They charged her over $700 to replace the REAR shocks and struts! They did not need replaced as they told her both front and back needed replaced and wanted another $3200 for the front!! She has a special needs son she transports in that truck and is not married so I am absolutely furious that they did this to a young female!!!! She went in for an oil change!!!! I went into Big O in Altoona, IA just to do an oil change and get just a general check on my car about a week ago. While I was there Brandon the front desk guy tried to upsell everyone everything (I noticed as I was sitting in the lobby). While my car was getting worked on, they "took a look at my cabin filter" and said mine was really dirty. Brandon said " 'Full transparency' here is your filter" and proceeds to show me a dirty filter to try to get me to buy a new one and also get the service done on it. I believed them, but I figured I could just do it myself. So now, today rolls around and I go to change the filter. Turns out, MY ACTUAL FILTER, is way dirtier than the one they showed me. Mine had a mouse living in it apparently (see photo). These people are showing you a dirty filter they have on hand to try to upsell you. Cause that filter they showed me at the shop DEFINITELY was not the same one. Now I'm concerned if they actually did the work they promised i.e. oil change, tire rotation, fluids topped off. Big O Tires - Nasty cabin filter with deceased mouse and nest - Tires Near Me - Altoona, Iowa

Tonight around 5:15 pm I was headed to Walmart to pick up a few things. I turned from Hubbell Avenue onto 8th St. SW in Altoona, Iowa. As soon as I started to straighten my wheels out, I hit this giant pothole in the road. As I turned into Walmart parking lot and got my wheelchair unloaded off the ramp on the back of my van, I noticed my back passenger tire was completely flat. My son came with his portable air compressor, but it would not even blow it up because it was leaking as much air as it was taking in. My tires were all Big O so I called them to ask how late they were open. They informed me 6 o'clock. I explained to Brian on the phone of the situation that I was in and he asked to put me on hold for a few minutes and came back to tell me that he would send an employee over to Walmart to assist. Matthias came and jacked my van up, took the tire off and headed back to Big O to repair it with my son riding with him. Unfortunately, the tire was not repairable so he found a comparable tire and brought it back to Walmart's parking lot and put it back on my van. By the time everything was done, it was 6:15 pm and he still had to take the jack and impact wrench back to Big O. Awful service. Purchased 4 new big o brand tires and had to go back on 5 different occasions for the tires going flat. Turns out they fired a guy for not knowing what he was doing, but not until he ruined 2 of our rims. After asking for a refund on the tires and replacement rims the manager replies, prove it was us. The absolute worst place to get any service done whatsoever. I wouldn't trust these guys to fix a tricycle. Tried to charge me 60 dollars to open my hood up for half an hour after they did nothing. When i went to inquire about it i was thrown to the next employee who acted like a grown twelve year old to be quite honest and whose attitude I couldn't even believe, he grew the guts to get snappy with me after id been nothing but respectful and understanding. I don't know a lick about vehicles. Thats why i was there. But i know everything there is to know about honorable rates. Do not trust these people. Zero stars. After they damaged both rocker panels on my van caused by improper hoisting they would not respond to me after promises that the manager would call. If you are desperate enough to risk them damaging your vehicle Do Not allow them to lift your car with blocks of wood under the lower body panels. Lifting should always be accomplished by lifting the frame of the vehicle. I filed a BBB complaint. They did not respond to repeated requests from them either. To this day I have never received a call back from anyone from this exceptionally poor service establishment. In my experience this is not an honorable business. Go down the street to Discount Tire. D Don't learn the hard way like I did. If they crush your rocker panels like they did on my Chevy Venture its on you for not listening. read more

They are so lazy they didn't put my jack back where it belonged they hide it under the carpet. They also did not tighten my two back tires all the way. I would never recommend taking your car into them. They tried to tell my my senses for my tires were not sensing my tire pressure anymore. When though it worked just fine before I went in. On 11/4/2017, we were driving on 65 N when the battery light started flashing on and off. Got to the Altoona exit, when the dash went dead. Barely got the car around the corner, when the vehicle died. I figured the alternator was bad, and so we called Big O Tires to see if the did alternators. Yes was the response and we explained our situation. Within 10 minutes, the sent one of their employees over to out location. They gave us a jump, and then followed us to their location. We were treated very nice! They went out and checked to determine if it really was the alternator vs the battery and gave us an estimate. Unfortunately that vehicle required more than what the felt comfortable doing, and explained it. I really appreciate the honesty and the explanation, instead of the brush off you get at other shops. (We had a Mercury Mariner, and the alternator repair involved the transfer case, and the location of the alternator on that vehicle has limited access without having to dismantle that area of the vehicle. With age of vehicle, and ultimate cost of repair, we decided to not have it done and sold vehicle.) read more

Would not recommend. I went in to get my A/C fixed and to get an oil change. I sat for at least an hour and a half before someone came out (which I had expected that wait for my service, which was a $198 estimation as well). I then am told that my compressor and a few other things need replaced and that it'd be $2,000. I can't afford this and say I won't be doing that today (which again, not upset and not their fault) but then I'm told I would be expected to pay close to $70 for them just taking a look at my A/C (that's with a coupon I might add)... Which is a ridiculous price considering it is almost 1/2 of what the full A/C service would've cost and they took the same amount of time to look at my A/C as it would've to actually fix my AC. I received an oil that is only going to last 3,000 miles and wasn't given any sort of receipt or list of what I paid for exactly. After asking I was just sent to the next person and treated like no one wanted to deal with me or my questions. In all I spent $90 for 3,000 miles, no AC, and bad service. read more

Daughter purchased new tires on 10/5/20 but didn't purchase protection plan. Blow out on side wall 50 miles later on 10/8/20. Obvious defect in tire. Big O would not stand behind defective tire. Made her purchase a new one. They can install defective tires on vehicles for customers who do not purchase plans then sell more tires. Absolutely ridiculous. My wife and I would like to praise the staff at the Altoona, IA store for being extremely helpful, friendly, and professional. We were on the road going to Ohio from Nevada and noticed a tire going flat on the trailer we were pulling. We arrived at the Store and explained our predicament and immediately the staff went into action and solved the problem. The manager offered his personal vehicle, so we could get some breakfast while we waited. We are truly thankful for the service we received that was above and beyond expectations. read more

I'm reviewing this for a friend. Some friends of mine needed a set of 4 tires for their Ford expedition. The wife calls around looking for prices. When she called Big 'O' in Altoona, She gave them the correct numbers and said she liked "duellers" before. She was told to have her husband call because "there are alot of different tires to choose from" Needless to say, SHE bought her tires somewhere else, and the husband had nothing to do with the transaction. I was driving from MN to AZ and hearing a clucking noise from my rear. I noticed that there were cars parked at Big O Tire in Ankeny even though it was after hours. They were having a company meeting and after explaining my dilemma to the manager of Altoona location, they opened the garage and hoisted my car on the lift. Went in there to get my free alignment, and they broke my tie rod, then lied about it, and now aren't gonna pay for it, i don't recommend them at all! Recently my husband got a flat tire on the interstate. He was 20 miles from home. He had a spare tire that needed mounted. He called Big O in Altoona and talked to Shawn. The store was closing in 10 minutes, but Shawn said they would stay open until I got there with the spare tire. Who does that anymore?! He said it wasn't a problem and no one needs to be left stranded with a flat tire!! When I got there, Shawn was super friendly and polite. The store was very clean and decorated with tires and flags and lights. It was obvious that Shawn takes a lot of pride in his job and his work because it showed in how he operated the store. You can just tell he is a genuine guy and you can trust him. They were also very quick and efficient. We were in and out in no time at all. Never once smiled, never helped a customer when I was there besides when forced to because Shawn was busy, btw he rocks. The worst retail experience I have ever ever had. First they gave us a bad tire, it had a bulge in the side wall. Super unsafe to drive on. The car shook so bad, you couldn't go over 30 mph. After two weeks of them saying it will be in tomorrow they finally had to put a tire on that was the wrong size, while we waited and waited and waited for over two months for tomorrow to come again to get the correct size tire. All this while my son driving unsafe. Finally the district manager, Galen, calls us, he is sorry and wants to make it right, he says He found a tire and he told us the date it would be in. He told us he was going to give my son his money back, which made sense, they should of. After we finally got the right tire put on, I called the district manager to let him know my son would be stopping in to get his refund. I was talked to so terribly, I cannot even repeat here all the things he said to me. He called me a liar. He asked if I just went around town and tried to get things for free. He said he had no record of my sons transaction, he said there was no proof my son had ever paid for anything. He said there was no invoice, there is one, and I have my copy. He denied that they put a bad tire on in the first place! He said that never happened and I was a liar. He said he never promised the money back, but he did. This is the district manager!
