The only thing they don't sell is bikes! In fact you could build a bike from all the parts and…read morecomponents they do sell! But I think where they really excel is bike repairs and the service they provide is second to none. Just tell them what's wrong with your bike, leave it with them and when you pick it up soon afterwards it will be fixed. Sounds simple right? Well you wouldn't think so by the poor service some companies offer in this city. They have a huge range of handy stock, from light to locks, for the casual or regular cyclist. I would always head here first if I was looking for some accessories or some friendly advice. Strangely or not they are also a DIY/hardware shop, perhaps this is why they are so great at repairing bikes. But they have a huge range of this stock too; nuts, bolts, hammers, nails, screws...you get the idea.

Erk I'm not even sure I want to tell anyone about this place, I'm feeling all possessive and smug,…read moreit's my little secret... OK then, this is a repair place and somewhere to buy parts for your bike. Unlike some other bike shops in Bristol I could mention, it is neither obsessed with high-end mountain bikes nor demands five months notice to book your bike in for a check up. As long as you are good to them (please phone when you can't make your appointment, this is a small business!) they will be great to you. I always feel that I haven't been fobbed off with the most expensive brand replacements and never ever felt that I was talked down to for being a girl with a girls road bike. However if you are a boy with an expensive bike toy, then you also will have a chance to talk gadgets with the owner so don't worry! Find the stall inside the St Nick's market building, diagonally opposite to the cafe.

There's nothing I'd love more than buying a posh bike from here and whizzing down Blackboy Hill,…read moreWhiteladies Road and Park Street before taking a peaceful cycle ride along the docks. The reality is, I live on a huge hill and would have to drag myself and the bike back after, which would not be quite so exhilarating. It makes me very sad how hilly Bristol is, I'd be cycling all the time if it were flat. This doesn't put off a lot of cyclists in the city though, and this shop is a vital retailer to the people of Clifton and surrounding areas. They have a selection of top of the range bicycles, as well as bikes to hire, spares and other cycling gadgets.

Family run and very welcoming, Blackboy Hill cycles offer an excellent service, both for repairs…read moreand for purchases. For the latter, they've got a massive range of bikes, and are main distributors for big brands such as Falcon and Haro. They check each bike before selling it, and also offer a free service for every bike they sell. On the repair front, they work very efficiently, usually diagnosing the problem whilst you wait and never taking longer than a few days to get it fixed. They don't charge extortionate prices either, and you get the impression they really care about doing a job well. The only down side I can think of is if you get here from any other way than the direction of the Downs, it's a real trek to get to on a bike (fix it to your car and drive up the hill instead!).

There's a patio area where you can sit outside and enjoy the beautiful view of the waterfront. It was unfortunately too cold that day that we went so we opted for indoor seating which was just as nice. We had full breakfast and crepes with Nutella. Both were great! They were working on the coffee machine that day so coffee wasn't available and the server was extremely sorry about that. I would definitely recommend this place.

The menu crosses lots of boundaries - apparently they started with a Spanish influence and have meandered across the globe picking up hints of various over countries. The result is best described as contemporary European with traditional British influences. The location on the docks is what I really like about the place. You get lovely views in an interesting old building, lots of light in the day time and the upstairs of a bike shop is certainly an original place to put a restaurant. It's fairly average for price with some good deals (the five pound lunch offer is a steal). Service is included in the price, which always annoys me. Mud Dock is a bit different with pretty high quality food.

Bristol is ALL about bikes!…read more With possibly the highest number of bike shops in the country (including London) Bristol has a whopping sixty shops, ten of these within one mile of The Bike Workshop. This might look like some pretty fierce competition but considering this business has been here for thirty years - they must be doing something right. Inside, the shop is stacked wall to wall with bicycles of every different shape, size, model, type and colour. I personally use my bike to get me from A to B but I've never really seen the appeal in cycling just for the hell of it - especially uphill! Having said that, within being in the shop for just five minutes I had already re-calculated my budget for the month with plans on a brand new Claud Butler. The main thing that has kept this shop going is the sheer dedication and passion from the staff that really are worth their salt. Another good point that keeps them up there is their selling of used bikes. Apparently this is quite rare in shops these days but these boys buy them, make them road worthy, then ship them back out again. They live, breath, sweat and probably eat bikes.

Just bought a new Marlin hybrid bike from these guys (I think it's a Kentfield 2), exactly the…read morefeatures I was after, and they were able to give it a service and sell it same day, which no other shop I visited has been able to manage. The staff were very friendly and knowledgable. They also let me take it for an unsupurvised test ride which was really great! On closer inspection however when I came to collect, I noticed a chip on the frame, and to compensate they knocked off some money, claiming it must have happened during pre-delivery servicing. This is a little bit unprofessional, not a deal breaker for me, though quite disheartening. However, I have since noticed a few other minor scuff marks, and other very minor signs of wear, enough to suggest to me that they LIED about the bike being "brand new"; it could be the bike had simply been sitting around for a while in store (not likely), but my instinct tells me it was a return, and had seen limited use by the former owner. I appreciate that it's very hard to get any stock at the moment and bike stores must be under considerable pressure to stay afloat, but I am utterly astounded at being so brazenly taken for a ride. It seems to be in very good condition, it's hard to get your hands on the right bike in this economic climate and sold for less than sticker price so... I am loath to complain about anything but the flagrant deception, which I dearly hope I am not mistaken about as otherwise I have no complaints (well... except they didn't have any mudguards in stock!). There are enough horror stories about this store on here to make me want to get a second opinion though, in case there are any more surprises.
