BIG 5, Oakhurst: 2026 Aug 12 (4.75 of 5) I enjoy hiking, but recently my hiking shoes were giving me grieve. My toes bear the most abuse as I climb downhill so I decided to invest in a pair of running shoes. The difference between the two are 'night' and 'day'. Hiking shoes: I have three pairs and they all have shock-absorbing foam midsoles, and durable rubber outsoles with aggressive tread patterns for traction on dirt and rocks. I've interchanged using one to the other for 6 years now and thought I've become accustomed to them. Unfortunately, my recent hikes told me otherwise. My last hike to Chilnualna Falls nearly took my toenails off. My toes hit the hard toe cap and were bruised from the hike down. It may be true that hiking shoes might prevent ankle twists but I couldn't hike for weeks after that adventure. Running shoes: Running shoes are lightweight and flexible. They're engineered to absorb shock. I hiked with my 'new' running shoes to two different trails and my feet were quite comfortable. My toes did not smash into the toe caps and the shoes weigh much less than my hiking boots. I just have to be careful not to twist my ankles. I've always had a difficult time finding shoes to fit my small feet, so I was pleasantly surprised to find my running shoes at BIG 5. It's a perfect time to visit the store because of their 'special'. I got 25% off on top of the discounted price listed. Sara checked me out and mentioned that. If she had not mentioned the extra 25% off, I would have not known. So, Sara - thank you for your assistance. I truly appreciate your help. read more

In June 2022 my husband and I took a trip to Yosemite. While visiting a river along the way, my sandals broke. We found Big Five in Oakhurst and hoped to find some affordable sandals there. I found a lot of pricey sandals but then came across a pair for $20. Zane was very helpful checking in the back to find my size. I wanted to try on pants and he was very patient with me going in and out of the locked dressing room to try to find just the right pair. I gave this store 5 stars because of Zane and his helpfulness. I would shop here again and hope to get the same great customer service that we received read more

Helpful staff. We stopped in to get quick supplies for camping. Staff was fast, polite, helpful. Thank you!

Family of 20 went inside the store today, 4/4/24. As an ex retail employee, I can understand that when big families come in, the store might get messy or unorganized. But there is no reason to target any type of customer! Especially on a busy day when people were on vacation and went to a local store to buy forgotten items. Sine the momment we went an employee started on the speakers if you brake something a $50 fee will be apply. Momments later, if your kids have lucky charms, watch them as they are being found on the floor. My daughter might have dropped a few. Not on purpose! Lastly, my sister in law had a shake 6 she was still drinking, and when she went to ask for help, Store Manager Adam grabbed it and stated, " People are using our store as a trash place". I felt so disrespected we spent over $600 he should appreciate any customers that come in while their purchase is big or small, or don't buy anything at all. That's helping his conversion rate and meeting their daily goal! Definitely do not recommend this store! Never shopping here again There's definitely no customer service here! read more

Went by to get some shoes. While we were in the shoe department, ALL of the employees were gathered at the cash register laughing and joking. No one offered to help. Usually there is a fair selection and some reasonable prices. This time we saw nothing we wanted, and what there was was way overpriced. We've had good experiences here before, so maybe we'll try again. Or maybe not. We don't think the employees care one way or the other. read more

Justin really saved us!! He was really kind about everything and was very helpful in our time of need. I would trust him with my life. Most epic guy in there. read more

Exceeded expectations. Came in to buy a simple solid color T-shirt. Walked out with two at a very reasonable price. Staff was friendly. Store is clean and appears to be well laid out. Plenty of parking nearby. read more

Just want to give Tyler some praise! He went out of his way to help me find cleats for my kid and was super patient and kind. Greatly appreciate you Tyler! read more

Horrible customer service Rude and very unprofessional. Will never step in store again and will share with all my people my horrible experience read more

Very bad customer service! Assistant manager bill needs some people skills!! Went in to purchase ammo and did a background check. He came out and flung the paper at me. Told didn't need ammo that bad and split! Big 5 needs to Train these "managers" better. read more

I want to give a special Thanks to the manager, Eric, for helping me out of a jam today. I needed a very specific pump for my kayak and he came out to the hot parking lot to do a demonstration of a pump on my actual kayak. Thanks again for the great customer service. read more

Went here to stock up for a quick snow day with the family. Hubby, myself and two children went to purchase gloves and a sled. We were there less than 3 minutes before one of the workers appeared in our area to add more gloves to the rack. Ok, kind of weird that in that big store she needed to restock right near us but no biggie. Then she left and can BACK to take those same gloves off the rack and add them to another area. We felt like we were being watched. I'm sure she was asked to keep an eye on us so not her fault, I blame management. I know there aren't a lot of African-American families in Oakhurst, but not every person with some melanin is out to steal from your store. We still purchased our goods and went on our merry way, one bad experience does not stop the show. read more

This review applies to the Oakhurst location ONLY. Bought two beach chairs while vacationing there. Drove straight to Bass Lake. Opened up the new chairs. My 110# granddaughter sat in one of them and it collapsed. The next day we took the two chairs back to the store for an exchange or refund. The "manager" told my wife that they were "used" and therefore we'd have to take up the issue with the "manufacturer" WHAT??? We didn't know the chair was defective until we first deployed it and it collapsed! OF COURSE it was "used" at that point, technically. And he would not be convinced otherwise. So we left. EPILOG: We called Big 5 Corporate Customer Service, told them our story. The PROFESSIONAL CSR made arrangements for us to return the faulty product to another store near our home town on Sonoma County. There, the PROFESSIONAL manager cheerfully accepted the faulty product and issued us a full refund. MORAL OF THE STORY: there are other ways to get around a rock...when you are dealing with "rocks". So Big 5 came thru!! read more

Rude employees. Zero customer service. If you care about the way you are treated I recommend avoiding this place. The manager is just as rude as the rest of the employees. Don't waste your money here. read more

Worst Big 5 ever! We always bought at Big 5s around the country but don't stop here! Drive to Fresno if you have to. Rude and most unfriendly employees, especially in management. We feel sorry for the people who have to work there. read more

We called to find a pump for our raft and Ian went out of his way to find all the options, a hand pump, foot pump and battery pump. When we arrived Ian greeted us and had the one we wanted ready at the front desk! He even had the batteries ready that we would need for the pump. He was super friendly and helpful. Saved our day! read more

Terrible customer service by the Manager Bill and his staff. Bill has no personal customer service skills; rarely makes eye contact, poor communication all around. Never received a return call on a special order, as told; major accounting mess up when returning/exchanging items multiple times due to poor/inaccurate sizing of ladies wear. Oakhurst could do better....very sad representation of our area. read more

Worst customer service I have ever seen. I came in to do my background check to buy ammo, they took my $19 for a background check. I came back in a few weeks later, and no manager was working. They need a manager to sell ammo. I came back in today, and my application has expired. They told me it was only good for 30 days. They then told me I had to reapply and pay $19 again.I said ok, so can you give me a $19 credit when I come back to buy the ammo. NOPE! They don't give discounts. They never told me there was a 30 day time limit, it is not posted on there signs, and when I came back, no manager was scheduled to work that could sell ammo. Ariel Watson, the store manager, doesn't care about locals. Because she isn't a local. Stay away. read more

Giant thank you to Nate who went above and beyond! We stopped because we had a problem w our tent and needed a new one. I told Nate that we'd heard of easy up style tents and he said they had carried them in the past and didn't see them anymore. After helping me find a different one that was on sale, unbeknownst to us, while we looked around the store for other items he went in the back and started going thru to see if there were any we were looking for. Sure enough they had the perfect one hidden in the back that was on clearance. THANK YOU for taking the time unprompted to continue to search and find the perfect one! read more

I hate going to this store. It is the last place I will shop. I watched the clerk scold a gentleman because he was not standing on the assigned stickers on the floor at the cash register. I was scolded the last time I came to this store. I needed to make a return only to be told that I was going to have to wait awhile because both mangers were too busy for the return. There were maybe three people in the entire store. After I made my purchase, I had to hurry up and move so the clerk can spray down the table and sanitize it. This is done after every customer. It would be nice if there wasn't puddles of this liquid, what ever it is, left on the table that sits in front of the register. It would have been even nicer if I wasn't rushed out the door. What if I was an older lady with a cane, or an older man? Trust me when I say this, if it wasn't for medical reasons, I would have gone to Fresno. read more

I won't waste my time visiting this store again! The girl working behind the gun counter has no manners or an ounce of professionalism. Felt like we we interrupting her conversation with her work colleague which they continued to have after we were standing at the counter. Unbelievable! Then we she finally acknowledged us, her manner was very rude. Don't waste your time here. read more

To be honest, this was my first time ever at a Big 5 Sporting Goods and I was very impressed with the store, their inventory, but most importantly their staff. My partner and I came in the day after doing two big hikes in Yosemite which ended up with her having a painful hot spot in her heel. Coming from Mariposa where we were staying, we decided to take a trip to get a pair of inexpensive shoes to just do some leisure hikes and Ariel the Big 5 manager went above and beyond in customer service to help us with our needs! She even gave us great advice in using Moleskin! She wasn't pushing us to buy anything specific, we never felt obligated to buy anything at all, she was just extremely genuine in her desire to help a customer out. Being from Texas, we definitely know what southern hospitality is and she showed us some of that! And as we were checking out, a customer and his two sons were walking in maskless and another employee Christian calmly asked if they had masks (the father said no) and Christian told him the store policy of wearing a mask and offered solutions on buying a paper or cloth mask. The guy left with his two sons and eventually came back masked up. Anyways, great store and I'd return again if I ever need something and if I'm in the area of course. This is my first review on Yelp and felt the need to highlight these two employees for their amazing attitude in regards to customer service! read more

I went here twice when I was staying in nearby Wishon and the staff were really helpful and friendly both times I was there. The store has a great stock of items, including sleds and chains that my local store does not carry (it does not snow in the Bay). read more

Insanely overpriced. Customer service hit or miss. The fellow running the register the day I, as a "captive customer" (wildfires were happening and I was evacuated), had the personality of a rattlesnake. Won't shop there ever again -- no matter the circumstances. read more

Wonderful customer service! Our family was looking for swimsuits and the staff was very helpful.

Big 5 is definitely not a 5 star location, it scores a very boring 3 out of 5 on the Snasty scale. They carry a lot of items no one else carries in Oakhurst, which is convenient to not have to go to Fresno every time you need a bug net or camp fuel. Slightly overpriced on some of those items, but that is to be expected. There customer service though is all over the map. I've come in and had them be genuinely super kind and help carry things out to my car without asking and then other days when they are incredibly rude and not helpful read more

This Big 5 needs some serious help in customer service and quality. Usually I'm a fan of Big 5 but this location had a camelbak type backpack that I bought and the hose was broken. I was on my way to Yosemite so you can see that this item was needed for hiking. When I walked back into the store to show them that the item was not functional, they said there was nothing they could do. I asked to swap out the drink hose or water portion of the backpack and they refused. I ended up wasting over 30 minutes speaking to multiple employees and the manager. Finally I received a refund and left. They lost my business. When someone is spending money in your store, you take care of them and stand behind the quality of what you sell. Take broken items off the shelf please. read more

I asked for a gift receipt for my purchase and the cashier didn't know how. Ok no big deal. Then the manager didn't even know how to do it!! Managers should be able to work the register that's why they get paid more right? The line got held up all for a silly gift receipt. Is it really that hard?? read more

I have shopped here on several occasions and have found my experience to be positive each time. The selection is pretty good for most items and the clerks have been polite. read more

found one of my favorite fishing lures there to catch trout since the last one got taken by a fish.

The one star evaluation of Big 5 really isn't representative of the everyday practices at this store. It looks as though that customer experienced an exception to the everyday service. Black Friday brings out the worst in people and I do not doubt the reviewer had a bad experience. I don'tknow what more a business could do to help the customers they serve. I have been a customer of Big 5 Oakhurst since the day the opened in Oakhurst. The people working there, as well as the management have been more than helpful. They have refunded and exchanged items that were unsatisfactory, located items that were out of stock and called me when they received them, provided discounts whenever possible, and held items by phone when I could not get to the store. What more you can ask of a business? read more
