I have been to my fair share of rescue shelters in northern and southern CA, and BDR is hands down the most beautiful and pleasant experience I have had. Petaluma Animal Services recommended BDR to me with high praise. I had such a good feeling the first time my sisters and I visited that we have been volunteering for 6 months now. This rescue has no required limit of days you need to volunteer as many others do, which actually makes me want to come in more. We come and go as we please. Sometimes I spend hours just socializing and cuddling the dogs! I always leave feeling great and joke that it is free therapy. I believe the dogs here are genuinely as happy as they can be in their "in between" situation. They have room to run, sun bathe, go on tree-lined walks, and get lots of fresh air. The rescue has amazing trainers that come in to work with the dogs until they find their people. It is clear the women that run BDR have a serious love and compassion for animals, and they have dedicated their lives to it. My fiance and I ended up falling in love and bringing home two BDR dogs. We have had such a great experience (and talk about it so often) that 3 additional dogs have been adopted out into our family, and I'm sure there will be more because we can't give enough praise. They also give a really lovely "doggy gift bag" to take home with you.

    Our baby girl "Domino".

She…read moreworks with most of the other local shelters/rescues in the area to save small dogs of all ages and conditions....as she has space available. I have known Odessa for years and have so much respect for her incredible personal commitment to dog rescue. Most of the dogs 'roam' freely in her house, learning to get along with other dogs and with people. Puppies (and moms) stay in the puppy palace (a charmingly converted and furnished garage space). Rescuing and adopting dogs is very hard and very expensive work, since many dogs who were neglected or abused require a lot of love, medical care, and training. Please take any 'negative' reviews with a big grain of salt. All of us who have to deal with the public understand how unreasonable and uncharitable some people can be. This is a truly extraordinary woman who makes great sacrifices to rescue and place dogs in the best possible homes. It's an uphill battle with so many people allowing their dogs to breed and dumping them on rescue. And with some adopters/lookers who can be disrespectful of the process around placing dogs. Very few of us could do this work day in and day out with no reward other than seeing dogs go to the right guardians. Thank you to everyone who supports and adopts from rescue, saves lives, and appreciates those doing the really hard work. And please consider fostering a little dog if you can. It's a rewarding experience being part of the pipeline to forever homes.

It is in a private individual's home who has opened her lovely house to the public as a library of books centering women writers. The whole place was extremely charming and well organized, with various rooms representing different collections such as poetry, the performing arts, an entire section dedicated to books by and about Virginia Woolf, a beautiful altar setup to Maya Angelou and her books, complete with a powerful quote of hers on the wall, several bookcases of publications by lesbian writers which were built "into a closet," funnily enough, and a whole room dedicated to the obituaries of noteworthy women. This place is a vast archive of relevant materials all focused on women authors and thinkers. The grounds, including the back and front yards, are beautified by numerous standing redwoods towering over the house. It created a very welcoming sanctuary that made you really want to sit there and browse and read for hours. All of this is dedicated to women writers. J.J. Wilson and her staff of enthusiastic volunteers are to be highly credited and praised for giving this unique and beautiful gift to our community. Such a rich and exciting dwelling place, and community center for us all to enjoy! I highly recommend you visit! Go check it out, and set aside a few hours for browsing and sampling, like a visit to a bakery for those of us who love to read.

There is a little kitchen too so you can serve some snacks to your group. I found this place because I was invited to an event for the women who work at Sonoma State. We had a lovely time, sipping wine and eating snacks, relaxing in the garden. I found a book on my way out, and one of the volunteers was happy to chat with me about it and let me take it right away. Can you believe it?? This is truly a spot for book lovers. They just let you take books -- no membership card, no due dates, just readers creating a space for each other. It is a really quaint and relaxing place. I can't believe more people don't know about it!
