Bilu's Colombian Restaurant & Rotisserie Chicken is located off Newtown RD in Virginia Beach. I attempted to visit a few weeks ago for dinner to try their Rotisserie chicken but unfortunately they were sold out so I recently returned again on a Friday during lunch for another attempt. When I entered I was greeted right away and was given a menu and I let them know I would like to place an order to go.  Service was great and the wait staff was very friendly and took my order immediately.  The dining room was very spacious with plenty of tables and they had bar seating available. While I waited for my food I decided to walk over to the bakery that was attached to the restaurant. The bakery sells a bunch of different Colombian/Spanish baked goods, snacks and frozen items. They also had a section setup similar to a gift shop that had purses, hats, clothing and souvenirs that you would mostly find if you were in Columbia which I found to be a nice and unique addition.  I ordered the half rotisserie chicken with coconut rice, fried cassava, and sugar cane juice with lime To-go. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed with the quality of my meal. My chicken lacked flavor and tasted as though it had been reheated rather than freshly prepared. The wing was so dry and dehydrated that it was inedible; only the leg and thigh were moist. Additionally, the coconut rice was significantly undercooked and excessively sweet, to the point that I could not eat it. The fried cassava was served in very large pieces that remained undercooked. The Sugar cane juice was a dark brown color and had a sour taste, suggesting it was not fresh.  Fresh sugarcane juice should be a greenish- yellow color and only turns brown after it oxidizes which changes the quality and is not what I expected.  I have heard great things about this restaurant and hope my experience is not the norm. While I am interested in other menu items, I am currently hesitant about when I might return. read more

Except for slightly slow service to take your order, there's nothing to fuss about this place. Lively ambiance, delicious food. There's even some entrepreneurship going on with a gentleman coming over to ask if you want to buy a trinket, instead of flowers I suppose. I couldn't finish the food definitely enough for a dinner and lunch! I asked what they have for dessert: tres leches, tiramisu, flan. I pass on dessert this time although they sound good! A Little Piece of Colombia in VA Beach If you're Colombian (or just love real, soulful food), Bilu's Colombian Restaurant in VA Beach is an absolute must. From the moment we walked in, it felt like home--warm, welcoming, and full of corazón. Shoutout to Camila, our server, because baby... she went above and beyond. Attentive, kind, knowledgeable, and genuinely happy to make sure we had the best experience. That kind of service hits different. Now let's talk food, because whew ‍ We started with empanadas de pollo--crispy, flavorful, and perfect. My son ordered the pargo marinado with a jugo de lulo en leche (chef's kiss), and I had the carne en salsa criolla with a jugo de guanábana en leche that tasted exactly like back home. No shortcuts. No watered-down flavors. Just real Colombian goodness. To finish strong, we had a cafesito en leche with pandebono, and honestly... I could've cried. That's how authentic it was. As if that wasn't enough, we stopped by La Tiendita inside the restaurant and grabbed our favorites: Arequipe Alpina (porque obvio) and Manzana Postobón--our forever favorite soda. My son even picked up a Colombian national team jersey, which made the experience even more special. The food here is just fantastic! Consistently high-quality great service and a real family feel ambience is what makes this place so great! We ordered the empanadas which are always one of my favorite things. I like the meat ones and all the sauces that go with them. We also each ordered the Caldo the res (beef broth soup) it comes with delicious meat, potatoes, and yucca in a delicious broth and a side of rice we ordered an extra side salad that we split and that was a perfect meal for the both of us. I love having the soft drink postobon manzana and my husband had the Colombiana. These are wonderful drinks and so delicious. You will love this restaurant. It's family friendly and spacious. Me and my CoWorkers came here for lunch. I had the creole shrimp. A bunch t too much cilantro for my taste it overpowered the whole bowl. Visiting Virginia Beach and wanted to take my nephews out for an awesome ethnic food lunch. Found Bilu's on Yelp and knew that it was worth a shot. Walked in to a fairly large restaurant, there is also a bakery side that also looked nice. We were greeted by a very friendly staff. They spoke far more English than I speak Spanish. We were given a nice table and some time to check out the ample menu. We started off with fruit drinks, blackberry, guava, and tamarind were all cold and refreshing. For an appetizer, we went with the Arepas con todo. Basically the arepa with a tasty mix of "everything", that was served with rice. For entrees we had their snapper in a coconut salsa and goat stew. The goat was a tender and flavorful dish. The snapper is an absolute show stopper! Sizable whole snapper, a medley of other seafood including scallops and shrimp, swimming in a delectable sauce. We absolutely loved it! We also received yellow rice, coconut rice, and red beans. I loved the sweet element of the coconut rice. After the quality of the main dishes, we knew that we wanted dessert. We selected tres leches, cheesecake, and a chocolate cake. The tres leches cake was divine, some of the best I've had. The cheesecake was fantastic, a different type of texture that was awesome! The chocolate cake was no slouch either. A perfect cup of espresso was a great complement to the dessert. We had a great experience at Bilu's! read more

The paella was fantastic with a mix of all types of meats and seafoods, and plenty of flavor too. So it's been about a couple of years since I was last here! ( will disclose I am Colombian) I was only passing by and picked up some beef empanadas, a mango juice made with milk and now they have a bakery section next to the restaurant with Colombian treats and souvenirs! The whole place has been renovated and looks really nice. I ordered 5 bunelos to go as well from the bakery. The mango juice was good, the empanadas were fresh and fried to perfection! They were good! My only critique is, work on the Aji! I'm sorry but that is not aji, I felt like it was a Mexican salsa! The bunelos were ok, you need to add more cheese so the bunelo taste like a bunelo! It tasted like a bread! That's not what we want! Everyone was friendly and the place was clean. I ordered the patacon and arroz con pollo and the little fried potatoes. The patacon came with shredded beef, white rice and fried plantain and sweet plantains. The whole dish tasted great, I felt like they could have been more generous with the beef portion but it was really good. The rice and chicken was seasoned good also. The little potatoe balls were bland though, maybe they could serve these with a dipping sauce ? I know they were deep fried so maybe they did seasoned them but it didnt stick. read more

The food here is amazing! Me, my uncle, and my brother were looking for a place to eat and stumbled upon Bilu's. When we arrived the staff greeted us and asked what we wanted to drink. The waitress recommended the juices so we got guava, blackberry and tamarind. I had the guava and it was very good, I like the sweet taste and the fruity flavor. The building gives off good vibes with the Colombian flags hanging from the walls and the Spanish music playing. Although I don't know Spanish too well the waitress knew enough English to understand our order. Once we looked at the menu we instantly knew we wanted the Red Snapper. We also got goat, yellow rice, coconut rice and arepas. The goat had a pleasant flavor but a little chewy as expected, the yellow and coconut rices were amazing. And the arepas were also very good. The Red Snapped was by far the star of the show, the fish was delicious and the sauce was very flavorful. Once the fish was done we noticed the other seafood in the bowl. They didn't last long either, I highly recommend the Red Snapper. For dessert we went to the bakery section and picked out 3 items and an espresso. We got the cheesecake which was a unique flavor but it was my overall favorite. My second favorite was the tres leches, it was one of the best tres leches I've ever had. Lastly, the chocolate cake was a close competition with the tree leches, it was very rich and decadent and overall a very good cake Bilu's was definitely worth the drive! read more

My husband and I had been craving good, authentic Latino cooking for some time, and after a Colombian friend suggested Bilus, we were impressed to find this hidden gem in Hampton Roads! Stepping into the restaurant it was clear this was the real deal - the casual dining area was full of families (presumably regular customers) enjoying a good meal. The adjoining Bilu's bakery was full of authentic snacks, beverages, and pastries, as well. My husband ordered the Arroz con pollo, which was exceptionally flavorful and generously portioned. As an added treat, it came with two tostones (fried plantains). I got the quarter chicken and white rice, and though simple, nothing compares to this chicken. Juicy, smoky, and flavorful - I only wish I got the half chicken! A small side of garlic oil made for the perfect condiment. Prices were exceptionally fair given the amount of food. I have to be honest and review it for the experience we had and not what we may have. I was very excited to try this place and we felt the food on Yelp looked really good. It is located on Newtown road within the new shopping center. It has a grocery store attached to it that has some really authentic options. The hours on Yelp are wrong, so please call before you go. We were under the impression they close at 10 pm but they close at 8. So when we arrived inside one hostess told us we could sit anywhere but then another one said they are closing so we could only order to go. Ok no problem but it was the constant harassment and pressure to order that made it uneventful. We finally ordered our food and about 10 minutes pass and he tells us they do not have anymore chicken. So instead of telling us sooner and we could've left they drug it out. Our kids were hungry so we wanted to keep their order and we got some empanadas. I'll help you out here, the beef has no taste whatsoever. I didn't like way they were Fried. Also the price of them are ridiculous. The kids didn't really enjoy their meals either. It is not cost friendly at all like other Latin spots. The tres leche cake was top tier. That is a must order if you go. I expect to return to be able to try other things on the menu but first impression, I was not impressed at all. read more

This place is super cute and family friendly. Don't be intimidated if you don't know how to speak Spanish, because they also have English speaking people there to help you. When I went there with a friend, our server was very nice and made some good recommendations. I definitely recommend their empanadas, and something cool is that the ketchup and mustard bottles are actually sauces to go with them. The empanadas are pretty much why I wanted to go here to begin with, and I can happily say I will come back just for those. My favorite Colombian joint in the area and one of my favorites ever! My "usual" is a 1/4 chicken with rice and beef empanadas. Love that their beef empanadas are corn and not puff pastries (their specialty empanadas are the puff pastries though). Every order comes with an assortment of sauces from salsas to a garlic sauce and my favorite one switches up every time. I've heard from others that their service can be slow or not the friendliest but of the many times I've been here, this has NOT been my experience. They only have one menu, however feature lunch specials, today was vegetable soup with a salad and steak. We opted for empanadas, arapas, and their meat filled platter (can't remember the name). The empanadas are 1.80 each and come with chicken, beef, Hawaiian, and shrimp . We got the beef and chicken. These came out so crispy and amazing... flavors just pop! The arapas we chose were chorizo and Colombian salami. Holy yummy meat! The meat platter was huge, more than enough for 2 people. Steak, pork chop, chorizo, 1/4 rotisserie chicken, chicharonnes, avocado, egg, and plantains. All of this can just jump off the plate into my mouth. Each piece was so full of flavor!
