Just had the worst experience at Bill's Hardware. Can't say I've had great ones in the past because for the most part all they do is point to the general area of the part you want and then you have to go search it out. Certainly not like Ayres, McLean or Cherrydale Hardware where the staff is attentive and takes you to the item. When I arrived the employee was at the front of the store where they typically sit not moving. I asked him to show me where the tubing section was. Remarkably he walked me over there. Once we got there, though, everything went downhill. I asked a question, didn't understand his answer, and asked him again. He then proceeded to yell at me and storm off. As I left the store he was ripping a box apart in a frenzy, obviously irate. I suggested he work on his customer relation skills. He scowled back. This will be the last time I go to Bill's. In fact, I went directly to Cherrydale Hardware to get the same thing & they walked me to the items, they cut the item, and asked me what I was using it for, showing great interest. You'll never get that at Bill's. I've seen this level of indifference for quite some time. I'm not a new customer, I've been going there for 35 years, primarily because it's close to my home. Called up Garden Store to see if they stocked Scott's Turf Builder Summer Guard fertiliizer. The sales person assured me they did. I drove to there to purchase it only to find they did not have it. No one in the store would own up to giving me bad information over the phone. I shall not return. read more

And once again Bill's is outstanding! It's nice to go into a hardware store and find exactly what you need. The times when they didn't have the right item, the knowledgeable employees usually come up with a good work around. Some items are a little more expensive than the big box stores, but that small cost pays for convenience, knowledge, and a pleasant attitude. read more

I'll never shop here again. I Bought a $30 dollar tube to go sledding with my family. It ripped the 2nd time down the hill. I took it back in and was told no returns or replacements. Not even an offer for me to buy another one at any type of discount. I live 2 blocks from here, but will be taking my future business elsewhere. It's not about the money, but the complete lack of customer service. I guess retaining local customers doesn't mean much these days. read more

They could take customer service lessons from the hardware store just north of them. When I ask for an item I usually just get a finger pointed to the generall direction of an item and an answer of "downstairs" or "aisle 5." read more

Went in there on a Sunday, thinking they closed at 6. They close at 5 on Sunday, I got there maybe 5 minutes before 5. I asked them if they could do a custom glass cut and they didn't bat an eye. They said "of course" and did the cut for me even though it kept them to after closing time. It was maybe 10 after 5 when they finished. Great customer service. Need something obscure? They have it and they'll show you where it is too. I don't know if anyone has said this but there is a guy in there absolutely crazy for all things barbecue. Bill's has tons of grills--from the everyday to a crazy big Big Green Egg--and one of the associates will give you all kinds of pointers. Looking for a gift for the guy (I know--sexist) who has everything--get him a new grill. They'll help you pick out one that will thrill him. read more

This place is OK, but very expensive. If you live nearby, you're paying for convenience, which is fine, but seriously some of the items here are like 20% higher than MSRP. Especially the Weber products, and don't even think about asking them to pricematch any other store or even charge you just MSRP, they will say "this is my price, if you don't like it go elsewhere". I'm fine with that, and I do go elsewhere most of the time unless I am desperate, but other hardware stores and especially big box stores are way less expensive. I am rating it two stars instead of one because about 1/2 of the staff here are actually quite helpful/friendly, which is rare these days. Too bad the other 1/2 of the staff are rude/useless. read more

I agree with a lot of reviewers, this place is expensive and the selection isn't that great. But you are paying for convenience and the expertise they provide. I've asked these guys probably thousands of dollars worth of advice and how to do stuff and they are always helpful. The difference is totally noticeable compared when I go to Home Depot and need to replace a switch, search everywhere for someone to help, and when I find someone they don't know enough to know whether the switch I am buying is the right one . So I won't buy 50 bags of mulch there, but odds and ends I need and some advice, they are the place to go. Also, this True Value is the main place to get rental gear in Western Arlington. read more

Skip all the big box stores like HD and Lowes. The guys here know what they're doing and they know the products they offer. Shop local and get advice from local knowledgeable people not corporate automatons. Know your taxes are helping to pay for your Fire Department, your Police Department and your teachers--supporting a quality community. I actually save time by shopping here instead of going to the gigantic box stores. They know 20 times more and they offer quality selection. read more

The local store with whatever you need for your home or garden. Ok, the staff isn't the most outgoing, but if you are, and you ask, they will give you whatever help you need. Yes, a bit more expensive then the big boxes, but think of the time savings (getting there and wandering around the big store), and you'll find it is well worth it. I heard their grill prices are actually lower than the big boxes. Also, you can order anything from truvalue.com and have it shipped to the store! read more

Bills has two stores just across the street from each other - a H/W store and a Garden Center. Bill's H/W on Buchanan is a typical hardware store, a little larger than most. Extras: They have a tool-rental section They exchange propane tanks They have a --HUGE-- BBQ Grill and accessories selection downstairs - check it out! Bill's Garden is across the street, across Lee Hwy. It is the best of the 'local' garden centers. But their live plants are pretty poor. Accessories and consumables are great. Huge clay pot selection! Their topsoil is funky - avoid. The staff (at both stores) is quirky or worse. After 20 years, they are just barely friendly to me. They are knowledgeable, but it seems they resent the white collar DYI people in the surrounding neighborhoods. I have seen them treat homeowners who are trying to understand something new to them - especially women - rather shabbily. Bill himself has ZERO personality, but I haven't seen him there for a few years. Beats Homeless Depot by far! Also try: Cherrydale Hardware or Ayer's in Westover. Cherrydale is smaller, and Ayer's is the best of the lot, except for Bill's specials like garden or grills. read more

Incredibly friendly and knowledgeable staff. I live in the neighborhood, so this is my local hardware store. Every time I have gone in, the staff have been on point. I am not especially knowledgeable about home repair projects, but the staff have always been able to answer all my questions and set me going in the right direction. Nowadays it's so rare to find such a human element in their customer service. The owner seems to remember everyone who walks through the door and asks them how past projects turned out. Given the location of the store, I would love to shop here regularly but bottom line is they are at least 20-25% more expensive than home depot / lowes. On some items they are almost twice the price. I find that staff at Bill's hardware rude and unhelpful. While spending over $800 on a grill, they acted as if I had purchased a light bulb and had very little knowledge of the Weber products. I have lived in Arlington for over 15 years and prefer Cherrydale Hardware as the staff at that hardware store are consistently helpful and know the products they sell. It is as if the hardware staff at Bill's are on some rehabilitation community re-entry program. Their knowledge is very limited and their attitude is hardly customer friendly. read more

I have been to this location a few times and I have to say that I love this store. The people here are true characters. The service is at the store is excellent and they have pretty much everything you could want for whatever job. If you live or are ever in the neighborhood you should stop by and check them out, especially the garden center.
