An unusual off Broadway performance place with some religious and historical background. Actors' Temple is actually a Jewish Temple and still apparently serves the community as such. However, it also lends its space to talented performers of great productions. One being Layon Gray's BLACK ANGELS OVER TUSKEGEE. Which performed at the Actors' Temple as far back as 2011 and performed its 3000 show yesterday, on its last night in NYC before going on tour yet again. Excellent production of a poignant point in African Americans history that's hardly ever giving the attention it deserves. The Actors' Temple offers orchestra (same level not graduated) and balcony seating. The seat were very comfortable but because they are equal level the closer you are the better the view in the orchestra. Box office available onsite for purchase 20 minutes prior to performance. No concession options available. The actual Temple is very well maintained with many original details and religious artifacts displayed. As well a historic timeline of some great performers that one can only assume has performed at the Temple in the past. Overall a wonderful space to have on your radar for whatever production they may holding. Easily accessible and inviting.

Stage set for "The girls of summer" play

I came to this theatre to see an off broadway play with a friend on a Saturday night. The place was small but comfortable. However, once I was seated I realized (to late) that the further back you sit the harder it can be to see. The audience seating is level and not graduated like most other theatres. The bathrooms were pretty large but they were upstairs. During intermission I realized that the theatre must also serve as an actual temple part of the time presently or in the past. Im also not sure how accessible this theatre would be for the handicapped because I didnt recall seeing any assisting devices to get up all of the stairs. I enjoyed the play that we saw (The Girls of Summer) and thought that the story line was orginal. I definitely would return inthe future to see a play here now that I have a heads up on the seating.

My friend and I came to see an off broadway show via living socal deal on a Saturday night. Though a small cinema, the seats were comfortable with a great view of the stage. The play itself, "The Girls of Summer"was just as good and entertaining. I dont recall seeing a place to purchase drinks or snacks during intermission. The bathrooms were small and limited for the size of the temple. However, most places dont have enough bathrooms for the ladies. Overall, I would return to check out other shows playing in this temple.

Sometimes theater, sometimes a temple. Small intimate theater that has some very interesting shows. Today it was "who's your bagh daddy, or how I started the war in Iraq". The show provided doughnuts and coffee before the show, very nice touch. Always well worth the walk over to 47th street, between 8th & 9th avenue

Welcoming to all. A jewel of a synagogue. Beautifully conducted services with singing and drumming.

Beautiful, historic building in the heart of NYC. Love attending Friday night services here - very warm, inclusive, and intimate.

This temple was built in 1928-1930 for the Reform Jewish Congregation Emanu-El of New York. The church seats 2,500 worshippers and is one of the largest synagogues in the world. I believe it is the largest in the United States. There's a wealth of information about this church on the internet if you're interested. I can attest to the welcoming reception visitors receive when you visit. It's always open for everyone. I'll never forget when this synagogue had the service for Joan Rivers funeral. I watched from across the street. If you look up Congregation Emanu-El of New York there's a list of the notable members and funerals. I'm recommending.

Then they were told to go to a different service area--which was locked. EVEN BEFORE the event started, the guard said it was already "full" and couldn't find our names on the list. Come 7:15pm, after waiting another 30 minutes, I asked to speak with the sponsor or event staff, but no one came down. The guard even went upstairs in the elevator to check and returned saying the event was full (which I honestly doubt), and guard said they mentioned they'd "fix the site next time." THIS IS VERY MISLEADING. Your RSVP form was still open--I was waiting at the security entrance only to be told it was full because you didn't have proper staff present! Completely wasted my evening. The whole situation was disrespectful and poorly managed. Your RSVP form clearly states "ALL Welcome," and it remained open at 6pm (so it couldn't have been full), plus my colleague had arrived early. WE ARE NOT COMING BACK. I do NOT recommend this event or any future services hosted by Christ Church NYC / online or Emanu-EL. I'm sharing this review so others are aware!

I sent my dad here while on a trip to NYC as it was the closest conservative (actually it's…read moreorthodox) synagogue to the hotel we were staying at. He went for services on Saturday morning, and said there were tons of people there and he was very impressed generally. They noticed that he was new and invited him to roll up the torah, which was cool of them if you ask me. He also reported that the kiddush was the biggest he's ever seen and the cholent was a lot like his grandmother used to make. Overall, the most glowing report about a synagogue my dad's ever given. So, if you're in the area, go. Also, they have an emeritus rabbi who was ordained in 1935 and still attends services regularly. Pretty cool.

The diversity of congregants and heimish style services really makes this a prime choice if you are hunting for the right shul. Sometimes it is packed, sometimes it is small and cozy. But one thing is always constant--great spiritual services and a great kiddush to socialize and mingle with fellow Jews. Scotches, bourbons, chulent, kugels are some of the selections you will find on any given shabbat. The contrast of the old and new, Rabbi Kleiman and Rabbi Shloush, a 150 year old congregation and building, versus an energetic young professionals group called "The L'Chaim Club" just makes this place a must see. I highly reccomend stopping in either Friday night or Saturday day.
