I have to say, I didn't experience the same rudeness or poor service as the guy who's previously reviewed this restaurant. In fact, I found them friendly and attentive without being full-on, always a bonus if you ask me. Mud Dock featured in the second series of cool Brizzle teen drama 'Skins' , but even before Cassie parked her bum on one of its benches, this place exuded cool. Situated right by the water, a few yards from the Thekla, and above a mountain bike shop - the first thing you think is bloody great location and 'this looks soooo laid back.' Inside doesn't disappoint, you climb the spiral metal staircase into the main room, where light shines in through a huge round window and rows and rows of bikes hand over your head like some kind of modern art sculpture. The last time I ate here, with the parents-in-law a couple of weeks ago, I chowed down on calamari with delectable garlic mayo dip, following by one of the many daily specials - sea bass and parma ham and even managed a trio of creme brulee. The wine list is extensive and compliments the modern, but hearty plates of food. Dining too a while as it was a Friday and ultra-busy, but the moonlit views over the dock more than make up for the wait.

The reality is, I live on a huge hill and would have to drag myself and the bike back after, which would not be quite so exhilarating. It makes me very sad how hilly Bristol is, I'd be cycling all the time if it were flat. This doesn't put off a lot of cyclists in the city though, and this shop is a vital retailer to the people of Clifton and surrounding areas. They have a selection of top of the range bicycles, as well as bikes to hire, spares and other cycling gadgets.

For the latter, they've got a massive range of bikes, and are main distributors for big brands such as Falcon and Haro. They check each bike before selling it, and also offer a free service for every bike they sell. On the repair front, they work very efficiently, usually diagnosing the problem whilst you wait and never taking longer than a few days to get it fixed. They don't charge extortionate prices either, and you get the impression they really care about doing a job well. The only down side I can think of is if you get here from any other way than the direction of the Downs, it's a real trek to get to on a bike (fix it to your car and drive up the hill instead!).

The only thing they don't sell is bikes! In fact you could build a bike from all the parts and…read morecomponents they do sell! But I think where they really excel is bike repairs and the service they provide is second to none. Just tell them what's wrong with your bike, leave it with them and when you pick it up soon afterwards it will be fixed. Sounds simple right? Well you wouldn't think so by the poor service some companies offer in this city. They have a huge range of handy stock, from light to locks, for the casual or regular cyclist. I would always head here first if I was looking for some accessories or some friendly advice. Strangely or not they are also a DIY/hardware shop, perhaps this is why they are so great at repairing bikes. But they have a huge range of this stock too; nuts, bolts, hammers, nails, screws...you get the idea.

OK then, this is a repair place and somewhere to buy parts for your bike. Unlike some other bike shops in Bristol I could mention, it is neither obsessed with high-end mountain bikes nor demands five months notice to book your bike in for a check up. As long as you are good to them (please phone when you can't make your appointment, this is a small business!) they will be great to you. I always feel that I haven't been fobbed off with the most expensive brand replacements and never ever felt that I was talked down to for being a girl with a girls road bike. However if you are a boy with an expensive bike toy, then you also will have a chance to talk gadgets with the owner so don't worry! Find the stall inside the St Nick's market building, diagonally opposite to the cafe.

Relief that a normal, homely, down to earth cycle shop exists. The staff here are always friendly and they let you wander around the shop at your own pace, and are always happy to help you out with any biking issue you've got and can't get your head around! They also participate in the work cycle scheme. This shop is deceptively big - it is very long and goes all the way back, full of bikes and their spares. A great, family run business.

Fred Baker Cycles is a fantastic little family run bike shop on Cheltenham Road. It's a while since I chatted to them about the legacy f the business, but I think they have been going for over thirty years... or something to that effect. As you'd expect from a family business, the motivation to open the shop came from a passion about bikes, or perhaps more accurately, a passion for what bikes allows the rider to do. I pay regular visits to the shop and I'm offered as much of a welcome if I'm coming in purely for advice as I am to buy something. Obviously businesses don't stay in business if they don't make money, but everybody at Fred Baker seems to be able to somehow balance their passion for bikes, their willingness to be of help, and making sales s that they continue to succeed commercially, whilst at the same time being incredibly helpful. They do a lot to inspire people to take up biking seriously.
