We live in Colbert but only recently tried the hot dogs. They are truly fantastic! We have gone by several times since and will go again. Who doesn't love a great hot dog? These are GREAT dogs! I can't believe I am moving from Athens in a couple of weeks and just found out about this place. The hot dogs with chili, cheese, slaw, with onions mustard and ketchup knock the socks off the Varsity. Best dog I have eaten in a long time. The place is unique in that it is in an old building with a variety of tables and a small counter. The waitresses seem to know everyone and their order as they came in the door. They even know that on this day they get this sandwich rather than their normal order. I hope to get back one more time before I leave Athens. Remember to bring cash. read more

The menu is limited and it is cash only BUT the Chili Dogs are FANTASTIC! Service is is great, the Precious Ladies that work there are the best. The ambiance is that of a old hotdog stand. The cash register is 200 years old but it still works. read more

I'm back home visiting my family and I had to come here for a hotdog. This is what I grew up on and I wanted my kids to experience it too. My dad loves the slaw dogs here. I don't eat hot dogs but like the taste of their chicken salad. I just wish they gave you more than a smear of chicken salad on the two very flat pieces of toast. I've had chicken salad sandwiches at other places and the portion here is way smaller. I'd like a little chicken salad with my bread next time. read more

This is as down home as you can get! Best hotdogs around, grilled cheese and other great sandwiches. When I worked across the street - I frequented this eatery every week. Do yourself a favor. Order corned beef sandwiches with cheese and mayo. Order many of them. Then order at least 4-5 hot dogs with ketchup, mustard, and onions. You will be happy. Endlessly happy. This place is a hidden gem. Unassuming from the outside, rugged and no-BS on the inside. They make great food, fast, and the prices are extremely favorable. I had heard what a great place this was for hot dogs, but I had my doubts. After all, it is out in the hinterlands of Athens. I admit, I am something of a hot dog snob. In my opinion, hot dogs should be pork in natural casing and grilled only. Sahlen's are my preference. I kept my expectations low. After all, the pinnacle of hotdoggery in Georgia for most folks is the Varsity, which I think is garbage. Barker's in Atlanta is the best in the state. So in order to hedge my bets, I ordered a hot dog and a corned beef sandwich. The hot dog was probably recently removed from the Oscar Meyer packaging that morning and had been drowning in what I hope was water for some unspecified period. It was served in a roll that looked like someone had recently found it under a couch cushion. It was, in the end, edible though barely. That's the best I can say. Can't say as much for the "corned beef". I don't know what passes for corned beef in Georgia, but I have never seen anything like it before. It had the consistency of Alpo though the flavor was a little off. Perhaps it was Ken-L-Ration. This glop was then sparingly, and thankfully so, spread between two slices of toasted Wonder bread. Never in my life have I ever had corned beef served on anything but rye. And I suppose I still haven't. Perhaps it might have been a corned beef *hash* sandwich though even that unsavory description would be too generous. The folks seem nice enough and, by all accounts, seem to do a thriving business with the locals. I doubt this review will change that. I wish them well. They have a lovely cash register from 1910 and cool pictures of perhaps every deer shot and trout caught in the past few decades around the area. On the far wall, they have framed two invoices for cases of cigars and cigarettes from 1958 with quaint prices. Beneath the register is a curio collection of antique Coke and Pepsi bottles to round off the curious decor. This place is to food what the Clermont Lounge in Atlanta is to strip clubs though not as funny and you can't get blind drunk with a 65 year old stripper. You gotta go just for the experience if nothing else. Two stars for that. None for the food. read more
