The cheeseburger was incredible! Simple meat with pickles and onions but man it tasted great! The bartender was super friendly and we had a great conversation while we ate and rested up. Even the local folks sitting at the bar were friendly and chill. If you're tired, they have cheap rooms available to rent out but we had a long way to go so we didn't stay. That is until I had to room down in the Genoa Motel for a week while working at the Dairy land Power Cooperative power plant nearby. I must preface this by saying that the proprietor and manager is a very nice older gentlemen by the name of James. I found his service and demeanor to be very welcoming and never had an issue with him at all. Rather it was the shabby quarters he offered for the week that I have to take some issues with. The room had no dresser what so ever. Just two desks instead? Weird. The comforters had holes in them, the towels were old, and few and far between. The fridge that came with the place was alright, until I opened it up and found that the last guest had left old sausage and cheese in there. It had already begun to grow a thick crust of mold and had clearly been in there for at least a two weeks. The bathroom had one toilet, one rickety stand in shower and one sink no more no less. The toilet over flooded twice while I was there. The hot water ran out in like five minutes. The "cable TV." was basic cable with no decent channels on it(i.e. no skin flick channels). The base board heater was far to small to heat the entire room at night. A stale pot of coffee. Add to this the fact that there was some creepy extra chromosome having' lady who worked there and weirded me the fvck out. It was quite possibly the worst hotel I've had the displeasure of staying in. Shame on you Genoa motel. Then again what can one expect from a $99 a week motel? I guess the shame is more on yours truly

From the outside, it more or less just looks like an old building. Inside, it's kind of like stepping back in time, to the days when folks built nice hotels with lots of cool architectural details and craftsmanship. But it's actually better than that, because modern amenities like air conditioning that works well are found in today's Winneshiek. Pro Tip - if your room is too warm, ask at the front desk for them to adjust the temperature. They can do a lot more from there than you can in your room, where you only have +/- 3 degrees of control.

The place looked so inviting. The first things I noticed were a sand volleyball game going on, ladies out riding bikes around the trail in front of the resort, a caregiver and child out for a walk on the trail, a fun giant chessboard game on the yard, beautiful well kept cabins, well maintained grounds, and very organized area stocked with bikes, kayaks, tubes, and supplies while riding up to the convenience store and office. Attention had been paid to every detail from signage, to landscaping displays, and definitely to the training and choosing of staff. Every member of staff that we spoke with treated the resort as if they were the owner and we were their most important client. That kind of hospitality training is hard to come by and rarely seen. This place is a gem and the offerings that go along with it are breathtaking. Scenery for nature lovers, photography, birding, and artist refuge for painting. Trails for biking, hiking, and snowmobiles. Water activities whether floating, kayaking or fishing. Within blocks or a few miles of museums for history buffs and a block away from world famous homemade pie that is absolutely delightful. There is absolutely something for every person of any age. Then to absolutely top it off, Lucas, from the convenience store office after hours delivered our keys to us at our campground that we inadvertently left when we stopped on our way back to our campground in neighboring town. With staff that goes above and beyond like that for people who they met for 10 minutes and remember them from the numbers of people who come through every day is astounding ... Well done Lucas, your generosity and kindness moved your 5 star resort to an over the top resort that has no competition. You have a loyal fan base that is willing to spread the word far and wide.

Checking in I had to wait for someone to come to the hotel to check me in. My 1st night I had to be moved because of bedbugs and bedbugs bits. Even told the owner she could contact the last hotel I stayed at to confirm no bed bug issues. Getting up the driveway after it snows is a joke especially when it hasn't been plowed at all and the owners had the nerve to ask me if the tires on my car were good. Yes they are good she said her husband would be back to plow before morning when Im just getting off work and lay some sand down and it never happend. Took me 3 tries to get up the hill because it hadn't been plowed.
