Im a professional photographer from Colorado, and over Christmas I found myself in a jam while visiting family. I had a lady minute job and no lighting equipment. I was able to rent what I needed from here at an excellent price. The service was out of this world. On an extremely busy day I had friendly attentive service from multiple employees from the minute I entered the door. I was able to spend Christmas completing my assignment, and the return after Christmas went equally as well. My only minor complaint is that I had to find the manual online, luckily that wasn't too too tough though. Had my film developed there many times, and have been screwed over many times as well. They regularly cut my frames in half and on multiple occasions have given my film back to me completely blank. Poor customer customer service. I wanted to copy a 30 year newspaper article size 10"x12" cut out. I called Biggs and I was told I needed permission from the newspaper. Finally bit the bullet and crossed over to the digital side. I have shot 35 mm FILM since 1976 and have always used manual settings on my camera-first with my Canon AT-1 and then on my Nikon FM3A. I believe I am a better photographer because of it. Anyway, Christmas money was burning a hole in my pocket so off to Biggs. The staff at Biggs were very welcoming w/o being pushy. The young man who ended up helping me was very knowledgeable and accommodating w/o being pushy. He readily answered all my questions and checked on a couple of things for me. Fantastic specialty store- you won't find the usual customer service methods so temper expectations but if you want knowledge and expertise in the area- then this is your place. Strongly suggest this for beginners and above- they don't try to up sell you but rather ask for your goals and marry them with the things that will work. If only more stores worked this way! Really bad service. I bought a $70 battery from them that turned out didn't work with my led ring light. I brought it to them and they turned me away saying it's over the ten day return policy and that I didn't have the packaging. The packaging was a clear plastic sleeve that I threw away and it's been 14 days since the purchase. Because of their rigidity I now own an expensive paperweight. Horrible experience, horrible customer service. Left work early to get to Biggs to have a Canadian Passport photo taken, only to be told I need to bring the passport specification paper with me and leave it with them. In the digital age that we are in, it is shocking to hear that they are not able to pull up the current spec online, and use it to ensure the correct photo requirements are met. They would rather lose a customer, then figure out how to go online and get the spec...of which I offered to do while in store. Just wasted an hour of my life. Such a shame when I imagine the local camera store is fighting for business with the likes of B&H or Amazon. Unfortunate. I went in to store with no intention on purchasing anything. I already had my camera equipment and all I had was questions on how to use them. I just spent 1500 on new equipment and told the sales rep. He was very patient with me and walked me through the "how to" with everything. He spent almost an hour with me knowing I wasn't buying anything. He didn't even try to sell me something. If you're looking for customer service, forget about finding it there. I've shopped at Biggs over the past few years and have the tendency to run into the same rude associate. I've complained about him and his attitude quite a few times. He is supposed to be there to help you, but he is not and unfortunately, the store management does not see him as a liability and chooses to keep him on staff, no matter how far he goes with expressing his attitude towards customers that may have questions or are seeking some good advise on equipment and basic photography stuff. So don't shop at Biggs Camera. I'm a firm believer that you pay for what you get...and if you're like me and are looking to get customer service with a smile instead of a slick tongue, give your money to another photo shop, because you're likely to receive the slick tongue there. I went to Biggs to rent a lens for my Canon XSi. Biggs is in a nice area--although it's sort of on the fringe of leaving it. It's a camera store, so who cares. The inside of the store is old, but clean, with a equipment wall to wall. I was greeted by a warm gentleman who gave me the lens, and had us on or way in 10 minutes. We rented a Canon 100-400 lens. The lens was a mess. It was old and it showed. The lens was squeaky, and it decided to stop zooming and make crunching noises until it worked again 5 minutes later. The whole lens was just a disappointment. I would return to Biggs only if I needed a lens rental and was in desperation. read more

I shoot almost exclusively film, and this is the only place in Charlotte, that I'm aware of, that still sells most supplies needed for traditional darkroom work: paper, fixer, film, developer, et cetera. On the analog side, they don't have a huge selection, and it's more expensive than mail order...but that's to be expected. If you're surprised by that...well...bless your heart, I just don't know what to tell you. We're in the twilight of film...really. From my experience, the staff isn't overly friendly...but that really isn't the right word....they won't bother you unless you ask, generally. To me, this is a good thing...I can't stand me an overly clingy salesman. Some other reviewers have said their staff is rude, but I've never seen anything like that in all my years of going here. read more

Went in to get passport photos for hiking visas for a trip to Nepal. Staff was a little rude, and not very helpful. Over all poor customer service. I got my film developed here after having an amazing place in Raleigh. After getting ye digital images back, I noticed that they were super pixelated. I called twice to learn more about it and found out I somehow opted for the "standard resolution" option without knowing. Even with this, the image quality is so low that it seems unfair to label it as standard. After, I went to the store to pick up my negatives and see if I can get any sort of refund but they just told me that I must have overexposed my images and that's the reason it's "grainy". Also, it would be 1.99 per frame to get it redone meaning another $70 total. I wouldn't recommend Biggs AT ALL if you're in Charlotte especially if you have cherished memories on film and don't want them to mess up your shots and waste your money. read more

Super friendly and knowledgeable staff. I'm an amateur photographer and they are always patient with me and super helpful. It's intimidating going in and trying to ask a question that I don't know how to ask. They will speak at your level so you don't feel like a total idiot and help you make the right decision. They are family owned and operated and have reasonable pricing as well as camera and lens rentals! Great way to test out a product before dropping all your cash on it. I went to Biggs yesterday somewhat reluctantly because some reviews said it was hard to get waited on and the staff was arrogant. I was very surprised. Three people asked me if I needed help. They actually smiled. The person I worked most closely with was Brandee. She was very pleasant and helpful. Best of all she was patient with a customer (me) who wasn't quite sure of what I needed. She absolutely knew what she was doing. The rest of the staff did too. I went there on a Monday, mid-afternoon. It might be best to go there on a weekday. I was helped immediately but I suspect on the weekend the place is more crowded. If you want a patient and pleasant salesperson ask for Brandee! read more

I was trying to find a camera online to shoot our kids' sporting events with. I printed out a list and took it to Best Buy. The kid who helped us wasn't much older than my son and really couldn't answer my questions. They also didn't have 2 of the cameras I wanted to look at. The kid finally suggested I try Biggs Camera. Best advice EVER! You can tell the staff really knows their business! Our salesperson Troy was a walking encyclopedia of knowledge. After he asked me questions about the activities I would be taking pictures of he suggested the Nikon D7000 and even let me go outside to shoot some pictures. I've been back several times to use their printing computers to fine tune some images. I won't be going back to Best Buy! read more

I am a fan of Biggs Camera. Ignoring the fact that if you need a roll of Portra in Charlotte this is your only choice, they're good people and I have noticed an increase in knowledge and service as of the past year. Their used selection is also growing, I don't think it will be long before they have to add another case for it. This is a great thing; I love buying used stuff since it's cheap (A Pentax 70-200 F/4 for my LX was only $39), and I'm sure they make a much larger margin on it. They probably paid $10 for that 70-200, for example. I've bought and sold a lot of used equipment at Biggs. I usually buy my film and chemistry online, but if I need some film or Fixer and can't wait for a delivery I don't hesitate to buy it here. The prices are higher but not that much higher considering. Can you get more if you sell on Craigslist or eBay? Absolutely, but I'd much rather let Biggs take care of selling and let me use my cash to buy another camera, or more film, or whatever. Many times if you're selling a camera that's in demand (I sold an F100 there as an example), you will get a very fair price. Better than what Craigslist will bear. I don't use any digital cameras (only a Pentax LX and Mamiya RB67, and the Mamiya was bought used at Biggs), so I can't comment on their knowledge and prices on digital cameras and lenses. Everything I buy from Biggs is used, since RB's are out of production and they aren't a Pentax dealer for new equipment. My only complaint with their selection is they only seem to carry Promaster filters and general accessories. Promaster may not be a bad filter, but Marumi or B+W filters are proven and don't cost much more than Promaster. I don't buy filters from them. They have always been fairly knowledgeable and helpful--I love George, Troy, and Mr. Biggs particularly. There's a newer guy there now, a tall skinny younger guy. He's good too, but I don't know his name. Any questions I ask before I buy are answered (even questions I ask as a test to see if I can trust their advice). It's a crapshoot, I realize. I've never been treated unfairly at Biggs. I don't expect them to offer to wipe my ass either. read more

Biggs is notorious for their bad customer service, "know it all" attitudes, and high prices; however, I still buy from them due to the fact that when I want a spur of the moment purchase they are 1 of 2 stores close to me. With that being said, I wanted to detail an experience I had in their stores yesterday, because it was really the icing on the cake for me. I called to see if they had a lens I had been thinking about purchasing: the Nikon 20mm 1.8. They did, and the guy on the phone was really nice and said he would set it aside for me. I got to the store, and the guy put a uv filter with it. It is common to buy a uv filter with a lens, so I asked the guy who got out of the back for me how much it was. (This was a different, older man btw). He said $70, so I said I would pass on that and grab one online. (Normally I won't buy accessories from them, because you can find he same exact brand online for much cheaper. I only get spur of the moment purchases from them, and lenses are normally the same price everywhere anyway even down to the rebates.) Back to the story- so this guy looks at me like I'm stupid and goes on to say, "Well if you're going to put a cheap $10/12 filter on this lens you may as well just throw it away." I don't know if it's because I'm a woman or because I have an alternative hair style or maybe because I'm young, but either way that's not how you provide good customer service or how you upsell things! He continues to "educate" me on how Nikon makes a good piece of glass etc. I'm a wedding photographer, I've been doing this for 4 years now-I know exactly what I want and what to do with what I'm purchasing. And the fact remains that I'm buying this lens from you-if I want to take this lens and throw it in mud then you should be happy for me, and happy that I'm supporting your business. I give Biggs 2 stars instead of 1, because there are some friendly younger employees, they have a wide selection, and they almost always have what I want in stock. I would urge Biggs to educate their older employees on customer service. Being in customer service or the service industry my whole life, I really have a "thing" against people with bad customer service. I am also part of many photography groups, and the general feeling among professional photographers to amateurs in this area is that Biggs could use some work on how they treat us. read more

The low reviews I've seen just don't jive with what I have experienced in person, both my own shopping experience and seeing how the staff interacts with other customers. Their business comes in waves. 20 minutes it's packed. Then slow for half an hour and then packed again. If you stop by when it;s busy, you might have to wait a few minutes. But you're going to be talking face to face with an industry expert. Someone who shoots professionally or at least semi-professionally themselves. If they cannot answer a question you have they can usually find the answer and usually i seconds by checking with a peer. Moreover, everyone there loves what they do and love helping people. They do hate when people come in and take an hour of their time getting educated and then those folks go and buy mail order. Biggs often cannot match prices or deals from unscrupulous mail order dealers for several reasons. Canon, Nikon and Sony all have fixed minimum prices. If they drop below that they risk losing the line. They do NOT sell gray market imports (which is another way some dealers sell of cheaper but there is no US warranty). Lastly, they don't come up wit cheesy cheap bundles with inferior flashes, tripods etc. bundled in to get you to purchase stuff you don't need. They sell US products with all accessories and the full warranty. They stock an amazing supply of used equipment which they stand behind. They keep a good suppy of new gear on hand from amateur Point and Shoot cameras, to professional SLR bodies and lenses and everything in between. They stock studio supplies, film, lighting equipment, printers, darkroom equipment, paper and developing supplies, bags, etc. In short, they carry everything you need. They guys there from Steve (Biggs) to Troy, Jamie, Franklin, Edward and the rest all care about their customers. Give them a fair shake and you will be a lifetime customer. read more

I had an emergency on the morning I was leaving for Europe. I literally said to myself, "I could go to Best Buy, but I'm going to go to Bigg's because I can't take a risk." My experiences at Biggs have been quite different than many of the reviews posted here. For a small store, they carry an impressive array of goods, new and used, and the staff, mostly, seems to know their stuff. While I have had to wait to be helped, it's always been because the staff was busy helping other customers. One of the first items I purchased there we my digital SLR and the salesman who helped me was patient and answered all my questions. I've been a repeat customer, have purchased cameras, filters, a bag, cables, film, and have had film processed and images printed at Biggs. As for their prices, they seem competitive when it comes to cameras and lenses but their film and smaller items are quite pricey. In this day and age, when privately owned stores with knowledgeable staffs are few and far between, it's nice to have Biggs there when I need them. read more

Very condescending people. We had film developed and the outcome was very poor. We asked them to make tiff images too. They made them alright. Charged for 24 and only did 14. Not only that, they were pixelated. Dishonest, poor quality and bad attitude. Is this place a front for something? I don't see how they could possibly have any repeat business. read more

Great customer service. I bought a strobe, with an umbrella, light stand, etc. about a month ago. The strobe stopped working last week. I brought it back to Biggs. Explained to them that I had the strobe for about a month when it stopped working. I did not have the paper work, but could search for it if needed. They said that since they were the only people in the area that sold that brand, and it was a newer model so still under the manufactures warranty it would not be a problem. They took the broken flash, and gave me a new one right there. read more
