This is our second year of taking out a group of about 8-10 family and friends and riding with Yvonne at Bike Catalina. Both years we have elected to do the "Ridge Route" where you get a ride from Yvonne and team from Avalon to the "Airport in the Sky" and then bike back. This is a great ride and by the time you get to Avalon you are ready for a nice cold drink and food. The first 4 miles are rolling Fire roads and the last 8 are all downhill. Views are fantastic and we had a blast seeing bison, foxes, and the sights. We are an "active" family and this was not a difficult ride but there are hills. We also like that there are no crowds to speak of on this trip. The airport is fun to see and most of the route is off-limits to the general public unless you have a pass. We came back for a second year because Yvonne and the team are simply amazing. They are so nice and the Catalina history lesson you get on the ride up to the airport is an added bonus. We had no issues fitting bikes for our group which included kids and taller adults. I highly recommend Bike Catalina. You won't be disappointed! read more

From start to finish, this is a fantastic service. Yvonne is a great host, pre and post communication is good, bikes are in good shape, just can't say enough. We did the ride from the airport, all of us are fit, but mostly beginners with mountain bikes. A few of the hills are tough, but nothing is too crazy. The views coming back are awesome. First a personalized guided drive from Avalon to the airport, showing points of interest and the island's history along the way, while familiarizing you with the route you'll take by bike on the way down, then an introduction to the airport snack bar and grounds, and finally assigning you your personally-sized rental bike with good front suspension, clean-shifting gears. and hydraulic disc brakes. AMAZING! We were a party of 6, age ranging from 22-60. Didn't know that this adventure needed to be on our family bucket list. First impressions are everything and Yvonne was fabulous! Yvonne is great and responsive. And the ride down from the airport is fun and beautiful. CHECK THE SAFETY OF YOUR BIKES *BEFORE* YOU RIDE OFF!! The rear axle quick-release on my bike was not tight and I only discovered this when I lifted the rear to move the bike at the halfway point. If I had hit a big bump the rear wheel would have fallen off resulting in a serious crash. I tightened it and finished. When I mentioned this to Yvonne she was much too casual. I also recommended that she have each rider do a safety check of their bikes before they ride off. So, check those bikes! read more

I absolutely recommend giving Yvonne at Bike Catalina a call and book a rental or ride. My mom and I brought our own bikes and booked a shuttle ride with Yvonne up to the Airport in the Sky. We got a great history and nature lesson on our ride up. She pointed out a lone Bison taking a dirt bath on one of the ridges. After having some lunch at the airport restaurant, we headed out on the 10 mile ride back to Avalon. Some of the hills proved a little much for my mom and she had to walk up a few of them, but was a real trooper. On her way back to town, Yvonne had caught up to us a couple miles from the Summit lookout point. She went above and beyond by giving my mom a lift up to the Summit lookout leaving just a downhill ride back to town. So gratefull!! read more

We have been going to Catalina for many years and have enjoyed many activities there. But we recently did the Bike Catalina ride from the airport down to Avalon, and it has been our favorite by far. Catalina island has significant terrain - from Avalon up to the Stage Coach ridgeline is about 1500 feet. So it is not something anyone would want to climb on a bike for enjoyment. But Bike Catalina drives you up to the airport that is in the middle of the island (~1600ft) and then you ride mountain bikes from there back down to Avalon. It's about a 10 mile ride with the first ~9 miles rolling hills running along the NE ridgeline from the airport to the top of Stage Coach road, where you finish with a steep, curvy descent into Avalon. I'm 57 and not in great shape, so it was definitely a workout and had a few places where I had to hop off and walk the bike uphill. But you don't have to be an athlete to handle it. Just realize you will have to pedal up some short gradual up hills or walk them. During the drive up, Yvonne gave us great background info on the island and the sites that you pass on the way up to the airport. The views are fantastic, you will likely see at least one buffalo - we actually encountered a whole herd, and it just feels great being out in the Catalina conservancy - which is 88% of the island, where at any given moment there are only a few hundred people - conservancy workers, hikers, eco tours, and special activities like this one. The airport has a nice little diner with delicious breakfast or lunch menus, and a gift shop with some great mementos for the island and the airport. Highly recommended! read more

She went over and above for our son who is paraplegic from gathering his trike freighted over to Avalon to giving him orientation of access points near Avalon to Conservancy's trails including a drive by to see Renton Mine Road access point which was gated and locked. No way for his trike to get through it. She agreed to allow my wife and I to ride with our son as she carted his trike to Catalina Island airport for his adventure. This is a must-do activity!! I chose Bike Catalina based on the reviews and we were soo happy with the experience. We had picked up the brochure and decided to check it out at the last minute. I called and assumed that I missed the opportunity, but Yvonne called me back and was sooo pleasant about it! We decided to bike down from airport in the sky to Avalon and were told that it could take 1.5-2+ hrs depending on your speed. We then arranged the time and pick up location at VONS and Yvonne took my family up to the airport, giving a tour along the way. It was really nice. The airport was cute (and has great cookies). We used the restrooms, took some photos and then hit the roads. I was pleasantly surprised at how doable this adventure was! I will be honest that I started to get really nervous as we drove up and I realized what I was getting into, but I'm soooo glad we did this. It was challenging, fun and soooo worth it!! The views were amazing. The hills were... hills. (I only walked up one!) but the ride down made it all worth it. We took our time and finished the ride in 3 hours. Yvonne let us keep the bikes for the day so we then rode all around Avalon and had a blast! This activity was the highlight of our trip and we will totally call Bike Catalina again we visit!! read more

This is a small business that runs a great service for those who are not athletic or have a lot of time training on the bike. For those who have never biked Catalina, do yourself a favor and call Yvonne. She took the three of us to the airport along a beautiful but dusty road. Going up the steep incline of Stage Road, it was the best $$ we ever spent getting up there. The 10 miles from the airport back to Avalon would be plenty challenging for the average person. Allow yourself 3 hours as recommended. You should shop for snacks/drinks at the Vons in Avalon. Yvonne will put them in a cooler full of ice and leave the cooler in one of the picnic areas on the way back to Avalon. That was really nice!! My friend had a gravel bike. I would pick a gravel bike over a mountain bike for this ride since it's all fire roads. Mountain bikes feel too heavy. Next time we go biking in Catalina, we'll be giving Yvonne a call. read more

Today was our third consecutive year doing this trip. It is spectacular and a must do. Yvonne and Lance will drive you up to the airport which is otherwise not accessible to the public. The airport is a worthwhile stop with excellent food and must have home baked chocolate chip or peanut butter chocolate chip cookies. And, possible up close views of the bison. We have seen them the last 2 trips up. From there, you embark on a downhill journey with some moderate uphill climbs on the rolling hills. You will likely see foxes as well. However, the highlight is the unobstructed views of the surroundings and to die for ocean views. On a clear day, you will see all the way to the mainland. You get away from the touristy main area and the crowds. No rush to get down and you can stop and enjoy the views any time. This trip is a must do. We love every minute of it. And, Yvonne and Lance are so accommodating and such nice hosts. Don't miss out on this incredible experience. read more

This company is great! Yvonne picked us up in front of the local grocery store as discussed and had our bikes ready. She has lived on Catalina many years and has an extensive knowledge of the island and it's history. She stopped to point out things to see along the ride. We drove to the airport on top of the island in the fog. It was cool and amazing! A good thing to do is grab some food from The restaurant in the airport. The guys there are super friendly and the food is awesome! My husband recommends the breakfast burrito. I had chicken tacos that were awesome. We took them on the trip and ate at a small picnic area a little over half way down. The road is bumpy in a lot of areas but smooth sailing by the eucalyptus trees! We saw a herd of about 20 Buffalo up on a ridge. We had binoculars so we got a better view. Stopped to see the zip liners sailing down the mountain too! Pretty fun! I highly recommend this if you love bikes. I'm 62 and going uphill in areas was a little challenging but I just walked that part. It's so peaceful up there it's like another country. Thanks Yvonne! Beware!!! This is an unsafe terrible experience. The bikes are run down and the owner is a terrible human. We took our family on what was supposed to be a great day of fun and found ourselves on top of a mountain in record breaking heat which forced us to ask to be brought back down. The owner said no problem and wouldn't charge us full price only to find out that he did charge us. Thought something was off when he said his receipts didn't work. Scammer for sure!!!!! read more

Feels like home =) I love love love cruising on my bike and I was thrilled that they were renting out bikes on the island. We had some time between kayaking and snorkeling to kill so we paid $30 for both of us to ride until 5pm. I'm only 4'11 and they had some cruisers that I was able to fit on. Randy is very friendly and took great care of us. The bikes are well cared for and the brakes work. These hills are steep so be careful and assume no one else is looking out for cyclists on the steep mountain roads.
