Excellent food in spite of the time difference. The server had an accent. Tasty tea.

It really does shine out from a lot of other places as the food is presented with so much flair and creativity, There's a really varied and ambitious menu on offer and all of it looks like it works. I had the spiced fillets of John Dory last time I ate there and they were absolutely exceptional. There's a really nice light lunch menu on offer too if you just fancy something easy. Great wine list to and the staff are always happy to pair a decent wine with your dish.

A recent lunch there from the set menu revealed a sure hand in the kitchen, though front of house was a bit scatty. I had pan fried hake, with Indian spiced potatoes, spinach, and cockles. The superb creamy sauce had just a hint of curry flavour, and the whole thing worked wonderfully. My partner had roast neck fillet of lamb, with saute potatoes, pancetta, and Calvero Nero. This was a bit salty, and the lamb a bit chewy (although flavour was good). Puds were better still. I had cinnamon macaroon, maple roasted banana, pistachios, and chocolate mousse. It was a sort of deconstructed banoffee pie, and a marvel especially the creamy mousse. My other half had the vanilla poached Cox apple, lavender marshmallow, and blackberries. The marshmallow was stupendously tasty and soft. The set menu was 2 courses for £17.95, three for £21.95. A glass of house wine was an extra three quid. So, great tastes, imagination, and good value. Wait for an exhibition at the gallery that catches your fancy, and go.

Enter through the main hotel door and, to your left, you're greeted by the welcoming sight of a roaring log fire (in winter!) alongside inviting squashy sofas in modern neutral tones. Walk past, or through, the bar and you're in the spacious, airily stylish restaurant. I chose to sit in the strikingly attractive, subtly-lit conservatory, looking onto the quiet side street. The Lloyd Loom (style) seating was both chic and comfortable. I opted for the evening two-course table d'hote menu, at £10. My starter of fresh grilled sardine was inventively filled with ricotta and accompanied by green salad; it was light, tasty and the perfect size for an appetiser. I wasn't sure about my main of pan-fried mackerel when I ordered it but it proved to be deeply-delicious, packed with flavour, as fresh as could be, complemented with crushed new potatoes, black olive, fresh tomato concassé and salad leaves. The busy staff provided excellent, efficient service and remained smiling and attentive throughout.

The atmosphere of the restaurant is lovely: an elegant balance of contemporary and classic with some particularly lovely wallpapers! I chose from the early '£10 for two courses' menu, and was impressed by the quality of food provided for that price. Pan-fried mackerel was delicious, with fresh, beautifully-cooked fish and tasty, imaginative accompaniments. Treacle tart was warm, with crisp pastry, a soft filling which wasn't too sickly, and a scoop of organic ice cream. There is a selection of wines available by the glass, as well as by the bottle (although I stuck to water). Coffee was also good, and service was friendly and efficient.
