I have been to LifeLabs Canotek many times. My experience has never been great but yesterday was…read moretruly ghastly. I checked the website and saw they were open until 3, with a current waiting time of 20 minutes. I went right over and arrived at 1:20 to find a locked door. I could see people inside and after knocking 3 times someone finally came to tell me they had closed at 1 PM. My reference to the fact that they website said they were open and pleas for a quick blood test went unheeded. The lady pointed up to a paper note that had been taped to the door far too high for me to see in my wheelchair, as if somehow that was some sort of excuse. As I was climbing back into my are a man and woman arrived; he seemed much older and had very limited mobility, needed a cane and her elbow. I watched them go into the outer door, emerging a couple of minutes later clearly very upset. I engaged them in conversation and learned that they had a pre-booked appt. at 10:30 and still were not served. I would expect more of a convenience store; for a health care facility this is truly shameful. Of course it's a privately-owned facility. There is a happy ending: I checked for other labs in the area and discovered Dynacare at 595 Montreal Road. I was received with a smile (something I don't think I have ever seen at LifeLabs) and was invited into a bright windowed area (windows are something else you won't see at LifeLabs Canotek. I will NEVER go back there.

The facilities are quite nicely kept and clean, the staff are fine, not exceptional but not rude…read moreeither. I wasn't made to feel 'special' in any way, more like a number. When I asked about a portal for images I was told that I could purchase a CD for 20$, no portal was available. So if you are like me and want to see your images when you leave, be prepared to pay, what I think is an unreasonable amount for such an outdated media format in this online digital world, especially when I have never had to pay from other providers. I did purchase it because of my obsession, and I needed my imaging done, and had already waited 2 weeks for an appointment. I wasn't going to add more wait time to my imaging. Be prepared to pay for parking- although due to construction, I didn't have to pay today. If you are hoping for a quiet experience this is not your place. It's very loud (echoes a lot) and you can actually hear people talking in their rooms as well the staff can be heard laughing and chatting about their plans for after work and their favourite places to shop. They don't seem too concerned with everybody hearing each other's information, either. If you are the far end of the hall for your appointment, it's not as loud. I arrived 15 minutes early, I was called 10 minutes after my scheduled time. My ultrasound technician was very nice and made me feel very comfortable. I then had to wait for my CD of images. After waiting for 25 minutes- I went up and asked if they had an ETA on that CD. I was told "Oh sorry, I was on my lunch and didn't know". The whole time I was there, this same person was helping people the whole time, so I'm not fully sure I buy that excuse. She was polite and got up and worked on the CD - which took about 7 more minutes. In all, I spent an hour and 17 minutes for a 10 minute ultrasound. Granted, had I not wanted the CD I would have been out much faster. When I left the building I realized as I was walking to my car that I had dropped the CD out of my hand and looked back and saw it a few feet away, so I quickly grabbed it. I noticed however, that it had my full name, birthday and Health card number hand written on the CD. I found that to be surprising- with the way our province worries about health card fraud. Not to mention identity theft. I think they should really reconsider that policy. So if you get a CD- perhaps ask them prior, to not write your personal info all over it. I had another issue, that at this time, I will reserve judgment on, because I am not sure who messed up- them or my Dr. So I'll give them the benefit of the doubt, until I have more details. All and all, it was an 'Meh' experience- would I go back voluntarily? No.

Only people who could transfer on their own from their wheelchair was acceptable and that the room wasn't even big enough for her chair (btw it measures 24" across - the smallest of widths in a chair for an adult). Talk about alienating someone and especially from receiving medical tests that are required to rule out a serious issue. Totally not acceptable.
