I called ahead of time to check if there were any used bikes within my budget, fortunately there were. There is a free car parking lot on-site. I came here on a Sunday early afternoon and there were a couple of spots available. There are sanitizing wipes readily available. If I could give this shop 6 stars I would. I bought a used bike from Columbus Cyclery and within two weeks the gears were making funny clicking noises (definitely my fault) and the chain snapped (probably not my fault). My chain actually snapped a block away from Bike Hut, and a very well dressed homeless man who happened to see me tried to help me fix the bike. He actually knew a ton about bikes and told me I'd definitely need a new chain. He's been sleeping near oracle park and had seen bike hut, which doesn't have a very visible location (I live close by and didn't know it existed). Anyway, I digress... back to the review l. Michael has my bike fixed within 3 hours, charged me half of what Columbus cyclery quoted me and was very patient about helping me tune some of the other issues we identified. I rode halfway home and noticed another problem and when I came back he helped me further tune the bike. I'm really happy with the work and will be coming back here in the future. I was out with some friends trying to bike across the Golden Gate Bridge one day. We were on our way to the Ferry Building when something went wrong with my bike chain and I was no longer able to peddle. I was so bummed, looked up what bike shops were nearby, and this lil spot showed up. I walked my bike up and a nice lady asked me what was was going on so I showed her the issue with my chain and pedals. A gentlemen then came over to take a look at my bike- he took off my tire, adjusted my chain, re-assembled, gave me a little tool to help me out next time and told me to have a nice ride! We were able to to walk up and rent a couple of bikes for a few of hours on the weekend without making a reservation beforehand. They gave us each a bike lock and a water bottle as well. Parking is super easy in the area, which is a plus. The team was so genuinely friendly and down to earth. They asked us how our bike ride was when we were wrapped up. Today, was my first visit to The Bike Hut but it definitely won't be my last. Located at Pier 40 (South Beach Harbor) on the Embarcadero is a literal hut, painted yellow with a large sign that says The Bike Hut. Great thing about this location is that parking is available if your traveling from a distance and need to transport your bicycle via car. It's a fairly large parking lot with over thirty (30) available spaces. The Bike Hut is open Wednesday - Sunday from 10 am - 5 pm normally, but the adjusted hours due to COVID-19 is now Wednesday - Sunday from 12 pm (noon) - 5 pm. It's best to call first! The repair technician can provide a heads up on how busy they are. When I took my Pure Fix bike to be fixed because of a busted inter-tube, the repair technician told me specially when to come. In addition to repairing bicycles, The Bike Hut has a 501(c)3 Non Profit youth training and recycling program. This is a great opportunity to give back or donate gently used / wear bicycles. It's only fitting that The Bike Hut offers "bicycle rentals, sales, and repairs." Lastly, the best thing about The Bike Hut is that they accept "commuter checks," for payment. This was my first bike rental experience and Bike Hut is as good as it gets! This shop is located close to the AT&T park and conveniently 10-15min walking distance from Embarcadero BART. We arrived at 1:30pm the weekend of Fleet Week and noticed how reasonable the price was ($6/hour or $26/all day) and decided to give it a go. The owner was friendly and helpful when trying to find a bike that suited my boyfriend and I. Now, these weren't the types of rental looking bikes you'd see around the pier, these were stylish. He took the time to make sure each bike was in good condition and suggested routes to avoid traffic. Rentals include bike, helmet, and bike lock with keys. Before having us off, he gave us a map and a water bottle each. Including all our stops to take pictures and water breaks, it took us about 1.5hrs to bike to the Golden Gate Bridge. Although we both have been to San Francisco plenty of times, we never realized how much we missed out because we were in our cars. We stopped by Crissy Fields for our picnic and enjoyed the airshow. The amazing trek to Crissy Fields, Fort Point, GGBridge, Sausalito and back to the Bike Hut was16 miles. We got back an hour before they closed and paid our fees; the owner was nice enough to give us another bottle of water before we took off. Highly recommend this for tourist and Bay Area natives. Definitely a great way to be touristy and see all parts of San Francisco! Don't forget sunscreen!! read more

Great deal. The bikes were perfect for our needs and not easily identifiable as rental bikes. We biked all over the city. Even learned how to put the bikes on the rack on the front of buses. Come on, how can you NOT stop by the Bike Hut and not chat with Greg? He is not one of those crusty ex-racers who tells tales of how it was or how the bike community has changed since back in the day. You see Greg apparently does not make a whole lot of cash, but he enjoys being around people and getting them into biking and not just one type of biking. You see, he is not a purest, but a traditionalist. By that i am saying he pushes people to bike on whatever bike "moves" them both literally and emotionally. As for his little hut of goodies, he has all manner of bikes from Road, foldable and even track bikes for a rater decent price. Mind you, these bike are not brand new and will need a bit of love to them, but how can you beat a bike which costs under $200 bucks and won't kill you during the first downhill you hit. Greg is meticulous in his restoring, fixing and tuning up the bikes. So don't worry about the bike as it will be purchased with a air of honesty and love. Ok, that was rather hippy and new age of me to say, but I think you get the picture. In Summary, the Bike Hut is one of the last bastions of a bygone area of cycling community that is left in this consumer driven city we call San Francisco. To say that the Bike Hut is where the customer is just as important as the bike which is sold too is an understatement in that they look to match a bike that not only fits, but also will inspire the customer to bike and bike often. read more

I ended up renting a bike for $5 an hour or $20 for the whole day. Uhm - that, my friend, is the greatest deal you'll get along the Embarcadero. I appreciate the fact that it's literally a hut, near my house (and a hop skip away from Pac Bell..er, At&t Park) and it's a not-for-profit foundation. Not your standard tourist-y bike rental place. This is a friendly, customer centric, highly skilled shop. Highly recommend to start here instead of at the fisherman wharf. Avoid the headaches of renting at those touristy places. I put together a group of 5 coworkers as a team building activity. We got here at 10:15 and they had bikes ready for us. They also made sure we had helmets and locks... They even gave us locks for our other bikes we brought, for FREE. Highly recommend this place for bike rentals and repairs. It's conveniently located on the south side of the Embarcadero, so it's not crowded. The main guy who works there, Mike, is very skilled with bikes and extremely kind. I went there with a flat tire and he was able to replace the tire with ease and also gave me a complimentary check on the rest of my bike too to make sure that everything was in order. I will be going back here for all future bike repairs. I saw a number of people renting bikes while I was there, and looks like a very easy process to rent bikes by the hour or for the day. It's so much better than dealing with the hassle of renting bikes at Fisherman's Wharf. This place also has a NPO side to it to help youth, and I was happy to make a donation to its cause. read more

I love the guy over at Bike Hut. I tend to do things last minute so when a friend hit me up to ride in an adventure race with 2 days notice, I said, "yeah". It's a kayak, trail run, and mountain bike course. I felt strong on the first two disciplines but the thing is, I don't ride that often since I do not have a bike anymore (damn you bike thieves). I called a friend and he let me borrow his mountain bike. From the outside, it looked like a great bike but during that race I noticed tons of clicking and misalignment. It was handful but I still kicked ass. Moral of the story, if you have to ride a bike for a race, make sure it's yours and that you friggin' ride the thing before you are on the course;) My buddy did not need the bike so I kept the bike in storage and never rode it after that. When this new race came up I wanted to fix the bike. I only had an afternoon to fix it. My neighbor told me about the dudes at Bike Hut so I rolled over there at 3pm on Saturday. There were a few of the owners friends chillin' out and I felt like I walked into a bike messenger bar (think late 90's at the Tempest). But instead of being disaffected and snotty, they were SUPER cool and wanted to help me out. I could see right away that he has a love for all things two wheeled. I think he felt sorry for me. He decided to hook me up even though he was swamped with repairs. In about a half hour, the bike was %100. He only charged me 15 bucks for repairs so I gave him an extra $20 for his help. He fixed the derailleur, crank case, and sprocket and even gave me a proper sizing so I rode more efficiently. I gave it back to my buddy after the race and he was surprised at how well it rode. I am not a good cyclist but I'm in good condition and I can channel the Force if necessary. The bike was a dream and my buddy and I took 4th overall. Not bad;) If you are a tourist or a serious rider, head down there. read more

You may notice that I have relatively few reviews on my account. I have even fewer negative reviews (as in zero). I am generally concerned by Yelp's ability to allow a vocal minority of whiners to impact local businesses at the expense of larger ones. However, I have no such reservations in this case. The Bike Hut is absolutely the worst, rudest, most unpleasant small business in the entire ecosystem of SF tourism. 5 friends and I reserved 6 bikes on a recent Saturday and agreed to rent them for the entire day. We chose Bike Hut based on its relatively good reviews and price, despite an inconvenient location. Starting with the nearly 30 mins it took to fill the air in our tires and prep our bikes, the entire day was a disaster. 4 of the 6 bikes had significant problems including a broken chain and a faulty inner tube. We twice had to stop to call the Bike Hut and then create a plan to wait to have the bikes replaced via delivery. These stops each cost us an hour and in neither case was the proprietor gracious or apologetic. In the second case, he even questioned my honesty and integrity in reporting the damage and why we were not back already (it was 45 mins before closing time). 2 other bikes had significant problems with their gears. The overall quality of the bikes they rent is bad to terrible. We may have just happened to get a particularly bad batch but there was no acknowledgment of that fact from the proprietor at Bike Hut. Upon our (exactly on time) return, the proprietor paid for my cab fare as we had agreed. This cab was necessary for me to return the most recently disabled bicycle. He then, without a hint of apology, proceeded to demand our full payment. Our group insisted that we had not received the product or experience we paid for and would require a discount. When we agreed on something reasonable (trust me, zero would have been perfectly reasonable given how bad these bikes were), and we handed him the cash, the proprietor proceeded to curse us out for being the yuppies we are...of course! How could I forget that anyone who demands a modicum of respect and equal exchange in a business transaction is nothing but a spoiled yuppie? It's truly unfortunate that the flocks of tourists in SF continue to patronize this establishment. But with business practices like these I don't doubt that before long Adam Smith's invisible hand will do its work. read more

Upon moving to San Francisco, I suddenly discovered hundreds of 'friends' who wanted to come to California to escape the winter. They want to see Lombard St. Did they go see Lombard Street? Hell no. I put them on bikes I grab at Bike Hut for the ridiculous price of $5/hr and sent them across the Golden Gate bridge. In addition to the ultra-cheap rentals, this is the best place to get air in your tire, or have your pedals changed to clipless because you couldn't figure out that you had to turn the damn crescent wrench COUNTERCLOCKWISE while doing it yourself. read more

Top notch business. They treat their customers as they should be treated. Prices are WAY more than reasonable. $22 for the entire day, including helmet and lock. We were not able to make it back before closing time, and they told us not to worry, just bring the bikes back the next day sometime. They were also very helpful, guiding we dumb tourists around answering our questions, probably the same questions they've been asked over and over every day that their out there. But, they do it with a smile and an obvious willingness to assist. Don't rent from anywhere else! These guys steel the show. read more

I'm not sure why this place gets polar opposite reviews, as my experience was quite pleasant. A tandem bike rental is $39 ($36+tax) per day, and if you can't return it before they close at 6pm, you're allowed to keep the bike overnight as long as you store it indoors. In comparison, I've rented tandem bikes from Blazing Saddles at Fisherman's Wharf, which charges a whopping $60/day which is a complete ripoff. I've also rented from Stow Lake, which charges $35/day, but their bikes are the maintained the poorest -- about 1/3 of the time when you switch gears the chain slips off and you have to dismount and fix it. In my opinion, paying $4 extra at the Bike Hut is totally worth it for a properly maintained bike. read more
