REVIEW: "Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York)" at the Longacre Theatre on May 23, 2026…read more In between two heavy-duty, critically acclaimed Broadway revival productions ("Ragtime" and "Death of a Salesman"), Jamie W and I went to see this entirely original show, a charming and energetic two-hander starring genuinely likable leads with loads of talent. This British-born musical was written by Jim Barne and Kit Buchan almost as a valentine to New York, and consequently, playing now in a Broadway house merely enhances its quirky local appeal. The lightweight premise rests on Dougal, a twentysomething Brit who flies to NYC to attend his estranged father's wedding. He is met at the airport by Robin, a native New Yorker and rather cynical barista whose older sister is marrying his father. True to the title, she needs to pick up the wedding cake, and he tags along. What ensues is the predictable opposites-attract hijinks that set them up for romantic entanglement. You would think the predictable plot turns would trivialize the story, but the leads allow the show take flight. With boisterous elan, Sam Tutty manages to make Dougal's relentless cheerfulness both a badge of honor and a protective shield. I remember Christiani Pitts from her feisty 2018 starring role in the failed "King Kong" Broadway musical when she was overshadowed by a humongous puppet (review: https://yelp.to/_k86558D_q). As Robin, she is much better served by the human size story here, and she nicely handles the blossoming of her character's initially guarded persona. They both bring real joy to their cavorting, and director Tim Jackson's fleet direction helps maintain the show's buoyancy. Scenic designer Soutra Gilmour cleverly furnishes the rotating stage with grey suitcases of varying sizes to provide creative flexibility to the settings of the scenes. Broadway is back!…read more Attending the opening of the off Broadway production of Mandela which tells the epic story of Nelson Mandela's political struggle to lead South Africa out of apartheid into democracy and freedom, as well as the intimate, personal story of what 'mandiba' and his loved ones endured as a family throughout the years of struggle for the liberation of South Africa. The theater is small & quaint. If you've ever attended an off Broadway production then you know the theaters are typically old & recluse. It's a small theater for a small production but cozy nonetheless. Seating is comfortable and the spacing of the chairs gives good leg room. The air conditioning feels good and the sound system is consistent and not over bearing for the small confined space. It's a rainy day today in NYC which made it a perfect day to attend a show. The mayoral candidate Eric Adams will be in attendance tomorrow which is also Mandela's birthday. Glad to be back outside NYC!

The theater is in a synagogue! Home of Congregation Ezrath Israel. The building, a national landmark, dates from 1923. Former congregants include Jewish celebrities like Jack Benny, Milton Berle, Shelley Winters, two of the three Stooges ... the list goes on. There are photographs in the hallways. The theater itself is comfortable, though nothing special. As it was a hot day, I was happy the space was adequately air conditioned. My singleton seat was in the front row! Note that folks with mobility problems may have issues. There are stairs. The stairway leading to the two-stall bathroom on the second floor is steep. One can tell it's an old building, with few if any upgrades in its 100+ years of existence.

However, it's just been extended through January 13 (with no performances from December 21-26). The play was slow-going initially, but eventually it became terrific - and there was a *very* emotional scene towards the end where I was reduced to tears. There's no assigned seating and some people were behaving almost like children before we could enter the theater (trying to be first in line, as if we were in kindergarten) - but the guy at the desk was quite pleasant and helpful. Also, ticket prices are a *bargain*.

Walking through its doors feels like stepping into another world--one filled with anticipation and excitement. My partner and I were lucky to obtain tickets via an online market reseller (the Tickets Center) at Left Orchestra, row P, for last night's performance of Riverdance 30. Upon entering this warm and inviting venue as first-timers with an orchestra and the balcony section, we were greeted by the staff and waited for the doors to open 30 minutes before the start of the show. The bar on the main floor had alcohol, soda, chips, and other light snacks. Our cushiony seats were comfortable, providing a clear view of the stage and a great sound system. The show was a fusion of traditional and contemporary Irish as well as international dance. The music is choreographed with stunning costumes and cutting-edge visuals, bringing its magic to audiences. Prices were comparable to the area and artist. Parking was offered via the online market reseller, and I purchased it. The location was a 15 min walk, and we were okay with that. It was so easy to enter and exit without the congestion. However, the QR scan ticket provided by them was not able to be scanned at the destined location machine. As a result, I had to pay twice. When communicating with this reseller, they refused to refund, as it was a final sale. We had an amazing time and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great night out by contacting directly the Mayo PAC and not Tickets-Center.
