Our club went out yesterday Monday for salmon. Recreational salmon fishing opened the first time in three years. A total of ten were caught. The captain and crew of two were on it. Anytime a salmon was hooked the crew was diligent in the attempt to keep it on the line and to bring it in. 80% success rate. It was a full day. The Outer Limits left at 5am returning at 4pm. Docked at Sausalito boat harbor. We drove over from the City. Most parking spots were already occupied when we arrived at 4:30am. Of course my salmon got away. But I took home a blue rock cod. read more

This is my 2nd time on the boat and while I had a good time, because I was with my baby and my sister, and it was a beautiful day, and we caught a butt-ton of salmon, it will also be my last. I was with someone who, for the last 4 years, has been organizing an annual charter for friends and coworkers. She fills the whole boat! You'd think that would earn her at least a, "hi, good to see you again." The mood was completely different this year. So I was unsurprised to see other reviewers saying that things had changed. It was not a happy boat. I'm wondering if they get enough crusty old regulars that they no longer need to molly-coddle tourists or newbies and are instead abrasive and dismissive of them. This was especially irritating for those who AREN'T newbies or tourists but were assumed to be. I'm no expert but I've done other charters before. At one point my line began to play out a little and I wasn't sure if I had a fish and I was just feeling the line to see if there was any twitching. The deck hand rushed up and chewed me out because he thought I was playing out the line. I didn't even respond to him because there was no point (,that's what Yelp's for). Like the other reviewer says, "if I want to get yelled at, I'll go to work." There was a real, "just back off dummies and let us do it for you because you're just getting in our damn way" attitude and I understand they're working very hard to help land the fish but it really did become, "why are we even doing this? They obviously don't want us here." I will tell you the plus sides. Captain Jim really knows how to handle a boat and put it on the fish. And the deckhands really know what they're doing as well. They're very competent all around and it's a great boat and well-cared for. But why do they have to be dicks? We had one issue that might explain the sour attitude, which was that every year my friend's organized a trip, they filled the whole boat and were told to be there by 6am. This time there were only 6 of us and the rest were other folks. We were on our way but got a call from the captain at 5:35. He was enraged that we weren't there yet. Apparently this was the normal time for non-private charter cast-offs. But wow! The hostility! When we got on the boat at 5:50 it was clear that there had been bitching about us between the crew and the 4 or 5 crusty regulars. One of them whined like a little bitch to our face for a while about how all the other boats had already left and it was almost 6am! It made for a really unpleasant day because I kept wanting to slap that bitch's face after the way he spoke to us in the morning. The other issue that I had was that they were calling some REALLY small fish "keepers." I was like, "Whaaahh? Are those *really* legal?" They also had several lines of their own out. This meant that the minute the boat hit it's quota (2 fish per pole), they were able to wrap it up and head back. And that was bull crap because it was a GREAT day of fishing and there was no reason that each person who had paid SO much money couldn't catch their own 2 fish, except that the crew had met the quota early with their own poles and had kept every dubiously puny fish they caught. They got us back very early and summarily doled out the fish they caught to anyone who had caught one or none. They also made a big point of making everyone dole out $5 for the "biggest fish" pot but in the end there was no discussion about who won the pot. When someone asked, the deckhand jerked his head at one of their regulars and that was that. When I was there a few years before, there was also no attempt at weighing or measuring the fish to determine the largest. It was just eyeballed and declared a tie. So it seems they're about catching fish, not making it fun for their clientele. Well, that's the end of us using this outfit. We were clearly not wanted. Still, if you're a crusty old tool who fishes with them regularly, you may fit in. BTW, I strongly recommend that the 2 "unrecommended" reviews be read. They reflect our experience completely. read more

We had Chartered this Boat for our Church Group activity and we had a great time. Captain Jim has 40+ years of navigating experience in the Bay and his boat is spotless. It is very comfortable and clean and tidy. His crew member BaBa was awesome too very helpful showing us Novices the ropes in deep sea fishing. We had a great time over all. The only thing you need to bring is your motion sickness pills and a fishing license for the day. The rest you can purchase on board like renting fishing poles to buying the weights for the line. Fresh coffee was provided on board and plenty of free parking by the dock side. read more

​The previous couple times I went out with these guys everything was great but they missed it this weekend me and my partner were cod fishin and for almost a half an hour we sat there with no rig no help and although there were five deckhands only two of them were working on fishing all the rest of the guys were trying to catch fish themselves, come to find out my pole never had enough line on it to get to the bottom of the fishing area in order to catch ling cod , I was basically wasting my time , they were running low on tackle as well and I only lost one rig all day and it was as if we were breaking some kind of law and ignored as a result, regroup guys you had a good thing going read more

Nice boat, friendly staff, good times, good for beginners, and plenty of fish. Make sure to wear layers (it was significantly colder than I anticipated and quickly got warm once the fog burnt off) and be sure to bring Dramamine as the boat rocks a good bit in the open sea. Also, bring food. You can rent poles (w/ bait). Captain Jim (owner/operator) will take the boat under the Golden Gate Bridge and onto different spots around the Pacific (~60 minute boat ride) to where the fish are. My only complaints are that 1) my brother and I caught no fish and 2) Jim told my brother in passing a few days before our reservation that he may postpone the launch date. This was my second and last trip on the Outer Limits. The captain is friendly and competent, for sure. The crew, however, were rude and lazy - too many asshole comments and too many times they just weren't seeing tangles, hookups, etc. I actually saw one of them on his phone while anglers needed help. And if I want to get yelled at, I'll go to work... I go out fishing to have a good time, not mix it up with deckhands. Hey, I've fished on lots of party boats out of SF and even more out of San Diego, and I know these guys are a complete joke. You'll have a much better experience on a boat with professional crew - take your pick from the others and you'll be better off. read more

My son and I got a chance to go with Captain Jim on our fist ever ocean fishing trip. What a great day! I caught one and my son caught two. The boat landed 31 Salmon in total - with a few in the 25-30 pound range. And while catching fish is never a guarantee, almost everyone on board caught at least one and everyone went home with at least one salmon. Jim and his crew are friendly and helpful - even at 5am! Great way to spend a day, Captain Jim and crew are very enthusiastic and upbeat and they work hard to ensure everyone has a good day. The boat is clean and well maintained and the catamaran is very stable helping my wife who tends to seasickness has never had a problem on the Outer Limits. They watch over and jump on every catch assisting novices to ensure they land their fish, but still turning the pole back over to them once they clear all the other lines. We have been out several times on the Outer Limits over the years and it has always been a good day and we caught fish most trips. read more

I went salmon fishing on the Outer Limits yesterday we caught fish, I should say the crew caught fish. The experience for the client is awful. I am an experienced fishermen and have been fishing on charters in SF and around the world since I was 5 years old with my dad, I am 55. Jim and his crew could careless about the experience of the client. It's all about number of fish. The crew will practically reel your fish all the way to the boat. When they finally hand you the rod heaven forbid your inexperienced because the thrashing you get in horrible. One poor guy handed the rod back. These are supposed to be experts. When a fish is hooked the mayhem is unbelievable. They yell and badger all the clients on that side of the boat as Jim or the deckhand fight the fish. Jim the captain is the epitome of a crabby old man who probably needs to hang it up. I fished with him years ago and had a similar experience. Unfortunately a good friend asked me to go on a smaller group charter. I figured with the lighter load it woukd be a better experience. I paid $160 and stoped fishing a noon because it was unbearable. The boat caught 10 fish for 13 anglers which was decent compared to the other charters. I hear Jim boast about his numbers on the radio and have guys hold up fish so he can post picture on his website and misinform everyone what a great day his clients had. Going out on a fishing charter should be a fun, relaxing experience bonding with good people. The Outer Limits is all about numbers and could care less about the client experience. If you want to go out on a great boat fishing in Sausalito call Sean on the Hog Heaven. I usually go with him. Unbelievably great guy a total different experience and he catchs just as many fish if not more than the Outer Limits. Sean and his crew are great with both experienced and extremely helpful to the novice. The positive reviews the Outer Limits received must be people that really don't understand what a great day fishing is all about. You can go to Costco and buy a Salmon if it's only about the meat and save yourself the humiliation and money. read more

It wasn't my first trip with Out Limits but pretty sure my last. I always walk away with the same feeling. This wasn't fun and somewhat bothersome. The boat is really nice, large and you feel safe. Capt. Jim is a knowledgeable captain and fisherman. If coming home with meat is your only concern than I say go for it. The experience is always a frenzied, f bombing, pole grabbing orchestration by the crew. And did I mention the total disrespect for the fish. Body slamming them in the net, having to hit them several times because little effort is made to do it right the first time and throwing them in the holding tank like it was a basket ball competition. Lucky if your fish has any scales left on it. Heard the deck hand speak to an older gentleman in a disrespectful manner and when I requested that my 20" salmon be released to grow larger (I was fishing for the boat at this time) my request was ignored. Little is made to help make a wonderful fishing experience (lucky if you get to reel five revolutions before the deck hand tells you to lift the tip and they net the fish when we were fishing a min. of 35 feet). That is how much control they take with your fish!!!! I'm going to try other boats. read more

I absolutely loved my day out with Captain Christian and Big C's Charters! My brother and his family were in town and it happened to be Fleet Week in San Francisco with Blue Angels and others doing air shows over the bay. I had seen their posting on Facebook for cruises on the bay to see the Blue Angels. I called the Captain on very short notice ( hours before) and was told he would be coming in from a successful morning of fishing, but would clean the charming' Chasin Crustacean' and be happy to take us out, where we enjoyed the jets flying right above us! Christian was knowledgeable and experienced, always safely putting us in the perfect spot and we all had a very memorable day.
