Error messages popping up on my screen that they refused to even look at

I was assaulted, belittled, and harassed. By the manager. A common theme in the reviews. I paid $598 on 4/23/2026 for 2 uniroyal tires, alignment, and a warranty package. The shop violated the agreement by leaving my vehicle unsecured with the key fob on a public street, after explicitly confirming they would not drive it off the property I politely pointed this out and kept saying let's move on just let me pay. They kept getting more and more irate, shouting in my face " you making a big deal out of it " and I kept calmly saying let's just move on? When I returned to address an incomplete service (TPMS not reset, lug nuts not mine, visible weights glued crooked on premium wheels) staff verbally abused me, followed me to my car, kicked my feet, blocked me in, and knocked on my windows until i pulled my phone out to record. They taunted me to roll my windows down, called my vehicle a "piece of sh**", etc I was unable to safely return to use the warranty services included in my purchase. The aggressor identified himself as the manager. Reading these reviews it seems to be a repeat pattern. I filed a police report credit card dispute and will pursue through small claims and also notify the bureau of automotive repair, BBB, corporate office, etc.

I had to share my experience after a second failure from an improper shock installation. I hope Big O management reads this honest and factual review. In 2018, Big O on Geary Street installed a new set of Rancho shocks on my truck. The Rancho shocks have a lifetime warranty. I gave Big O an excellent review back in 2018. In 2024, the Big O manager, Will, assisted me with a warranty replacement of all four shocks due to defective rubber bushings, paying for labor and realignment. Happy return customer at this point. Here's where things went wrong. The Big O mechanic who installed the replacement shocks didn't torque the front control arm nuts and bolts back to spec and my driver side front end came loose a week later and I lost control of the truck while driving. Couldn't steer the truck safely at any speed. Fortunately, this front control arm failed on a City street rather than on the Freeway with my son during our camping trip that week. It would have been catastrophic at freeway speeds or on a mountain road! I brought the truck in immediately and was charged the $125 "inspection fee" even after the mechanic and manager admittedly reinstalled and retorqued the loose control arm bolts that were improperly installed. The manager should have waived the "inspection fee" since this was a Big O mechanics fault, but I was just happy to get my truck rolling after a four hour wait and didn't push the issue at the time. Fast forward June 13, 2025. My driver's side rear shock broke free from the top mount bolt while driving. I heard a bang, which was the shock popping out from the chassis mount. On further inspection, I found the rear shock hanging by the lower bolt arm. Also, I checked the upper mount nut torque on the passenger side rear shock and was able to spin it freely by hand! From my understanding, the top nut should be torqued to 15 ft/lbs. Wasn't even close! I discussed this shock failure with another tire specialist shop and they pointed to improper installation torque settings. Although the front office and staff are professional, polite and they probably have many happy customers, I'm no longer one after two mechanical failures from a routine shock installation. If any positive comes from publicly revealing my experience, Big O needs to verify their mechanics do the proper installation steps and not disregard proper torque settings. The head manager's line, "it happens sometimes" is not acceptable when a control arm fails due to an inadequate shock installation. 100% NOT SAFE. Therefore, Big O will never touch my truck again. I personally don't trust this shop to keep my vehicles safely maintained on the road.

Ask the Community - Big O Tires

Hi, who's the owner now? Is it still Chuck B? I was a tech there back in late 1990's. Tech #91.…

Yup, Chris Monteverde. Carful, he's a bit of a crook and lacks integrity in my experience. Had to sue these guys and it was a long, painful experience. Ended up winning the full $7,800, but was without a car for 4 months while my engine was being… Read more

The person at the desk said they're completely busy and cannot get to me, even with an appointment. No one bothered to called me to cancel. As a result, I had to drive back on my flat. If they had done the courtesy of even notifying me that they would be too busy, I could have easily found another place that day.

Gotta love dealerships…read more... They'll rip you a new one when it comes to repairs esp with European cars. I found Atech on Yelp and used their project feature to request a quote. It also sent requests out to a few other shops, tho that part is always random, and not all of them were even close to me. Anyhow, Alex the owner responded in minutes and gave the most reasonable quote to change my BMW front brakes using OEM pads. I dropped my car off in the morning (they were working on several European cars), and it was ready by early afternoon, just as promised. Alex was honest, transparent, explained things in layman's terms, and made me comfortable as a woman who doesn't know cars. Just a heads up, in case you want to get some work done while you wait, there isn't a waiting room...just several lawn chairs near the entrance. But hey, it helps keep their overhead low, and those savings get passed on to customers!

Doesn't matter if it's a weird noise, a dead battery, or some mystery check-engine light that's been haunting you for months--he'll dig in, explain everything in plain English, and fix it without upselling you junk. Last week my alternator quit mid-commute. I rolled in stressed, no appointment, and Alex just said, "We got you," popped the hood, and had me back on the road same day. No drama, no fake urgency--just solid work and a fair price. If you want a shop that treats you like family (not a paycheck), this is it. Alex runs the place like he owns your car too. Highly recommend.

It makes sense as a business model, but they will make you feel BAD about your car after you leave, even if you don't notice anything wrong with it. This place is the CLASSIC spend $250 on an oil change and come out with a $2,500 job to fix things in your car you didn't realize or doesn't need fixing. The owner tried to recreate the problem with hard braking multiple times over a short distance (like a semi-auto machine gun), but really couldn't. Luckily I don't brake that way, and nobody else does either. Technician was nice, front desk woman is usually grouchy with a "matter of fact, can't be bothered attitude." But it is what it is. It's too bad because I come here to support local businesses, but I've always felt off after spending money here. More context for why I feel there's always an upsell given Stan, the owner responded to my comment. * I came years ago for tires and was told I needed to change some random part. And then I took my car to my regular service place that doesn't do tires and they said the part was OK. I'm going to do the same and go to my regular mechanic and ask about my crow bars when they do the Service and report back. UPDATE: I got my service done at my mechanic and they said the suspension was fine! * When I asked whether Sunset Service do an oil change and service, they said "yes." So I asked them to tell me how much, which they couldn't until after they started working on swapping on my tires. No problem. They called 40 minutes later and first quoted $220, then said it was a misquote b/c they only had 6 quarts included instead of the 8 quarters my car needed. Fine, so then they said $260 with Castrol synthetic. They then pushed this product called Liqui Moly which is supposed to be a premium product out of Germany. That sounds good, but I have a 10 1/2 year-old car and no need for the fancy stuff for an extra $20 - $30 more. The normal Castro synthetic motor oil was fine. Then I asked whether they could pour an unopened bottle of Bar's Leak to help minimize a slight engine oil leak when they do the oil change. They said they could not due to Warranty Reasons. Really? Fine, even though it is an established product and just an oil change. But they did say that if I go with their Liqui Moly oil, which is at least $20 - $30 more expensive, they could add the Liqui Moly version engine oil leak product for another $27. Of course they could, especially when the product I bought cost only $7. This is obviously a smart upsell, which I ended up declining altogether because they wouldn't add my bottle. I'll just do it myself. It's too bad because I would have gladly paid the $260 or so to do the oil change and service to save time, even thought the quote was $20+ more expensive than my regular shop. So when I finally picked up my car with two new tires, I was surprised that Stan came out strong and said I have a knocking sound and need to change my control bars, even though he could not replicate the sound consistently or at all, even with his unnatural staccato hard breaking. Further, I have never heard of this knocking sound he mentioned. The cost to diagnose he mentioned was $200 (!), and then another $80-$120 for something else that would go towards fixing the car, and then potentially $2000 or more for new control bars. Wow. There was no patient explanation on something I clearly was surprised about. Then there was what aggressive questioning of where I get my car maintained, implying they were negligent, and I told him where. I also told him I'm getting a service done next month as I'm meticulous about maintaining the car and this is the first time I've heard of the problem he identified. Then he said I should get the big 100,000 mile service even though I only have 67,500 miles. Fair enough, but not at Sunset Service. So this is where I'm coming from in terms of feeling like I'm always getting upsold. How would you feel? I'm glad Stan took the time to respond. Customers like me are at the "top of the funnel," leads that could generate more business. However, I feel there is a better, more patient, and empathetic way to upsell to generate more business. I will stick to my regular mechanic for service whenever the light goes on. Sunset Service gets the job done for my multiple tire replacements. They have competitive pricing and they got it done within 1.5 hours vs 1 hour estimate. Everything else, I'm not so sure.
