My wife and I drove from South Carolina to visit Bin Depot in Winston-Salem, and what should have been an enjoyable shopping trip turned into an outright unacceptable and deeply humiliating experience.
We were genuinely enjoying ourselves and had already selected several items we intended to purchase. Without warning, an employee abruptly singled me out and treated me as though I were stealing. As I placed my phone into my pocket, she immediately confronted me and demanded to know what I had just put away. When I calmly explained it was my phone, she responded with a drawn-out, dismissive "hmmmmmm," clearly indicating she did not believe me.
Rather than handling the situation professionally--such as reviewing the bank of security cameras plainly visible near the register, which would have taken only moments--she chose to escalate the situation. She came out from behind the counter, approached me directly, and scrutinized the outline of my pocket while continuing to question me and imply wrongdoing.
At that point, I had had enough of being treated like a criminal. To put an end to the harassment, I emptied every pocket I had and turned them completely inside out in front of her. As expected, there was nothing--no merchandise, no glasses, nothing from the store whatsoever--just my personal belongings.
Even after being proven completely wrong, there was not a single apology. No acknowledgment. No attempt to correct her behavior. Nothing.
Earlier in the visit, the same employee had already shouted across the store at my wife for opening a package--despite the fact that it was already open when she picked it up. Even after my wife calmly explained this, there was again no apology.
This was not just poor customer service--it was unprofessional, accusatory, and entirely inappropriate. Customers should not be publicly singled out, interrogated, and treated with suspicion without cause--especially when there are obvious, less confrontational ways to verify concerns.
We left without making a purchase, and we will not be returning. I strongly advise others to reconsider shopping here unless they are comfortable being treated with unwarranted suspicion instead of basic respect. read more
