We are visiting Cape May and decided to go simple for the first night. After searching for a bit we decided on this restaurant. We ordered fajitas, a burrito and a taco salad, all chicken. The portions were small and food quality was not bad. Everything completely lacking seasoning, even salt and pepper. When I think Mexican l think spicy savory food. Also, there was almost no chicken in any of the items. I am giving two stars because Taco Bell is worse, but I wouldn't order here again. read more

I recently visited during the off season. But it was still pretty busy. The business enforced Covid safety protocols, everyone had masks, social distancing, etc. There was enough room for a few people to sit inside, and there was some outdoor seating as well. The interior is very welcoming and clean. All the workers were extremely friendly and helpful while ordering. The prices were as you would expect for the area, as it is right off the main tourist area of Cape May. The reason for 3 stars, was that the food lacked flavor. I ordered the chicken quesadilla. The quality of the ingredients was good, but I felt that it could have used some more flavoring or seasoning. The others that were with me said the same about their food. We all ended up using the different kinds of hot saucea they have available to add a little flavor to it. read more

So when I saw outside I was amazed and when I saw the menu I was even more amazed! I was so excited about everything I ordered and already planned what I was going to get the next time. BUT after waiting one hour The queso was just nacho cheese, no onions/tomatos/peppers or spices like most queso dips. The chips were completely burnt and tasted like burnt oil. Because the chips were so bad I couldn't even eat the nachos I ordered, the chips were dark brown burnt & the cauliflower was just as burnt. Waited on hold for five minutes on the phone, listening to others in the restaurant place their orders. We ordered fish tacos and chicken tacos. The orders come with 3 soft shell taco shells. Only problem is, there's nothing in the shell! The chicken taco had 3 tiny pieces of chicken, barely any cabbage or toppings. The fish taco had the same issue. The food was good but I was extremely disappointed with the street corn they served. If you look at the attached photo you will see that half the ear was dead. There is absolutely NO WAY this should have ever been given to a customer. And then to charge $3.95 for this was ridiculous. Big Wave is awesome. That's it. The only problem I have here is deciding every time between a burrito or an acai bowl; they are both amazing. The shop is super cool with benches and pillows and surf boards hanging from the ceiling. A lot of the boards have info about surfers who died riding them which is pretty crazy but cool. I had a Rio Bowl today and opted to add coconut on top for $1.00. Their Rio Bowls are delicious, and a small ($8.95) was big enough for lunch. I am absolutely obsessed with their granola which is soft and chewy and has a ton of flavor. They also put local honey on top. Their location on the boardwalk in Wildwood uses a different, crunchy granola and I really wish they would switch to the kind they use in Cape May. Everything here is totally recommended, it's a great spot to eat in or take out. read more

I really wanted to like this place. My family tried it twice this week. We had their breakfast one day then ordered for dinner another. The corn used for the elote was flavorless and the ground beef burrito bowl my wife had was bland, despite using fresh ingredients. She likened it to a burrito bowl her old college cafeteria would sell and said she would've been more satisfied with Taco Bell. My bang bang shrimp tacos were just ok and were missing the sour cream listed for tacos on their menu. My wife's bowl was missing sour cream as well; she had asked for extra on the side. Not a big thing. When picking up the order, I noticed my wife's ground beef bowl was prepared as a shrimp bowl by mistake. The ground beef bowl was the first item I ordered over the phone, followed by the elote and then I inquired about the bang bang shrimp on tacos before selecting that as my meal choice. The young lady did read the order back but I was distracted by my toddler and missed her mistake. When I brought this to the young girl's attention, instead of quickly fixing an easy mistake, she chose to lay blame stating: "well I read the order back". As someone who has waited tables full-time and part-time for 7 years and has trained dozens of front of the house employees on how to speak with and handle guests, I was really disappointed that this was the chosen way to handle this situation. She then walked away to the service window visually annoyed and told the cook that she needed a ground beef bowl and that "he said he didn't order shrimp but I read the order back to him." This is a very off-putting way to treat a new customer who is giving a local business an opportunity to create a loyal regular. I really wanted to like this place. read more

Walked a 1/2 hour to get açaí bowls at their 10 am opening. Employee opened the door saying, "I've got something to do (no explanation) we'll be opening an hour late." Schedules change & things come up--Big Wave could've posted that they were opening late on FB & Instagram. Disappointed. read more

I am a local and used to love the old big wave in there old location but sense the switch it sucks. It's not the new location that sucks it's the food. For some reason In the switch the food became terrible. The food is actual garbage that's priced insanely high. All my freind and I still stop in to show support to the community because it's a cool place but the food is so incredibly terrible. Like come on guys step your game up. Get a new chef or something. I used to love big wave but I cant get it anymore. The staff is all cool I love them all but not enough to buy that acme guacamole and ShopRite taco. It's cash only, so make sure you stop at the wawa before you walk in. Order at the counter and pony up that hard earned cash - no one escapes for less than $10. Then go sit down... This could take a while. So then your food comes, and its good. Not super excellent, but good. You finish and leave, and life goes on. So what have we learned? Wife digs their fresh salsa and laid back vibe, and I appreciate a business that takes risks and has achieved success for a second (or third?) season. We also learned that they make lots of different kinds of smoothies with all kinds of healthy and/or weird stuff. Overall, good for cape may, could be really great with a few tweaks. read more

I don't like having to post negative reviews. But this place was a disaster every step. Big Wave became Big Wait then Big Waste. Ordered three burritos. Waited a half hour. Watched other patrons who ordered after us getting their burritos before us. What was up with that?? Then after complaining to the frazzled girl working the counter, she went and found our order. As she checked them before bringing them out, she realized two of the three were wrong. So only one burrito got delivered to our table. So we waited for the other two. And waited. When they finally arrived, they were WRONG again. So back they went. Then one came out. Missing sour cream. But we ate it. It was a pork burrito. And it was cold. Then about ten minutes later our third burrito finally arrived. The one with the Mahi Mahi. By this time, my son had long finished his steak burrito (which barely had any steak) and we had long stopped trying to eat the cold pork burrito. And while the Mahi Mahi was at least the right temp, it was missing half the Mahi Mahi. It was impossible to find any fish in the burrito. It was just Mahi. More like a meh-hi burrito. None of the burritos had any substantial amount of meat on them at all. For $13 each! It was mostly all filler -- rice, beans, lettuce, salsa (if they remember to put it on), sour cream (ditto). I was looking forward to this place. They lost me at hello. How many mistakes can you make on one order of three burritos?? Apparently a lot. Thank goodness I didn't order for pick-up. Stayed in Cape May in early June during the COVID pandemic so not every place was open, but Big Wave Burrito offered free delivery, so we tried it out! So glad we did because they had the best chicken quesadillas we've ever had! Also really yummy tacos and chicken burritos. We loved it so much, we decided to order from there on our second night too! Went here a few weeks ago. Paid an fortune ($13.95) for a burrito which was mostly rice and little chicken. I realize it is Cape May in the summer but come on. If you are gonna charge that at least make something remarkable. It wasn't. No chips, no salsa. Just almost $14 for an everyday burrito. I make a better burrito at home. No reason to go back. Definitely not for the teen girls behind the counter more interested in their phones than telling me my order was ready. Has an interesting vibe and design inside. Surf boards all around, surfing video's on the TV, very California feel in a tiny little strip mall feel with about 4-5 store fronts. I have never left a yelp review but decided I had to leave a review for this place to warn people. This was maybe the worst burrito I've ever had. No seasoning, no flavor, if you like plain rice and beans and corn straight out the can, the shittiest roma tomatoes, I highly recommend. This wouldn't be a such a big deal if my mom and I didn't end up spending $40(?) on a burrito and plain quesodilla. It honestly almost made me cry.
