I love a good bookstore and this place was so cute and cozy. They have a good selection of books: new and used. They also have a children's section which I thought was nice, pretty big section too. I saw a few books that were interesting but I opted to go with a mystery book. They had about 4 books wrapped and a little description on the front for only $8! Binnacle Books was one of my bookmarked (lol) spots to visit on Yelp after I got accepted to attend an Elite Event this weekend at neighboring Isamu Restaurant. While we didn't spend a lot of time here, I was impressed with the wide selection of new and used books and the charming and quaint design of this little bookstore that's set inside of what appears to be an old apartment. They have a ton of books, and some of them looked to be quite old and possibly rare. The coolest part of Binnacle is the "Date With A Book" box, where you can select a mystery book for $8 that has only a short description of the basic plot on the brown paper bag wrapper. It's a cool way to check out a new book you may have never thought to read on your own! I wish there was more seating inside the store, but it's very small, so that's understandable. If I could have sat and perused some of the books I was thinking of buying, I probably would never have left! Binnacle lets people bring in their own used books to sell, and I probably will take them up on that next time I am in Beacon! read more

I live in Beacon and have visited this bookstore numerous times. I love books, love bookstores, and really dislike this one. I want to like it and have given it many chances, including during the week and on the weekend, but I have only once had an ok experience here, when one of the owners' moms was working. Every time I go in here, I feel like the proprietors would really rather I'd not come in. I find a them a combination of patronizing, disinterested, and lacking breadth of knowledge. The book selection feels like someone's leftover college books combined with a few expensive new titles from an online progressive "must-read" list. I like to browse and they have never once been able to help me find a book that fits my tastes. Given that the pleasure of finding a new book that fits is one of the main reasons to shop in person, I have finally given up on this store. These days, I drive to 10 minutes to Split Rock Books in Cold Spring, when I experience the complete opposite of Binnacle Books--good customer service, excellent selection, and knowledgeable staff. The worst "customer service" we've ever witnessed. The cashier was unspeakably rude today. Take a look at who you're hiring and ask yourself if they're treating your customers as if they HATE THEM. We will never spend another dollar in Beacon, New York and certainly not at this bookstore. Trying to support local is not worth it when you get treated the way we did at this bookstore today. I love visiting this gem on Main Street. They have an incredible selection of new and classic fiction. They also have a large kids section. I especially enjoyed the thriller and sci fi sections. The store is intimate and well organized with used and new books. The staff is friendly but not pushy. They're always available for recommendations. Highly recommend stopping in if you're ever walking by. read more

This place is great. Their selection is fantastic and very within my tastes. Every shelf had something intriguing to me and a title that I already knew and loved. Whenever we go to Beacon, this is always on our agenda of places to stop (at least mine). I always leave with a bag of books to add to my collection. For a small shop they have a very varied collection of used and new books. If they don't have it, they will try to find it for you. Prices are very fair, too. There is another used book store up the street attached to the library, but it's not as well stocked or well organized as Binnacle Books. Binnacle also has a box of "date with a book" (or something to that effect) by their checkout. The books are wrapped in plain brown paper with a brief line about the story and what the genre is. It's a neat way to discover an author or series for a dollar or two. It is absolutely worth taking a moment to stop in here, buy a few books, then head up the street for a coffee and donut while you browse your newest home library additions. This is a little wonder of a bookshop, truly. read more

This place is a little oasis of carefully curated new, used, signed, and small press books. I was really happy to make it in here on my trip to Beacon, and really appreciated the super chill music that was playing. They have a great new and used poetry selection, I found a book I'd been looking for for awhile. Also there are cool and useful face out themed selection of title in the shelves. The space is laid out really well. If you're a reader, make this part of your Beacon trip. read more

This is a newer addition to the Beacon community, but it's absolutely awesome! The owners are a medley of writers, filmmakers, and musicians, so they actually pick and choose their inventory with care. They have an amazing selection of good quality used books for fair prices and unlike other "used bookstores", they don't just accept any random mediocre books or books in bad shape that they happen to come across. You can absolutely tell that they are selective about their inventory because their entire selection, even the used and vintage books, are in really good shape and you can find legit books here. I've been to other bookstores with used books in inventory and so many of the titles are obscure and undesirable. But here, you can count on actually finding things you have been looking for in good condition! Plus, they always carry collectible books, art anthology books, and a hefty section of "new" books also! read more

This is a great used book store! They had an awesome selection, divided into interesting categories with helpful staff picks. Staff was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. They accept donations of used books for both cash and store credit. I will definitely be returning in the future! read more
