One section has the grab-and-go goods like sandwiches, beer, water, as well as the prepared foods counter. The other side is more groceries (meat, eggs, ice cream, etc). It's a little inconvenient as you have to line up, pay, walk to the other side, line up and pay again. But I can see given the location why theft is an issue.

I was a bit confused about the barricades they put up at random. seems it has to do with some law about having too many customers in a shopping space and thus considering it as "two" markets by dividing it? not the store's fault - as usual, it's unnecessary government interference - but just be warned if you go at peak times (late nights) that it may be tough if you need items strewn about the store. plenty of grab-and-go options (sandwiches, salads, pre-made meals) that looked pretty good, as well as a deli and small bakery. there's a much larger Interspar further in Wien Hauptbahnhof, as well as even cheaper options down Favoritenstrasse - but if time and convenience are needed then the Pronto is worth a stop.

That meant almost daily trips to Spar for fruit, yogurt, cold cuts and beverages. This location is fairly small, but had pretty much everything we needed. The aisles can be cramped, especially when the place fills up after school with kids buying snacks. That said, we found that prices here were generally less than the nearby Billa. Of note - there's a good and reasonably priced wine & beer section, and their prices on the ubiquitous "Mozart candies" are way better than the boutique places in the Inner Stadt. Stock up on your candy souvenirs here and save some euors.

After renting an apartment with a "European sized" fridge, I understand why everyone shops at stores like this. They have everything you need, just in small quantities. You just can't stop up on groceries here like we do in the states. This particular location was very well stocked for a store its size. Most things are "grab-n-go", single serving size. I am particularly fond of purchasing single cans of beer, especially in the .5l size. Checkouts were always friendly and efficient and the total was always way less than I expected. We were here 5 times in 8 days. I think they should change there logo to "Jeden Tag Spar!"

We stayed about 2 blocks from this Spar market and used it frequently in the latter half of our…read moretrip. We visited ~ 3 others as well while we were wandering around Vienna, so we got a decent feel for them. We used these to mostly to buy breakfast items for the next morning, and saved an appreciable amount versus dining out for breakfast. So I was grateful to have access to a Spar nearby. There are quite a number of Spar markets near the center of Vienna. You will encounter them every 6 - 7 blocks, it seemed. The concept is that they squeeze as much of a regular supermarket as they can into relatively small spaces. There did not seem to be a standard layout, so each varied somewhat. The aisles snake around whatever area they have, and are narrow. Given the reduced shelf space, they may need to restock shelves during the day (versus after hours), which can lead to extra congestion. Spar offers small baskets which you can use to hold your items before purchasing. They do not have shopping carts, as there would be no room for them in the store. While I would not describe shopping at Spar (especially in the evening) as a pleasurable experience, I doubt that I could design a better market given the space constraints. It serves its function. My description above is not meant as a criticism. Spar is trying to make the grocery store concept fit into the space model they have. This requires some compromises. It isn't that they are doing anything 'wrong', just that there may not be a better way to handle this. Note that each store seems to have its own hours, which may not correspond to the next closest store... If you can go earlier in the day (at least not within 2 hours of closing time), crowding seemed to be lessened. Also, they tend to close off some shelves (with curtains) and dismantle things like their large fruit-juicing machines an hour or so before they close, so that is another reason to go earlier. Lines can snake back from the check-out stations quite a ways. As you get closer to check-out, they may have someone directing you to an open register (or they may not). If you want a bag to carry home your purchases, they sell those near the check-out (for a nominal charge). Or you can bring your own. One Spar we visited seemed to have fruit flies on the pastries in the evening, but it was not this one. After that, we were extra vigilant in inspecting the fresh bread. We never saw them elsewhere. After the trip, I do have a fresh, unexpected appreciation for the local, less space-constrained grocery stores back home.

Once I had the 3 items that they did sell in my basket (planned on getting ~20) and queued behind the 3 check outs that are not across from one another but in a relatively narrow line, I found it interesting and irritating to see that people kept skipping the queue and form little groups in front of all check outs. One of them became empty and so the clerks waved ahead the next in line. And after that, she kept waving. "Oh, they even encourage that chaos", I thought while stumbling towards her in a confused manner. After having waited way too long and it finally almost being my turn, one Austrian behind me asked his friend "Can you tell me why people all queue behind just one check out?" I thought "Because there is not enough space for three queues, you moron? And a-holes like yourself have obviously never heard of respecting others who wait as well anyway." Finally, my total is 5,37. I hand 10,42 to the clerk. She asks "10,42?". "Yes." At least she didn't start an argument but just typed it in and at that point probably realized that she should maybe train her mental arithmetic skills more. Having worked as a checkout clerk myself for years when I was a student, I understand that these things can be difficult to grasp at first if you're not used to paying with cash. But considering how routinely and confidently she yelled across the space and waved people ahead, I doubt that it was her first month or so.
