Even if you think you don't know the brand, you might recognize Manner wafers when you see them. Their classic Neapolitan wafers were introduced in 1898 and are hazelnut-cream filled wafers. Josef Manner opened his first stop next to St. Stephen's Cathedral. I'm not sure if the current shop is located in the same place as the original shop, but it's certainly close by (just across from the cathedral). The shop is tiny, but it's well stocked - full of the classic Manner wafers but also additional flavors and a million other items related to Manner. Given the company's history, Manner wafers make a perfect souvenir from a trip to Vienna. Stop by and take some home - whether you love them already or not.

Crunchy wafers with chocolate and hazelnut cream in between. Located across from St. Stephen's Cathedral, I had to come visit this shop. You can get Manner in different flavors and shapes, and packaging: giant box, small bag. They have chocolate-covered Manner. So many options I didn't know exist. My mind was definitely blown. Keep in mind, these wafers have a rather short shelf life. Be sure to eat them within 6 months after purchasing them or they'll be expired. I've actually eaten expired Manner before and it was rancid! They also have Mozartkugeln (chocolate ball with marzipan and pistachio in the middle), individually wrapped chocolates and pralines. For serious Manner lovers, you can get liqueur, a t-shirt, a bag, and a hoodie, teddy bear, flash drive, snow globe, and all kinds of little accessories.

It is a complete grocer, albeit on the small side. They have a small produce section that seems to have fresh stuff. I believe there's a pretty high turnover of the produce, since this place keeps so busy. They have an unprecedented selection of Mozart Balls. They've got nearly every variety sold. Nearly. They have them in different packages, display cases, and flavors! The candy selection was quite diverse for such a small shop. They offer a shopper loyalty program, with sign up kiosks in store. Too bad I didn't sign up, since I seem to have visited so many of these Billas throughout Europe! They also sell cold beer on the cheap! Prost! While leaving, I discovered that there seems to be a whole other half of the store downstairs from the street level. I didn't see how to even get down there, but it seems that's where they keep the toiletries. I might've given a higher rating if I'd been able to figure out how to get down there. Meh. The clerks are never too friendly in these Billas. The aisles are packed with tourists, and they're too narrow to easily get past. Well, my review is not intended for the locals. It's meant for other travelers who may be in need of a few fresh groceries while staying in central Vienna. The best thing going for this Billa branch is the fresh fruit section. I found some remarkably fresh and very sweet grapes, along with some berries and other fruit, here. (I shopped at several other grocery stores, including other Billas, during my trip, but didn't find any other fruit as good.) Prices weren't too bad. The store is fairly small, but you can also find freshly-baked breads and pastries, chocolates and candies, deli meats, dairy products, juice, etc. The main disadvantage is that because this store is in a high-volume tourist location and is very small, it is pretty much guaranteed that you will be bumped (or will bump into someone else yourself) while you are shopping. The stock clerks can be a little aggressive trying to get their jobs done as they constantly compete for space with all the shoppers. I had the unpleasant experience of having a cashier take a somewhat unfortunate tone with me because I brought the fruit to the register without having weighed it and gotten a computer-printed price tag for it before I reached the register. Since this store is used by so many tourists (as well as locals) it would make sense for the shop to put up very clear signs indicating that it is necessary to weigh your fruit before taking it to the register -- as in many other countries, the produce is officially weighed by the clerk, not by the customer. Also, it would be better if the store stayed open a little later. In sum, it's an option if you need some fresh food in a jiffy and can put up with the crowding. (Of course, if you have the time to shop with more leisure, you'll find a much better selection of fruit and other produce at the Nasch Markt.)
