We were in town and checked the yelp app and Big Oak was nearby and had great reviews. I asked our business partners about it and they said they order from here regularly. Our experience was great: we both had terrific sandwiches packed full of ingredients. My reuben was delicious. Our sandwiches came in a real paper bag with my name on it. Inside were carefully wrapped a d well-prepared sandwiches with a pickle and a small bag of chips. I also got a small salad and, thr best part of the meal, was a prepackaged slice of carot cake with nuts. We went in yesterday (Monday..the day after mother's day). I want to start off by saying that every single table in the front portion of the cafe was DIRTY! They open at 6am we got there at 7am..and it wasnt busy and it was still dirty. (Crumbs, oil, some sort of liquids..just dirty). We ordered an espresso and a medium roast coffee at first. The espresso was awful..like gross. The beans were not freshly ground it was horribly bitter. The medium roast coffee was the best DINER quality coffee I've had. But that's it..dinner quality. Do not get your hopes up for good quality coffee at Big Oak. The two older women in the front had no idea what they were doing basically..a younger girl came to check us out since the lady looked at us and was like.."I'll be back and scurried off to the bathroom" leaving the front unattended. I don't want to go on and say this is a LGBTQ or Trans safe place because as soon as I opened my mouth I got foul looks from 2 different fellas that were waiting for their food. But they DO have gender neutral bathrooms in the cafe. So that's something. The food looked good. Also at a fair price. I will say..the sweet tea..HOLY CRAP..amazing!! The tea is big oak cafes nitch. They sell half gallons to go...so I got one. It's amazing. The only reason we will be going back if/when we are in the area is for the sweet tea. Definitely try some if you're in the area. Loyalty Program. Inexpensive. Quick service. Fresh options. I like this place :) I ordered the Ranchero on an everything bagel after someone recommended that and thought it was good. I chuckled at the "salsa" as the "salsa" was just chopped tomatoes and peppers. I guess that's my only complaint about the sandwiches - they are pretty dry. Tasty, but dry. There is plenty of seating both indoors and outdoors. The breakfast options are on the paper menu at the front desk so don't miss out if they are not posted on the chalkboards. This place is next door to butcher stop. Maybe next time before you go food shopping, stop here first, treat yourself, then go food shopping. You'd probably save money in the long run if you eat before grocery shopping so you don't buy things you don't need ;-) read more

We, my sister and brother in law, were traveling to South Carolina for my brothers 75th birthday. We had a hotel room in Chambersburg. We selected this cafe from the internet. When we arrived there was a couple at the counter. I am not sure what was going on but it took at least 15 minutes for that transaction to end. We finally got a chance to order. I wanted the french onion soup and was offered to have it as a side instead of one of the normal ones. The sandwich was $8.75. The order came to over $14. I did not think of it until I stepped away but I was surprised with the total amount. I went back and asked how much the soup alone cost. I was told $4.25. Which meant I was charged the full amount for the soup and deprived of a side. When I mentioned that to her and told her I wanted the fruit salad. She looked at me and said that was not the way it happened and I could not have it. That is just wrong. My sister and brother in law got their food. Then people who ordered after me were getting their food. I went to the counter and asked where my food was. My family had finished their food. I got another 'look' an 'oh yeah' and my food. Nothing about this experience was good. I recommend that you avoid this place. read more

A couple of us church volunteers came in for lunch to discuss out annual meeting and of course enjoy a light lunch all of us had ordered our lunch I just ordered a bowl of crab soup. Everyone in my group had gotten their food and had finished halfway, while I was still awaiting my buzzer to go off. 30 min. Later I approached the ladies in the front to inquire about my order. And they pointed out that it's waiting there on the side. But my buzzer never buzzed. I was so upset because of the rude response and service. My soup ended up cold and will never return again. Nice lunch from a local spot, Big Oak sits inside the Butcher Shop market. I opted for the special of the day and was maybe a little overwhelmed by the choices. Sides, drinks, eat in or take away, where are we sitting, just a lot to process for a hungry boy! The barbecue beef sandwich was sort of a Sloppy Joe but not quite so sloppy. Tasty, yes. The potato salad on the side was good and the chips were nice and crispy. Coffee? Excellent! It's a nice spot for a good lunch and it looked like a good spot for laptop work, too! read more

While on a trip up north to visit family, we visited The Big Oak Cafe, part of the local Butcher Shoppe, and we were blown away. First off, sitting outside under the awning, with a light breeze blowing while waiting for our order was great. I tried their mango ice tea, which was very refreshing and not sickly-sweet. The breakfast bagel was excellent too, and very beautifully presented. Our treat was the chocolate fondue. My, oh my. There was a breeze, so the candle wouldn't stay lit, but the chocolate stayed in its melted deliciousness the duration of the meal. Cheesecake bits, brownies, angel cake, gummy bears, and an assortment of fruits garnished the dish, and the amount could very easily be shared with 4 people, versus the recommended two. Bakery items, breakfast, lunch dinner salads sandwiches and catering. They even have gluten free items if you ask, and almond milk. Fast friendly service- order at the counter and they give you a buzzer. Two rooms to choose variery of seats: some easy chairs, booths, tables chairs, high-tops with barstools. Ended up at the Big Oak rather late over one particular Saturday evening. There was two of us, and though my mother received her order ( which i ordered first: 1/2 option: salad and Onion Soup) which i did not receive mine. I went up and asked, the girl who took my order said " they didn't tell me they were out of soup and gave me my money back and gave me my salad. I sat down and started to eat.. the girl who took the order said " we are closing soon but can eat outside " it was cool out and opt to finish up inside. a few minutes later we were approached again by an employee saying " its 6 minutes after closing time we can eat outside. It did look like the people in the back were pretty much cleaning up, the tables around me where people sat before i arrived were not wiped up and the trash under the place where the plastic ware was located was overflowing. as well. The salad was good, really liked the sesame dressing, and the portion of veggies was large meaning the spinach was about 1/2 of the size of my palm. I've been many times and I enjoy it every time I go. The employees are friendly, but most often understaffed. I love all the different food options and variety of drinks compared to other cafes and places. It's a great place to go with a few friends to chat. So I'm all for supporting local businesses and this place is pretty great. Good selections for vegetarians, cheap for a half sandwich, nice quality bread, and fluffy looking baked goods. I got a strawberry, cheddar, spinach honey mustard sammie on whole wheat. My girlfriend got a yummy pizza bagel. The macaroni salad was unique and tasty. The coffee is super cheap and pretty tasty. They support a couple nice causes and encourage using your own container which is a nice feature. Service was a little slow but that's the price you pay for local spots that don't microwave the food. For all you/us out-of-towners, the Big Oak is the café/restaurant attached to The Butcher Shoppe. Seating: Booths, tables for two, tables for several, and a few tall chairs at a counter. There is way more seating than is immediately visible when you come in through the front, i.e., by the counter where you place your order. The whole place is shaped like a rectangle with a bottleneck in the middle by the restroom (a unisex, one-at-a-time affair), so head away from the counter for the rest of the seating. If you come in through the back, i.e., through Ye Olde Butcher Shoppe, you'll already be passing through this seating area on your way to place your order. If you're a laptopper I'd definitely recommend you prepare yourself to be overwhelmed by the lunch crowd. The place was packed to the point that people had started to hover, waiting for tables. After you order you get a number and wait for the food to find you. We were told that our drinks might be be ready first and that if we heard them shouting our number we could come get them; however, in this case the drinks were delivered to us (before the sandwiches). The person who took our order was friendly and helpful, and our order came out quickly enough considering it was the middle of lunch chaos. They offer lots of sandwiches with odd names, fully described in the menu (print and online). I hear the "Meadow" wrap is super, especially the dressing on the greens. If you want to name the ingredients in your sandwich, ask for a "Standard." My Standard was a good, solid sandwich, not too big and not too small--though in Chambersburg I might have expected more for the price ($6.95). But the times, I hear, they are a-changin', even in Chambersburg, and to be fair the sandwich I ordered -- roast beef, swiss, lettuce, tomato, and mustard on pumpernickel since they were out of or don't carry rye -- was not nearly as fancy as the ones suggested on their menu which might be more worth the price. The Baked Potato soup: it's like they turned a baked potato into a soup. It's creamy and heavy, and it even has bits of bacon. Try the mango-orange-juice iced tea, which is very/too sweet -- though I think it would make a great Thai-(ish)-style iced tea. Next time I'll add some half and half from the coffee bar. read more

Sort of stale coffee sitting in those large thermoses all day. It's a bit livelier than On What Ground on Lincoln, but it has a chain feel to it. Nothing interesting going on here. They don't bake their own goods, which would be fine if they sourced from somewhere good; however, I must comment on the chocolate chip cookie that I purchased. I think someone is really taking the word chip a bit too literally, go ahead, add more than one (see picture). If you're feeling really chipper, you might go for three! read more

My mom and I enjoy coming to the Big Oak Cafe for lunch sometimes. But beware, it gets very busy from about 11:30 to 12:30! The Big Oak Cafe is attached to the Butcher Shoppe. The big parking lot out front will fill up, both establishments do quite a business. The menu at the Big Oak Cafe features a lot of sandwiches or wraps. Cute and clever names with a description of everything that's on it. You can get a half or a whole. You can also choose a side with your sandwich. If you like potato salad, I highly recommend that as it is divine. They make it on-site and it is so very good. They also serve some breakfast items now, and they're served all day. I've tried a breakfast sandwich and it's wonderful. Ingredients used are always so fresh and lovely. Fruits and veggies are fresh, crisp, and flavorful. They really care about what they use in their foods. The coffee at the Big Oak Cafe is quite tasty, too. You can get a real mug if you're dining in, or several sizes of to-go cups. They will punch a leaf in the paper sleeve of the cups which you can re-use and keep getting it punched, which eventually earns you a free coffee. For those with a sweet tooth, beware, their sugary delights are awesome! They bake it all right there and only use high quality ingredients. We asked them once if they use high fructose corn syrup in anything, and they said no. No baked goods contain that ingredient. The Cafe is a moderate size, with booths and tables. It can get pretty crowded in there. It's warm and inviting with dark colors. It's a great place for lunch with friends or a family member, or even a business lunch. You order your food and beverages at the counter, pay, and they hand you a number to place on your table. Food is brought to you when it's ready. The service has ALWAYS been great. The staff is super friendly, patient, helpful, and always have a smile. Employees must be treated well to always be that pleasant. I'm a big fan of the Big Oak Cafe. Whether it's just for coffee or it's for lunch, I highly recommend it. read more
