The thing about Glacier is that nearly all surrounding businesses are owned by a company called Pursuit which brings in about 75% young international workers who can't drive on their J-1 visas. Because they can't drive, they're captive to the area they live in, oftentimes in very poor living conditions. Because of this, they act somewhat like zombies who are homesick and incapable of providing a home-like atmosphere. Places like Glacier's Edge stand out because they're locally owned--and the quality is so much better for it. Bathrooms were also clean.

Glacier NP summer trip: We stayed 2 nights at the Mountain Pine Hotel in East Glacier area and just…read morea few walking distance was this little area of 2 food trucks. We decided to try Island Thyme Food truck. First, the colors attracted me and the owner of the food truck was very welcoming and explained the menu for us to consider. Because it was hot, I wanted something light and refreshing so I ordered the rainbow bowl. Delicious! Quinoa at the bottom of the bowl, and topped with black beans, sliced purple cabbages, small pieces of sweet potatoes, salads, carrots, and sweet Thai chili sauce. Overall just a refreshing delicious bowl of yumminess. I love the sweet Thai chili sauce to give a sweet and tangy taste. Again, I'm a huge fan of food trucks and food stalls and this was a great food experience! Relaxing hang out place with friendly folks (I'm pretty sure most are visitors as well staying at hotels nearby), picnic shaded tables...what else can you ask for? If we're ever back in the area again, we'll definitely try other menus!

This restaurant was recommended to us by our guide on a boat tour at St. Mary Lake in Glacier…read moreNational Park. She made mention that it was locally owned, AND it was the only one of the 3 restaurants she named which was open before 4pm, which is when we were there, so we trekked on over. We arrived behind a large party of about 8 people and were the only other table in the restaurant. They - or should I say he - took our order quickly and were willing to accommodate a special request (to have a breakfast dish after their stated cutoff time due to a wheat allergy; almost everything on the lunch menu is breaded/fried, so I couldn't eat it). It was clearly Native-owned, which I was happy to support. However, the poor guy who took our order was the only one in the place. He was doing everything: stocking, cleaning, taking orders, cooking. We were there for nearly an hour when the other party's food came out. By this point, we had figured out that he was flying solo, so we were sort of hoping our food would come out at the same time. It didn't. We asked if ours had been started yet, and it hadn't. Seeing that we were staying 3 hours from the park, we had to leave to meet up with our family without having any lunch. This could easily have been avoided with a little communication from the get-go: "Hey, a large party just came in ahead of you. Just so you know, it's probably going to be an hour or more before you see any food." We would have left then and had time to get lunch before starting our drive back to Augusta. As it was, we paid for our 1 drink, made do with whatever snacks we had, and hit the road. Can't comment on the food and the guy was super nice, so I hate to leave a not-great review, but I can't imagine what would have happened if 2 or more of the parties from our boat ride had arrived at the same time we had. I think a little work on the staffing side would do wonders.
