Food was either undercooked or over cooked. A lot of expensive items to choose but just not at all what was expected. Looks like it came out the microwave. As far as service not that great either....got my food and felt like I was being waited on to leave. No server came to check if the food was okay or to refill my water. As a Latino I'm extremely disappointed. All these good reviews makes me think it was friends and family to help promote the business. The water was good though. read more

With few authentic Colombian options in Hampton Roads I was thrilled to try Bilu's lunch menu for the first time today and boy did it not disappoint. This is my second visit with the first being breakfast. The location off Newtown Rd may have you pass it by even with GPS. Look for the new construction of apartments and you will be in the vicinity. Parking due to construction is on the side, no longer in front. There is ample parking and it was clear of debris as well as the walks in front of the business. The dining room is spacious. It's broken down in three areas, but is really open. A bakery, seating area, dining room with TV and a bar in the rear. Seating is by table and chairs. The Columbian motif is felt with various knickknacks and a Columbian flag that hangs overhead. My waitress Brianna was attentive and placed my menu down and got my drink order of an in house papaya made with milk, it's a native drink and was yum! The menu is gigantic! Lots of authentic options including their rotisserie chicken which they are known for. In the end I took my waitresses suggestion and so happy I did. Bandeja Paisa Con / Columbian platter / grilled top round steak, pork cracklings, Columbian sausage, rice, beans, sweet fried plantains, corn patty, egg & avocado. This is their signature dish and incredible! My first visit was the Bilu's Breakfast / mixed rice & beans w/ scrambled eggs, corn cake & Colombian sausage. Paired w/ a Mora Blackberry smoothie and a house Colombian coffee. Side of guava & caramel/ cheese pastry from their bakery. OMG, I loved it. I have not tasted food like this since residing in Miami. The restaurant is in its 5th year of operation. Bilu's Columbian bakery inside the restaurant serves traditional favorites such as Pastelitos & empanadas. The bakery is celebrating their 7th year. I also witnessed a military group of over 35. My assumption is there was a reservation and it got out of hand with add on's that the restaurant was not exactly prepared for. I saw attention to drinks immediately. By the time I was preparing to leave food was rolling out, but unfortunately was quickly being returned due to errors. Also guest kept coming in and pulling more tables together. My assumption is that everything was straightened out, but it was chaotic and in my opinion not necessary the businesses fault with an unpredicted group that size. Before departing I hit up the restroom which is in the very rear by the kitchen and piano. Yep, the have a piano for entertainment I guess. The facilities were clean with proper supplies. Executive Chef and owner Vanessa, originally from Columbia has been cooking up yummy native dishes for over 40 years. I loved both of my visits and placing them at a 4.5, rounding down. read more

Super friendly staff and very authentic Colombian food. I had the frijolada which was very satisfying and good for the price. Would recommend for a weekday lunch! read more

I really do hate to have to drop one star, but this place was that bad. We arrived on a Sunday afternoon, there were a handful of people inside. Not that busy at all. The service was incredibly slow. Our appetizer which was empanadas was pretty good, but was just tossed on the table without side plates. The second part of the appetizer was never brought to us, but was on the check at the end. We both ordered Bilus Bandeja and neither of us were impressed. The pork was over cooked and the chicken was overwhelmingly seasoned with salt. The chicharrones were like rocks. Overall, it seemed like the food had been hanging around for a while. I will not be returning to this establishment. read more

Sometimes I get a craving for the soul food of other cultures. Our Colombian cousins at Bilu's always come through. Since I've been keeping my distance, I ordered a bandeja via DoorDash/UberEats (not sure which). It's a combo of different meats (chicharron, sausage, etc), rice, beans, a slice of avocado, a fried egg and one or two things I can't remember. Perfectly seasoned! The portion sizes are enough for the average person to enjoy two healthy helpings. I also ordered flan (not pictured), which wasn't bad yet wasn't amazing. Was slightly disappointed, but the bandeja made up for that. read more

A friend of mine born and raised in Columbia wanted me to try traditional Columbian food, so he took me here because he believed they are as authentic as back home. I loved every bite, and even went to try a shake to complete the meal. I naturally love beef and onions, and they cooked it so well - the onions were fragrant but not overwhelming the rest of the entree. I really enjoy that banana and corn patties are a normal side for the dishes. The corn patty was a nice crunch and the banana added some sweetness. The Columbian sausage was the way I like sausage; when you bite and break the casing, all the flavor rushes out at ya. Definitely order empanadas as an appetizer because it's just a great way to prepare for what's to come. The empanadas are packed with meat and the outer pastry is so soft that the texture alone is pleasant. The menu offer beef, chicken, seafood, and pork to fulfill whatever craving you're feeling. If you're bringing your little ones, they do have a kids menu as well. I was very satisfied with the selection, the flavors, the cooking, and the staff. read more

My wife and I had a craving for Colombian food so we looked on Google. To our surprise we found there are two Colombian places near our home. We chose Bill's and we were blown away at this food. Flavorful and delicious plus generous portion sizes make this place a great choice. We have found our go to place for South American food in Virginia Beach!! Highly recommended food plus there is a Colombian bakery next door also run by Bilu's. read more

We ordered the bandeja paisa with the steak, I was so confused on how small the steak and chicharrón was. Also the sausage wasn't the whole piece it was cut into a smaller piece. I am a colombian from NY, and currently live in Florida and have never had such small portion in the steak and chicharrón ever in any of the Colombian restaurants I have been too. The service was a little slow. Was upset, not what we expected. read more

The empanadas were rock hard and the bandeja Paisa was underwhelming. The avocado was not ready to serve and the chicharrón was over fried. And the portions were not enough. Over priced.. and the waiter never checked on our table until we asked for the check. We waited for refill on our beverages but she never came back. I didn't rate it one star because the bakery was actually good. I loved el pan con queso. But that's the only thing going for them. read more

We went a few weeks ago and the food was so-so, but the service was so incredibly slow it really ruined the meal. We had to pretty much beg for our check, and refills on drinks. We decided to give them a second chance tonight so we went back. There were three of us. After waiting for 15 minutes with our menus and never having anyone check on us, we also realized that not a single table around us had food. There were three waitstaff and there did not appear to be sections, they were just taking whatever table came in. Looks like a lot of tables got lost in the shuffle. We walked out and I doubt we will be back. read more

The food was really good I always enjoy going. Wonderful customer service and amazing staff

Bilu's is a really great, authentic Colombian restaurant and bakery. We've been here many times, and never had a meal that wasn't excellent. Let me start by addressing the other reviews about the service. I've always found them friendly and welcoming. It is true that many employees speak limited English, and if you are not understanding about that it might cause conflict with a less open-minded customer. To me, it just adds the authenticity. Now for the food. We started with empanadas and chicerrones, both are classic and well-prepared. The menu is full of numerous choices among Colombian cuisine. The star of the menu in my opinion is the red snapper im coconut salsa. It is a large, whole red snapper grilled, and topped with a delicious sauce of coconut milk, tomatoes, and onions. They always get excited when you order this, as its a beautiful and delicious dish, and shows off their skills. It is not easy to perfectly grill a whole fish, cooking through, without drying it out. In my opinion, one of the top fish dishes available in Hampton Roads. The menu also offers a lot of steak options. I had the beef rose meat (it's thin meat from the breastbone, that's ususally used in. "steak" tacos), served with the Columbian "creole" sauce of tomatoes, scallions, and garlic. Tender and delicious! There are also some intereting dishes that do not seem South American in nature, but are authentic to the interesting hybrid of cultures that is Colombian. For example, my wife ordered the Pollo Maryland. It was grilled chicken breast, topped with honey, sliced apricots, and bacon. I've certainly never seen it on a Baltimore menu! Also delicious! All meals come with a salad, rice and plantains. You also don't want to skip desert here. They have their own little bakery that cranks out delicious treats. The flans' rice pudding, tres leches cake, and more are all delicious. Bilu's is located on Newtown road' near the intersection of Baker Road. It formerly was on the end of decrepit and sketchy shopping center. Thankfully the shopping center has been torn down and the site was re-developed into some nice' new apartments. The retaurant was incorporated into the re-develoment' in their same space. It is very attractive from the outside now. It has always been nice inside' decorated with a variety of Colombian artwork. This is a unique place that you must try! read more

I have been eyeing this place for a while and since they opened after that area had finished renovation. I was expecting a lot since reading other reviews. As we walked in we were greeted and was told to seat wherever we liked. Honestly I'm just going to be short because I don't want this to be a runt but I thought the waiter we had was rude and our food wait was crazy long. We received our orders the same time as someone who arrived there 30 mins after we had. I felt isolated by the fact that the waiter kept assuming we spoke Spanish and we told him the first time that we didn't. After that he never checked on us. Food presentation was great and flavor was good. But the food was not worth the service. read more

Oh yeaa and their staff is always nice and pleasant as well. read more

Man, do I LOVE Colombian food! I actually forgot how much until I had it again, here! I suppose I could enjoy it more frequently, but maybe it's good that I don't indulge in the "Bandeja Paisa" too much. LOCATION. Bilu's is located on Newtown Road in VB, very easy to find. There is parking in the front and to the side of the place. INSIDE. We came on a Friday night and the place was busier than I imagined it would be. But then I shouldn't have been surprised. This place has everything - juice, a good selection of alcoholic beverages, a bakery, and of course, great food! The place is pretty big and seats many people. Lighting is really good inside as well. It's not overly decorated, but there are enough decorations to keep it cheery. They seemed to have enough staff to help keep service flowing smoothly, as a couple of different people waited on/helped us. Everyone was nice! FOOD AND DRINKS. Everything was delicious!! Two of us ordered alcoholic beverages - one Mango & one Strawberry; I forget what they're called, they are similar to the slushy margaritas & they were STRONG! I got a buzz and can't even imagine how much stronger it would have been if I wasn't eating. Or if I drank two! Ooooh Lawd!! Anyway, onto the food - one ordered the Half Rotisserie Chicken meal (comes with 2 sides,) two of us ordered the Bandeja Paisa, which I would say is the most popular of Colombian dishes - it comes with rice, beans, avocado, fried egg, sweet plantain, a little corn patty, steak, chicharron, and sausage! (I actually ordered the "Bandejita Paisa," which was everything I mentioned minus the steak.) One ordered the BIG daddy version of this, which had even MORE stuff!! I forget what it's called, but I'm sure it was delicious also, as was everything else. The meat was tender, the chicharron fried to perfection, and the beans, so good! A bite that consists of rice, a few beans, a piece of avocado, some egg, & and a piece of meat - literally heaven in the mouth! I am a fan and would definitely return. Next time, maybe I'll try some goodies from the bakery. The pastries looked so fresh. Yay for Colombian food; Bilu's gets 4.5 stars from me! Gimme all the meat! read more

A small group of us had dinner Friday evening. Ya know, I really can just echo what she said - https://www.yelp.com/biz/bilus-virginia-beach?hrid=kfI84Xow79fRKbizRaCgFg&utm_campaign=www_review_share_popup&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_source=(direct). Come hungry and come ready to eat because they don't hold back on the servings. If you're feeling adventurous, I recommend the Bilu's tray. It's an assortment of meat (beef, pork, chicken, chicharron, and chorizo) served with rice, beans, egg, and avocado. A few days later I still had leftovers. The beef, pork, and chicharron were the highlights of the meal... juicy and tender bites all around. I asked for my egg sunny side up. It came nothing close to it but that didn't really bother me because there was so much other things to eat on the plate. Everyone else in the group seemed to enjoy their food. I did indulge in one of their mango alcoholic drinks. They pretty much served it with enough mango to give it color but the alcohol content was quite high. No complaints. I didn't mind the happy feeling it gave me. From my experiences, this place is bigger than most Colombian restaurants I've been to. It's quite spacious and can easily accommodate a party of 15+ as well as seat another 20-25 folks. It's bright inside. The decor isn't anything too fancy. Just know that you're coming for good food... and lots of it. They do have a bakery but we were all too full from dinner to try any sweets. read more

So you wanted a big pile of tasty meat? Look no further than the first entre on the list at Bilu's, an unapologetically grand Colombian experience! I felt like I could've benefited from speaking Spanish to get the full effect. I ordered this amazing sampler (sorry I can't recall the name, I would personally call it, "The Kitchen Sink") that had steak, chicken, chorizo, onions, avocado, plantains, a plain rice cake of some sort, rice and beans! Seriously, it's like everything they make on one plate (you can see it in the picture). This was a portion size fit for the nutty professor; I left with plenty for the next day. Let's break it down. I love love loved the Chicken, it was the rockstar here. The steak was fair, but I was expecting a little more punch. Chorizo and plantains were great. I don't feel the little white cake added anything. Rice and beans were spot on. Ultimately, this was a culinary journey that I enjoyed taking. I wrapped up with their rice pudding that was more "liquidy" than many might be used to. That said, I really liked it. It was served chilly cold and I found myself taking sips from the glass! My server was pleasant, and attentive. There are TV's throughout and they clearly love their Football. The art was simple, but again felt authentic. It's definitely worth a visit. Try the chicken! read more

They open at 9am not 8!!! I was in town and had heard great things back home (Richmond) about this restaurant. As my friends and I walked in we were greeted by a nice lady (who later I found out was the owner). We were told to seat wherever we liked (we were the first ones there). We were asked what we wanted to drink by a very friendly young lady. They have so many choices of natural juices, I love that! I got the passion fruit which was delicious. To eat I got some cheese empanadas and beef empanadas. The cheese ones were my favorite, they didn't have many ready so I couldn't order more to take home, I settled for the beef ones! I also got the milus breakfast, with chicharrón. I really enjoyed that breakfast. If I'm in town I'll be in here! Oh I also took home 6 guava cheese bread!! TRY THE BREAD!! As we left, the nice older lady (owner) said goodbye and thanked us with an big smile. read more
