Had an Amazing experience with Dr Cardosa and his staff. He did TPLO surgery as well as fixed her torn meniscus on my 9 year old dog. From start to finish he was very professional and gave me a wealth of knowledge of everything that was involved in the surgery and recovery. We will likely need to have her opposite knee done in the future as we already know it has some inflammation and I will 100% be returning to Big River Vet to Dr Cardosa and his staff. read more

I came home yesterday and found my poor dog. Gnawing at his right leg again. So I called big river and asked them what they could give me to help him with this pain other than the medication. They already gave me, because they can't give him surgery until the 4th of October. And I got a very unconcerned receptionist. And she told me the veterinarian said to call my primary care Vet because they were closing at 4 o'clock and was going on a week's vacations, obviously I got upset because they already have all his information on file. So why did I need to call them? I guess they didn't like That response but I called my primary care anyway. So while I was waiting for the primary vet to call back. Big River called me to tell me that the Dr was no longer interested in doing my be loved pets surgery. WHAT KIND OF VETERINARIAN DR. WOULD LET A ANIMAL SUFFER BECAUSE HE DOESN'T LIKE MY ATTITUDE BECAUSE I QUESTIONED HIS INTAGERITY AND PROFESSIONALISM. read more

No option for negative stars. So here is my review, (sorry it's long) a week ago we went to Big River to have a mass removed from our dogs neck. We had been recommended by our vet as they didn't have a surgeon on staff. We called made the consult appointment for Monday, that went well. They told us Wednesday of that week they could take him in. Awesome! The mass was located on the back of his neck and it kept getting infected (prior to surgery) we knew it needed to be removed and we had been so happy they would do the surgery so quickly. The day of surgery we dropped him off and were told to call by 1:00 for an update and/or to pick him up. At 1:00 pm called and he was ready for pick up. Fabulous! We went to pick him up (COVID so only one person could go in) no problem went in to get him and to go through the discharge paperwork. Now again, this mass was located behind his head, on his neck... so while going through the paperwork I asked anything we can do to to protect the area.. was told no, we can't use dressings or a cone and to try a child's onesie.. didn't make sense as to the location a onesie wouldn't offer any protection... but okay we are not vets and going to do that... nope, didn't work. Called Thursday worried nothing to protect the area worried about infection and him getting at it... told nope we don't give antibiotics for "minor surgery" Fast forward to 1:00am Saturday morning (day 3, post surgery) dog won't settle, area looks infected so called ocean state. Told us to come right in. (They were amazing)! Area was infected so gave us antibiotics and a middle anxiety pill to keep him settled. Now Big River never called and or emailed to check up... odd to me.. but okay. Sent an email to them Friday night( prior to ocean state) thinking they are open Saturday... (they are closed on weekends) Sunday after ocean state visit at the ass crack of dawn sent another email, stating we took him to ocean state Saturday and now looks like a suture is open and added a photo of the area asking to be called Monday morning. Now, for sake of argument to naysayers nothing was protecting this area! This dog never left our side and slept in bed with us to try and make sure he never got at it... Obviously we slept at some point in the mist of four days and he did... anyhoo to get back on track.. sent email expecting to get a call first thing Monday after they read and saw the photo.. and I asked for a call... That would be a big negative! I received this... "Antibiotics are not routinely given after surgery unless the site is contaminated. Most incisions don't get infected. We never know which dogs or cats will need anti-anxiety medications unless the owner tells us in advance or lets us know after the surgery that the pet won't stay calm." YUP!!! Nothing on the photo, no phone call saying bring him in... NOTHING!!! So I call, again explain to the receptionist what is going on.. she said oh we have a 3:15 open... okay, um it's 10am... fine we will take it.. I hang up and call Hope Veterinary ( where he typically goes) explained everything! Dr.Mary who is awesome said okay bring him now. She and her staff fixed the area (he needed staples to re-close the area) and gave more antibiotics and saved the freaking day!!!! It is now a week and a day since the initial surgery. Not one follow up call. Not one check in email. Nothing! I have since received a call and email from Ocean State Veterinary and calls from Hope veterinary! Neither did the surgery but checking in to make sure he is doing okay! Big River are about the $$$$ and nothing else! I would never and I mean never recommend them! Call ocean state! If you need a phenomenal Vet call Hope and ask For Dr. Mary. read more

I literally just took my dog Sky who is an American Staffordshire Terrier here for a surgical consult. Fortunately, surgery is unnecessary. However, each and everyone on staff in this facility was incredible. I cannot say enough good things about this facility as a whole, the procedure, my dog had to undergo, was very uncomfortable to say the least and she struggled so they easily could have charged me to sedate her to perform it & they did not, that alone, shows the honesty, and integrity they maintain. Considering I had an incident a year back with another facility that wanted to perform a surgery on her leg without even taking x-rays to the point they gave me the surgical appointment not a consult appointment and actual surgical appointment. Needless to say two days later after pain meds she was fine so they intentionally misled me so It is nice to know I now have a facility I can trust God forbid one of my dogs ever need a surgical procedure in the future. Our pup Mr. Bingley got both of his CCL's repaired here. Dr. Dan and his staff were AMAZING. When going over our options they never pushed the more expensive one--which is generally recommended for dogs Bingley's size and were understanding that even the cheapest option was tough for us to pay for. When we ended up choosing that cheaper option they asked many questions to ensure that it would work for our guy (luckily he's a couch potato) and supported us in that decision. Their prices are the best in the area and I found so much solace in the fact that I got to know the surgeon who would be operating on our boy. I trusted them all with Bingley's life and even though it was scary leaving him there, I knew he was in the best hands. Bingley does not do well waking up from anesthesia so each time we had to pick up him up soon after he woke up. Before we got there they loved on him and tried to comfort him as best they could. Bingley struggled a bit (I did to) for the first few days after his surgery and they always answered my multiple phone calls a day with kindness, calm voices and a wealth of information and comforting advice. When Bingley needed his other knee done we called them to set it up without hesitation. For our consults and follow up visits we never had to wait and they always were super accommodating to our dog reactive dog. They always ensured the waiting room was empty and that he was put in a room right away. They went above and beyond each time we were there. Big River Vet will always be my first phone call if any of my dogs need surgery in the future and I cannot say enough good things about them. read more

We thought we were going to lose our 11 year old eskie last week, but after a prompt and successful surgery she is doing well and healing nicely. So happy my sister recommended Big River. Really zero stars just based on how they treated my father and my dog who needed to be assessed. They told my dad he was rude and that they did not want his business because he asked if they can do better than a 2 week out appt for an urgent situation. To make it even more unprofessional, they told him "and besides that you haven't been here in 8 years." As if that is necessary or matters at all. Beautiful. My dad was in complete shock at how he was treated. More than that, they denied a sick dog service for no reason. Better off though. Nothing has changed except our boys are older. We still love Dr Cardosa and staff. Our Dooney had ACL surgery just over two weeks ago and is doing great. I am so glad that he does his own surgery's and does not refer out to a unknown to us Dr. knowing our boy was with someone that loves him meant so much to us. read more

Would not recommend this vet to anyone. First visit was today, was rudely greeted by receptionist and told to put my one year old dog on the scale they had next to the front door. After waiting for a half hour for my dogs check up, the receptionist called my dog by his previous name, (changed name upon adoption). This may not matter to some, but it did bother me. Later on in the visit, I asked the doctor and receptionist about the change of color in my dogs tongue, websites say it could be caused by a disease...I got laughed at. They told me they had no idea what it was and said that he may have eaten something that changed his tongue a different color, I don't think so. Not happy with my first visit to this vet with my 1 year old puppy and will not be returning. read more

I brought my young pup to big river multiple times over the course of two months. I stated my concerns and I was told he was happy and healthy. A few months later my dog is no longer here. Since this experience, I have learned how to advocate for any pet and I know this is a vet I would not trust again. Long story short... Dr. Cardosa has been the best vet for all my family pets and my current pet. He was there when I lost both my previous pets and cared for them as puppy and kitten. Now he cares for my dog Zola. They just want your money. Before offering me any other alternatives for my cat's bladder stones they jumped right to surgery as the answer. And on top of that they do not verify the patients before performing surgery... due to work related events I had a family member drop off my cat on my behalf. They mistakenly dropped off the incorrect animal but yet the surgery was still performed anyways. Were there any stones to be removed? No, because it wasn't the same cat. The cat that had the surgery was a female and my cat is a male. They tried to cover it up saying my cat was always listed as female in their records but all my paperwork says male, and in the post-op voicemail they referred to my cat as "he" so they knew very well. I got a second opinion from a different vet and come to find out he didn't even have stones and doesn't need a surgery at all. THEY JUST WANT YOUR MONEY AND CLEARLY DONT PAY ATTENTION. read more

Everyone here is wonderful. I bring my malti-poo there regularly. I called one day after he had been bitten at a dog park. I was able to bring him right in and he was looked at immediately. Dr. Cardosa was very gentle and caring.
