Surgery, avoided! Dr. Carr is an outstanding physical therapist who is knowledgable, intuitive, and caring. I had a great experience working with her as she helped me recover and regain full function after my injury. While practicing with my Division 1 tennis team, I suffered a complete (non retracted) tear to my ACL along with a meniscus tear and bone bruising. After scheduling ACL surgery, I needed to select a physical therapy provider to work with pre and post surgery. Having had my share of sports-related injuries over the years, and experiencing insurance-driven overcrowded PT facilities, I was looking for a PT who offered a more integrated and personalized approach for my pre-hab, and re-hab. Then I found Dr Carr via her website. Dr Carr's therapy practice is a soothing boutique-style space to heal. Her range of modalities are gentle, and the re-training exercises she prescribes are effective. She is also a walking encyclopedia on nutrition and supplements. She is the picture of health, so she walks the talk. As my surgery date approached, the thought of surgery and my ACL being replaced by a cadaver tendon freaked me out so much that I cancelled my ACL/ meniscus surgery. But I continued therapy with Dr. Carr. Dr. Carr suggested I might seek a second opinion and look into stem cell/PRP regenerative treatment. I was interested, so she referred me to a leading functional medicine doctor. Long story short, I was a candidate for the procedure, and it was a success! My follow-up MRI revealed my ACL was intact and the meniscus was healed! The combo of the procedure and Dr Carr's treatments and exercises got me back to playing tennis again. Last year I fell and fractured my shoulder. After many visits to the orthopedist, my pain level wasn't improving, but all the doctor wanted to do was for me to rest the shoulder and continue getting x-rays to check on the progress. Four months in, I got tired of waiting on an injury that should have already healed and took myself to see Dr. Carr and never looked back. It turned out the problem with my shoulder wasn't the original fracture (which had indeed healed) but the tendinitis that had developed around it. When I first came to Dr. Carr I could barely lift my arm. Between my sessions with her and the home exercises she gave me, my mobility dramatically increased even in the first few weeks. I bought two packages of sessions with her, and since my shoulder was back to almost 100% by the end of the second package, she helped me out with exercises for some of the discomfort and pain I was having due to pregnancy. Dr. Carr is amazing at what she does, is lovely to talk to during sessions, and is very professional and timely about scheduling. Erin Carr is an amazing therapist who is both a doctor and the best physical trainer I've ever been too. I've had problems with my knees for many years, my kneecaps felt unstable, cracked when I walked and popped out number of times. Erin immediately knew what the problem was - the imbalance in my leg muscles (dominant quads, week glutes) that put my loose kneecaps in even greater danger. Dr. Carr is incredible. I came to her with intense and ongoing lateral foot pain and pretty bad numbness and tingling across my outer thigh. She fixed my foot pain with a shoe recommendation and a single exercise. For reference, I had seen a pediatrist prior who told me I had a stress fracture and gave me advice that didn't work. Within a few sessions, my outer thigh numbness has subsided around 85%, basically to the point where it never bothers me. I'm confident within 1-2 more visits it will be 99% gone. She truly treats the body holistically and has an incredible understanding of anatomy and functional medicine as a whole. I was someone who used to enjoy very intense tissue work in the past, and so I was somewhat skeptical on our first session with her lighter tissue work. But you can't argue with results, and mine have been as good as it gets. Having been through many injuries in my past, I don't give recommendations lightly, so if you're going through an injury/pain see her! You'll be very happy you did. The at home exercises she provides helps you ween off the PT if you choose to, which is also something I was looking for as I didn't want to become dependent on ongoing tissue work to keep my injuries at bay. After a few months of suffering from pain and extremely limited range of motion in my shoulder I decided to see Dr. Erin Carr (based on the reviews I read on Yelp and her blog article on the rotator cuff). I never would have imagined relief from a single session, but after my first visit there was a decrease in pain and tightness and a slight but still noticeable increase in range of motion. After a few visits, Erin noticed that my body's ability to naturally heal itself had plateaued. She suspected I had a torn rotator cuff and referred me to a physiatrist, who performed a minor non-surgical procedure on what turned out to be a fairly significant tear. Erin then worked with me to rehabilitate my shoulder and get me to 90-95% (and I expect to get to 100 if I stick with her prescribed exercises). This is pretty amazing considering that 10 months ago I wasn't able to throw a ball or even lift my arm out in front of me. Erin has an in-depth knowledge of physiology and a thorough understanding of how the complex network of muscles and nerves work together to help the body function. She is not of the "no pain, no gain" school of thought. With me, her therapy consisted of light, intuitive touch and resistance exercises designed to activate those underworked muscles whose inactivity led to bad habits, poor posture, and ultimately pain. She also has a calm, relaxed deameanor that makes her a pleasure to be around. I saw Erin for about 8 weeks after I took a hard fall on both knees. She was so helpful and so hands-on. She didn't waste our time together watching me do exercises, the way other PTs have done. On my initial review of Dr. Carr (02/15/2015), I shared how she saved my knee. I was literally scheduled for surgery, but decided to give Dr. Carr's treatment a chance. Indeed--with deft hands--she manipulated my knee (and inner-workings) during several sessions. Resulting in it becoming completely healed. No pain, no issues--I returned to normal activities, which at that time included challenging/physically demanding, Bikram Yoga classes. I threw out my lower back in July. This is a 24 year old injury, but at the age of 47 I was basically confined to a chair all day. After seeing other Dr's., I was recommended to Dr. Carr at the Akasha Center. After 4 and 1 1/2 months, my injury is basically gone. I have returned to my regular routine at the gym and can clean the house without ice packs on my back. I really thought this was a permanent injury. Miracle Worker!! where do I begin, she is amazing, she performed miracles for my 85 year old mother. I live out of state, i emailed her several times to "screen" for my mother who had fallen and broken her hip. With her heart complications, she was told by the surgeon and doctors that she'd never have her old life back, she'd be walking with a walker or cane at best, and certainly never driving. Thank god I read about Dr. Carr, and how she works to heal "mind and body". My mother came out of the hospital so depressed, so convinced she'd spend the rest of her life in bed, she couldn't even get from the bed to the bathroom with a walker. Dr. Carr worked miracles, she came to the house for my mom (until my mom could get to her office), and within a week had my mom confident enough to get her hair done and out to dinner with a walker. within just a few months, my mother was back to her full schedule of every day out to lunches, dinners, bridge games and theater, and barely using her cane. And just about 6 months from the terrible fall and broken hip, she was even driving again, and bringing the cane only when at a crowded venue - and then using it just to wave the crowd away! My mother is not an easy woman, she can be stubborn and negative, and she adores Dr Carr, and even now sees her to improve balance and mobility.
