I began taking lessons from Bill a few weeks ago. I found him from a google search. I really enjoy his teaching methods. When I started taking lessons I had a little bit of experience under my belt, but let's face it, much like a lot of golfers I wasn't very good. Bill's teaching method is very simple and easy to understand. He has a camera so he can do a video analysis of your swing. This is cool because he is able to pinpoint areas of your swing that need improvement. Bill is friendly and doesn't stare at the clock during your lesson. I like that Bill instructs at the Mission Bay golf course because it is a more laid back environment. This is very positive when you are nervous about learning and having people watch you. I took 2 privates with Bill and then 6 weeks of small group lessons. We had a group of four and met once a week in the evenings. Before I started, I had never even picked up a club. After two months of lessons, I played in a Scramble (on an Executive course at Liberty Station) and I pretty much kicked ass! Bill is straightforward and knowledgeable. He clearly knows everything about the game and has great techniques that both beginners and the more advanced golfers can benefit from. There was one very experienced golfer in my group who said his swing improved immensely after our group lessons. Bill is extremely thorough in explaining everything, from how to hold a club, to the science behind the breathing. The core breathing techniques really worked! His prices are very reasonable for the level of one-on-one attention. He worked out something that worked for the four of us and it was a great deal. He had to put up with a lot between me and my equally high-strung, yappy girlfriend and he took our antics in stride. Instead of telling me to "relax" or whatever common golf swing comments, he says completely different things, like pressing on your toes, how to breath while swinging. Prior to my first golf lesson, I was a little nervous as I didn't know what to expect. As a women who wanted to take up golf, I wanted the proper instructor and environment that would allow me to feel comfortable and not judged for being a beginner. Scheduling a lesson with Bill was very easy! I simply called and set a time that worked with my schedule, and he was very flexible with dates and times. Bill's setup is very easy to spot at the driving range. Just look for the black tented setup with camera and signs that say "Bill Westerlund's Golf Instruction". Helpful Hint: The first time I drove to Mission Bay Golf Course, Google maps dropped me off at the back of the golf course by the tennis club. Be sure you are at the entrance by the Mission Bay RV Park and not the tennis club. Bill is very patient and educational. He focuses on teaching the power of core breathing techniques and using that breath as energy while playing. He gives you step by step instructions on position and angles of what your body should be doing while swinging. He also films you and will analyze the tape right there after you swing. This is so helpful, as I am a visual and hands on learner and this allowed us to see what I was doing right and wrong. Bill would compare the film to a pro like Tiger Woods or Michelle Wie, and then I could apply what he instructed me to make changes. His breathing technique really works! It seems like no one has posted in the past 2 years, so I thought that I'd chime in and say not much has changed except the location. He forced me to take 2x60 minute lessons rather than the 4x30 sold on the GroupOn. However, he didn't complain about GroupOn as Jason noted previously. Andy was spot on with regards to Bill's opinion of his own instructional methods and time he spends on self-promotion rather than your actual instruction. You need to be super-focused and ask him to stay on the 1-3 swing issues that you want addressed or he'll waste most of the session on whatever catches his attention. If you buy FIVE LESSONS by Ben Hogan, you'll understand the key concepts he offers (via photocopies from the book!) - except for this unrelenting focus on core breathing. Well-timed core breathing has certainly been proven to focus power in a variety of activities - and there's no doubt that it works for a golf swing. However, it seems like putting the cart before the horse when it comes to things basic stance, grip, swing mechanics, etc. read more

I know it's long but you have to read this. It's pretty ridiculous. I went to the driving range and remembered I bought a Groupon for lessons with him. I walk up and say hi and that I wanted to schedule lessons with him. His 1st words were, and I quote: "Did you buy a Groupon" (Yes) "Do you know how Groupon works?" (Um yes) "So you know that I don't make any money off of this? And you could've just ordered it from me directly?" After apologizing and explaining that I bought lessons from him and another instructor so I could compare. He says, and I quote: "Well what sets me apart is that I focus on breathing. I teach breathing techniques. I'm the only instructor in the nation that does that" (Really?...) He didn't even ask what I'm trying to work on, skill level, or even my name! Bottom line, I operate a local small business in hospitality/tourism so I know a little about service and how to talk to people. And this was an example I have used to show my agents how not to talk to people. How am I supposed to golf now with this playing in my head? I was pissed! He obviously doesn't teach about the mental aspect of the game. I still decided to hit balls after that uncomfortable 1st conversation and watched him train a student. And it reminded me of Chubbs from Happy Gilmore when he was not interested or engaged with the person whacking away. Bottom line, use him if you want but don't get him on a bad day. And try someone else to compare. I've used other instructors now and we they all laugh at this. And those instructors have helped me fix my slice in 1 lesson! I'm sorry that you have to resort to Groupon but if you don't want people buying them then you have to invest in marketing, brand management, and the #1 lead source - referrals. Don't chastise anymore potential clients for purchasing lessons through a channel you use. read more

May know how to improve your golf game but not tuned into student. The day of my lesson he was struggling with new software and spent a good deal of the lesson fussing with it. When he did talk to or watch me, I felt I was getting cookie-cutter advice and that his mind and focus were elsewhere. Spent most of the lesson telling me how Tiger hasn't reached his potential because he won't take lessons from him. Then when he did get around to looking at my swing he gave me way too many things to focus on; I had a huge checklist in my head which made it impossible to improve. We've been taking lessons with "Coach" Bill regularly for the past several months at Mission Bay GC.
