit at the bar with it being completely open and not wanting a small two-person table. We started off with each ordering a glass of the "Jezebel" Pinot Noir. It was very good, and I would definitely recommend if you are a fan of a decent pinot noir. My friend decided to do more of a small plate meal between the two of us since we weren't starving. We started with the housemade bread and it was SO good. They make it fresh there in house and the butter is the perfect amount of salty. We had the charcuterie and cheese board as our second plate and decided to go with the three rather than five choices since it was just the two of us. The board came with two different cheeses that were both delicious as well as one meat. There was also some fruit, nuts and jams/mustard on our board. All of it was very good, but for me it is very hard to mess up a cheese and charcuterie board. One thing I will note is the board does not come with bread, it comes with more of these fresh made crackers that are unleavened bread texture. The crackers were good, but I would highly recommend ordering the bread to go with it! For our last plate, we went with the side dish of meatballs and corn grits. This plate was SO good. If you are a fan of meatballs and especially grits, I would definitely recommend ordering this dish. Was definitely a big surprise as to how good it was. First time in years trying something new in Milwaukee. Wisconsin morel toast with English cheddar. ..1/2 roasted chicken. Everything here is cooked with flame and I'm hoping that the simplicity of preparation translates to delicious. I received 2 leg quarters not 1/2 a chicken. The grilled carrots were awful. Found ourselves here Saturday evening. It was a gorgeous night yet we were the only ones eating outside. The place is hip. The dining room is huge & a bit noisy. The kitchen is open so you can watch them do their magic. We had some wonderful red wines. I don't recall what they were, but our server had great recommendations. The food was fabulous & decadent. There's lard & butter in those ingredients! We started with charcuterie. The meats were really good & complimented each other. There was a homemade sausage that was delicious. Came to Birch for the first time in a long while for Valentine's weekend 2022. We elected to do the 5 course tasting menu with the wine pairings. Food was great! The ricotta pasta and the duck were the stars of the show in my opinion. The strange thing to me was that for $110 for food and $75 for wine, there was zero explanation of what the dishes were or how the wine was selected. Obviously if a scallop is placed in front of you, you know it's a scallop, but there was no discussion or presentation of the food or wine. I think there is big potential here, they just didn't deliver for the price point they were commanding. If they had even an entry-level sommelier stop by the table and say "we selected this wine from location XYZ because the dryness and acidity compliment the scallop," they could make for a really great educational and interactive experience! Instead it was just - here is your food, here is a wine, see you later. When I gave the waitress a chance, asking her about a particular wine and how it was selected, she responded "our chef is very creative" - so there you go! Still delicious, just wanting the restaurant to live up to its potential. read more

Went with two friends for the first time. We tried the bbq parsnips, which were really good. We also tried two salads and three entrees (we shared the parsnips and salads but not the entrees. Two of us had the trout and one had the pappardelle. I ate the trout myself, and it was excellent with one major exception: the salt in the sauce/salsa was overbearing. I did my best to push it off but it really ruined an excellent piece of fish and the broccoli. I think it had a good flavor, but so hard to get past the salt. We had the hand pie for a quick dessert and it was okay, but nothing special (fairly dry). I struggle with good food being over salted to death, hence the 3 stars vs 4 or 5. Service was very good. Great weekend brunch spot - especially if you have kids. They give cute kid activities and adults can still enjoy brunch classics including adult brunch libations. They have something for everyone and good place to get a few things and have brunch tapas style. The lox was amazing as well as the biscuits entree. Kids were good with pancakes and oatmeal. Absolutely love the food at Birch + Butcher. I've been here a few times and I always forget how long it takes to get in and out the door. Don't go on a night when you have other plans--the food is meant to be enjoyed slowly and you can order plates to share and arrive when they're ready. I've had Birch + Butcher on my radar for a while now since I live fairly close. However, each time I looked at the menu I felt a little underwhelmed and would go elsewhere. Later one Saturday night not wanting to cook late we spontaneously drove past and decided to stop and get a cheese plate and some wine. Things escalated quickly. We didn't have a reservation and despite the wait we were able to sit within a half hour. We got the dry-aged steak, the Cesar salad, a cheese board, and the roasted potatoes. Except for the cheese board none of these things I would usually get, let alone pay a lot of money for. But we got them as we saw other tables getting them because they looked amazing. And they were. I don't like Cesar salads or get them because I think they are a waste of money but whatever dressing they put on is amazing. The steak was out of this world. The potatoes were everything I want in a potato - very crispy with salt and extremely flavorful. I highly recommend ordering all three to share. The cheese/meat board is nice because you can pick 3, 6, or 9. They give you practically a half brick of cheese as 1 option. I have now been here twice and without a doubt this is one of my favorites. Everything on the menu is delicious. Recently I went around noon. Since I made a reservation we were seated right away. I got the latte with vanilla while my friend got the Japanese iced coffee. Both options were phenomenal. I loved my latte so much I even got a second one, which I have never done! I got the creamy polenta for my dish. The meat was cooked extremely well and had such a good flavor! the polenta was done perfectly. my friend and I shared the French toast. I literally stopped midsentence while I was eating it. That's how good it was. I cannot stop talking about how much I enjoyed it while I ate it in about 30 seconds flat. as my friend said " Bring someone here if you want to impress them and show them a great meal!" This is a definitely a culinary experience. The food here is art. This isn't a meal you just pound down, you will appreciate it more if you come prepared to savor unexpected flavors and combinations and expect quality over quantity. Experienced Birch + Butcher for the first time today and it was lovely! The location is nice but parking can be tricky since it's right off of Water St. and that neighborhood has blown up lately. The space it self is super dreamy. Light and airy with tons of natural light. We went for lunch so you go to the counter to order which is totally fine. The menu is kind of limited but everything looks amazing. I ordered the Avocado Toast (sans the pickled beets, added a fried egg) and it was massive! Super thick cut of ciabatta, and entire avocado, pickled onions, greens and a fried egg - it was amazing and so filling. The homemade pop tarts looked fantastic and were also huge (as they should be for $5) and if I wasn't so full from lunch I totally would have gotten one. I will definitely come back and am super interested in trying the dinner menu in the near future! read more

We went to the birch and the butcher this weekend and I thought the execution and theme was right on point. There were a few surprise highlights. As a side the server enthusiastically suggested parsnips and was unusually excited about them which we were a bit hesitant about. As it turns out the side dish was the star of the evening. I'm still throughout my day thinking of that dish! I also was super stoked that the coffee of choice was Dark Matter. Prices were also pretty reasonable (all things considering.). We had brunch on a Sunday morning and sat at the bar. We had a reservation although we didn't need it at 10:15 AM. The hostess seated us at a sunny table and was more than accommodating when we asked to move to the bar so that we didn't have the sun in our eyes. We typically like to sit at the bar anyways. The bartenders were attentive and had good food recommendations. I'm pretty sure everything on the menu is good- it was definitely hard to choose what to eat. I settled on the Naan Bread, Chorizo, N'duja, Poached Egg with Ricotta. Though it doesn't look filling, I was stuffed and happy. My husband had Rosemary Biscuits, Sausage + Charcuterie Gravy + Poached Egg and that was just fabulous as well. I had a grapefruit mimosa which could definitely get me in trouble, because it went down so easily- yum! We will definitely be back for lunch or dinner soon. This place would be great solo or with a group. Lots of options for people with different food preferences. The outdoor patio is such a great space! I was unexpectedly disappointed in last night's food. The BBQ parsnip was fibrous, undercooked and frankly inedible. C'mon guys! This appetizer needed more prep cooking time, it was hasty and flavorless, and the sloppiness is uncharacteristic of what we have come to count on at B+B. This review is specifically for brunch. We came here with some friends who had been to birch and butcher for dinner before, and have raved about. However, our brunch experience was just meh. The brunch menu isn't very large, which would have been fine if they had allowed substitutions or more vegetarian options, or even a pancake or French toast option. The only vegetarian option on the brunch menu when we went was the avocado toast and like beets, how about a frittata or chilaquiles, or anything heartier. And considering how expansive you can make brunch with just a few ingredients, I thought that was odd. We perused the menu and they have a strict no substitutions policy, so I ended up having to order the birch breakfast - two eggs, bacon, potatoes, sausage, and toast for a whopping $16 when I didn't even need the meat. My boyfriend enjoyed his lamb tartare and the meats from my breakfast but some of the plates were definitely overpriced. The potatoes were amazing but the rest of the breakfast was average. They didn't even offer us ketchup, salt & pepper, or preserves for the meal, we had to seek it out ourselves. Overall it was fine, but I don't think we'd come back for brunch. read more

Unfortunately the meat, which is supposed to be the star of the show fell flat. The meatballs were over cooked and dry and the pork was bland. The wine and cocktail list is extensive. The atmosphere here is incredible, that in itself is worth the visit. Unfortunately we had a mishap with our order but the servers definitely made up for this and gave us a great incentive to come back--which I will! I love that they have a cafe in here that you can order from with amazing coffee. It's a little pricey for what you get and they don't do modifications very well but it is a great place to experience especially for a special date or getting drinks with friends. read more

I've had dinner here and it was really good. I would come back to try the dinner again. But what I really came to write about was the brunch I had today. This was the best breakfast lox I've ever had. It was a trout lox and it was oily, melt-in-your-mouth deliciousness. It came with an everything bagel, greens, capers, cream cheese, red onion jam and charred tomato. The combination of all the flavors on the bagel was outstanding. I also had grapefruit mimosa with a dash of OJ which was very refreshing. My buddy shared his naan with me. That was awesome. Also had a few bites of the steak and eggs. Also awesome. Not a big brunch fan as I feel like places just use up all the leftovers from the night before, but this place was tops for brunch. Will return with my wife. read more

Update 3/17/2018: had their brunch and it was really good. Cassoulet was a big portion for $15, seasoned just right. Delicious! Steak and eggs w-/ plentiful and tasty. Only complaint was that the steak was a little tough, but that's the cut. It was cooked well and had great flavor. Great deal for the DIY mimosas, too! They also removed the stools from the prep area I had mentioned previously (was bread there during dinner--during brunch still a prep counter but the actual bar space just had fruit bowls). Can't wait to come back! ---------------------- We were excited to hear that this was opening because while it was being built out, there was word on the street Kettle Range was involved somehow. Turns out it was one of their butchers that went over to work here now--we were told that's their only tie to Kettle Range. Oh well! We were able to find parking on the street. Not sure if there's other parking available, but that does seem like an issue in this corridor. The interior is really cool; the smell when you go in is amazing. Woodfire, meat, food cooking...yum. there's a small meat/local goods shop up front, and when you enter the dining space it's very open to the kitchen and bar. Perhaps a little too open--the breads and crackers are sitting up on the bar in front of a few bar seats. If someone is sitting in those seats and sneezes, you're for sure ending up with some of their droplets on that carb display and then on your bread dish. When it came to the food, we had the bread starter (there was no one sitting at the bar in front of the breads and we were the first ones in there that night...otherwise I may have reconsidered the bread), kale caesar salad, beef carpaccio, and herb ash pasta. I'll just start out with saying that everything was a bit over seasoned except for the bread and the carpaccio. We love salt--frequently we add more salt to our food than we should. But the lardo that came with the bread was extremely salty, the salad was quite salty, and the pasta was very salty. Throughout the meal I found myself wanting a lemon, pickle, caper, anything to break through some of the seasoning. That being said, the bread was rustic and delicious, the kale salad and carpaccio was plentiful and fresh, and the pasta was quite delicious. We had a great bottle of wine for about $35, so that was very reasonably priced. It's a cool space, great smells, and good tastes. We felt like the seasoning needed to be toned down a bit or cut through with an acid/vinegar and that would make things much more on point. It's worth a try, especially if you're into salt. read more

I came here for the first time for a Company function on a Friday afternoon. We had a very lovely table on the patio outside. Our server was extremely attentive, and he made sure we were taken care of. They have a great cocktail menu for the afternoon happy hour; I had the Gold Medal rush which had a wonderful taste. They also have a great shelf of wines and liquors; they had a more than adequate selection of gins (personally believe that a wide selection of quality gins marks a good venue). Our party only had a rotating selection their small plate. Highlights included the really fresh Steelhead Trout crudo, the corn salad on smoked squash, and charred beef carpaccio. I recommend this venue for anyone coming for a classy start to an evening and would be happy to come back next time I'm in Milwaukee. read more

The food at Birch is bursting with flavor. We started with the green tomatoes. They were a perfect start to our meal and very shareable. The fresh vegetable starter was also very popular at many tables. I am not always a fan of vegetables, but I could not stop eating the beans and eggplant that accompanied the beef. Phenomenal dinner last night at Birch. My husband and I frequently went to Birch and Butcher pre-COVID. The restaurant re-opened as Birch, which is somehow even better than Birch and Butcher. This is one of the only restaurants in the area that came back stronger after closing for COVID. Everything was delicious but my two favorites were the ricotta focaccia small plate and the ricotta filled pasta with corn and serrano peppers. The rhubarb granita for dessert exceeded my expectations - the cold tartness of the granita was so well complimented by the lemon thyme yogurt. We'll be back!!! read more
