Firstly I have to use this medium to thank Dr. Chang publicly as she is a godsend (or lizard people send?) to the medical community and to any patients lucky enough to see her. I came to Dr. Chang after seeing two other neurologists who had misdiagnosed and improperly medicated me. This caused me to have a seizure while driving and damage not only my car, but two other stranger's cars. It was terrifying. Short version if you're low on time (though I would encourage you to read my entire story) - Dr. Chang is truly one of the most kind, thoughtful, empathetic and impactful medical professionals I've ever encountered. If you are experiencing life-altering issues, I simply can't recommend her enough. Long version - After many significantly traumatizing and incredibly stressful life events in a short period of time, I began getting unexplained shooting and "pin prick" pains in my arms and across random spots in my body. I was referred to a neurologist in Orange County (3.5 stars on Yelp!, but hey, he was covered by my insurance), and I spent 6 months across 6-8 visits being poked, having nerve conduction studies (not fun), taking various pills, wearing medicinal patches, etc., all the time not getting better, and becoming frustrated with the lack of progress and care shown by the medical team. An acquaintance who works in the dermatology field heard about my struggles, and said he would reach out to his senior colleagues and report back about "the best neurologists in Southern California." Marisa was one of the names on a very short list. When I sat down with Dr. Chang for the first time, it was apparent why she is considered one of the best. She was kind, empathetic and explained what she thought I was going through in simple, easy to understand terms. We came up with a plan, and I am thrilled to say that I am well on the way to being back to my old self. Dr. Marisa Chang is one of the sweetest doctors I have ever met. She truly cares about her patients. She does not rush you in and out of your appointment like some doctors do. I have had occipital neuralgia since 2021. I have been to the UCLA Neurology Clinic and the doctors there just brush off your concerns or even worse, just brush you off to a nurse practitioner or an LVN. One of my favorite doctors in the world -- and she's not even my doctor! She has been my mother's doctor for almost a decade now, and has been an absolute life saver. She is empathetic and kind, and listened to my mother when no one else would. She was the first to give my mother a fibromyalgia diagnosis after decades of other doctors ignoring or dismissing my mother's debilitating pain. I recently came to Dr Chang after years of frequent migraines. I have been to many doctors over the years for migraines and unfortunately, I have become a very seasoned patient. Dr Chang has been truly exceptional. Not only is she wise and very knowledgeable, she also listens and has a great bed-side manner. Im so thankful I was referred to Dr. Chang by my primary care physician. As a registered nurse and having worked in many medical offices I can honestly say her staff is warm, kind and helpful. 5+++ stars for Marisa Chang and her staff. Dr. Marisa Chang: I first met Dr. Chang in 2013. She was one of the very few doctors in my area who could treat my condition. I immediately felt very comfortable and at ease while speaking with her about very personal issues. I swear I was dying, in pain, on pain meds. Well, she fixed all of that. 2015-2016: Here I am again. I'm a mess. Can barely walk, with degenerative discs causing me excruciating pain. Dr. Chang gives me a huge hug (what Doctor do you know that does that??) immediately putting me at ease, once again, remembering where I was. She recommends this crazy procedure and I'm all in. She explains everything in detail, so you're not in the dark about anything. *They have a state of the art procedure/surgery room right in the office. Huge plus. I've never met the kindest nurse **Xavier** (take note) in my entire life. He's my savior. The procedure worked! Pain free after years!! I was looking at fusion, at a very young age; now I don't have to worry about that anymore :-) Dr. Chang has turned out to be one of the most important people in my life. She's the kind of Doctor you wish could be your doc for everything. It would be hard to describe the respect and appreciation I have for Dr. Chang. Pain is a difficult thing to diagnose and deal with so the other reviewer here may have had a singularly bad experience but mine was the polar opposite. Dr. Chang was recommended to me by an endodontist (Dr. Thomas Rauth, also terrific) to help diagnose a pain in my upper jaw that was excruciating and persistent. She figured it out immediately and had an MRI take to validate her diagnosis, which turned out to be spot-on. She then prescribed a medication that had an immediate, profound effect - essentially eliminating the pain that I had been experiencing for months in less than a day - and I have been virtually pain-free since my first visit. Other people may have personal assistants or personal chefs. Who cares - I now feel like I've got my own personal miracle worker. She's terrific and has a wonderful staff and lovely office as an added benefit. I'd recommend her to anyone without any hesitation whatsoever. Absolutely top-notch care. read more

Marisa Chang is a beyond-amazing doctor and I am blessed that a friend recommended her. My 16 year old has been dealing with crippling migraines for the past 9 months. I was referred to Dr Chang by my friend who is an orthopedic surgeon, after suffering from a series of excruciating and debilitating headaches. As a dentist, I wanted to go to someone who really understood pain and headaches. After being misdiagnosed by a few doctors, Dr Chang was the only one who able to diagnose my tension headaches. She put me on a medication regimen that worked wonders and alleviated the pain. I found her to be so personable, intelligent and thorough. Dr Chang literally gave me my life back. I suffered from pelvic pain for over 6 months before seeing Dr Chang. I was in pain every day and could not tolerate sitting. I tried surgery, various therapies, medications, and a nerve block, but nothing worked. She diagnosed me with an atypical neuropathy and started me on medication that nobody else had tried. Within a couple of months, I was able to resume my normal activities. Dr Chang is very caring. She comes to the waiting room to greet her patients. I never had to wait for more than 15 minutes to see her. The only drawback to her practice, is that she is out of network for insurance, so the visits can be expensive. Dr. Chang is fantastic. I had been to a couple of doctors researching what I knew was a neurological issue and had a good idea of its origin. Other doctors thought I was crazy and treated me as such. Dr. Chang and I were on the same page from the beginning and she was able to treat me without having to be hospitalized via their adjacent surgical center where I received infusions for a week. It worked! Her staff was so patient and Really professional. Kristina, her assistant, is really sharp and I never waited more than 10 minutes if that. I love this doctor. My first visit was an hour long, and though I was 15 minutes late (excruciating chronic pain sometimes slows a person down), Dr. Chang still spent the full hour listening carefully and empathetically, asking all the right questions, performing the appropriate evaluations, and doing the thing no other doctor has ever done-- she actually read the 3-page list of symptoms I had typed up. She was a breath of fresh air, as I had just been to a pompous male doc who wouldn't even give it a glance, treated me like an unreliable witness, then started testing the wrong side of my face. You bet I'm gonna Yelp him. Dr. Change arrived at the diagnosis of trigeminal neuropathy. Then she said those all-important words: "You're not crazy. I see two or three patients each week who have what you have." She then listed the various approaches we could take for my problem and we moved forward from there. I'm a work-in-progress, but she never judges me for the treatment choices I make. She hears me out, then makes suggestions and we move forward. His doctors recommended more exercise and when things got worse, they recommended surgery. That is when we sought the expertise of Dr. Chang. I'm writing this review because I tried to be subtle and have potential patients call me privately, but the moderators of Yelp thought I didn't have direct experience with her. I did, so I am reposting. I have Atypical Trigeminal Neuralgia. Dr. Chang is unusually optimistic and assured me, in no uncertain terms, that an operation could cure my ATN. Dr. Sheldon Jordan, who she works with, performed the operation. In a post-op meeting in her office, which she charged me for! she declared it "medically successful" which was a lie! Dr. Jordan told me why it didn't work (he didn't write it down, he demonstrated with his finger - by showing where nerve cells might be.) Dr. Chang blithely suggested we "try again." Of course my insurance wouldn't pay for it again - it was hard enough persuading them to pay for the first go-round. But she should have more accurately its potential for success in the first place. For someone with ATN, to whom pain is 24/7, this is crucial. And charging for the follow-up visit? None of my other neuros ever did that. Maybe she and Dr. Jordan are effective if you have migraines or other issues. If you have ATN, I would not suggest going to her. She is very well respected among neurologists, so this caveat is for patients who have super-high hopes - because those of us who suffer so greatly grasp at straws. I hate to criticize doctors who may help people with other problems, but I have had to re-post because my subtle request that patients contact me privately for my experience wasn't sufficient for Yelp moderators. Dr. Chang destroyed my life and face. I wish I was exaggerating. I went to her for sinus & occasional occipital pain I was having and she performed pushed radio frequency on me, stabbing & jabbing needles deep into my face and back of head. I cried hysterically during the painful procedure and screamed for her to stop but she didn't.. That was a year and four months ago. Since then, there has not been a single day since that I have not been in horrific, crushing, debilitating pain. She destroyed not only my life and wellbeing, but the girl I was prior to her procedure. I cannot talk, chew, smell, or smile without pain. She created trigeminal neuralgia I never had prior to seeing her and displaced my jaw. I am in agony EVERY single day, and she left permanent injury, swelling, and disfiguration to the left side of my face, nose, undereye, jaw. This is coupled with the stabbing occipital area to which my pain is scrambled. Everyday is a nightmare since she single handedly ruined my life. I had to move back in with family to take care of me. I have become severely depressed and completely unable to function, drive, etc. Life is a daily hell and I have suicidal thoughts because of the amount of horrendous pain her careless procedure caused me. She said the pulsed radio frequency would last 6-8 months. It has been 16 months and the pain has not changed. I am in agony and have had many visits to the ER for the pain. Not only did I lose my quality of life, ability to smile without pain, ability to just EXIST without pain, ability to drive because the pain is debilitating, but my mom has lost her daughter. From the moment I got out of the procedure in which I cried hysterically to now, I will never be the same person I was. I spend my life in isolation and do not socialize because I cannot even be with people due to the severity of the pain. I recall she did not even clean the needle between the spots she so deeply shoved into my face and pulsed horrific pain 45 seconds each area. I wish Dr. Chang could feel a fraction of the pain I have suffered 24/7. She probably couldn't fathom the pain, agony, loss, etc. I am terrified her damage is permanent, and if that is the case, I will be absolutely heartbroken, as will my family and friends, as I am not the person I used to be and most likely never will be from that trauma.. Doctors, surgeons, and neurologists I have seen since are horrified when they hear what she did to me. I have never written a negative review but must speak my truth to warn others of the damage she is capable of. I went from a smiling happy girl who had some sporadic sinus pain to now an incapacitated shell of a person with physical changes, long lasting swelling and permanent marks on my face from her carelessness. Post procedure my days are spent on the couch or in bed crying from pain, icing my face, and at doctors appts/MRIs, trying all types of treatments to reduce the pain with no success, surgeon appts to discuss potential surgeries, every test imaginable to see if we can figure out how to reverse some of the damage she created. I have noticed some of her bad reviews mysteriously "vanished". Similar to the way she vanished when I contacted her after the procedure to say what horrendous stabbing pain I was in, no one from her office got back to me. I am devastated the horrible effect she has had on me, my life (loss of life), and feel strongly she should not be practicing medicine. My story serves as a cautionary tale to others, and I worry for their sake knowing what she is capable of doing. Please be careful. And to Dr. Chang - I truly hope you pray deeply for me, for a miracle to happen to eliminate my pain. I do believe in karma and feel perhaps you should use your time researching ways to counteract the damaging effects you've had on myself and others before you touch another patient and ruin them. Is it now Yelp's policy to post only the reviews of the past year? (So it would seem with only 5 reviews from 2014 ONLY.) Without stating the obvious, this would seem to be a very short-sighted policy without giving us the benefit of knowing a doctor's past "history" with other patients. I don't remember what I wrote here previously, but will post an edited version of a review that I left about Dr. Chang on "Vitals.com" who, interestingly enough, does NOT delete older reviews. Here's an edited version of that review: "First of all, one feels like the meter is running for EVERYONE at this office. The entire operation is one big money-making machine. Dr. Chang personally is one of the most arrogant doctors I have had the displeasure of meeting in a very long time. She is condescending, did not review all the records that I painstakingly put together per her assistant's request, and rushed through my all-important intake appt. like she had a hot date to get to. She did not consider my situation, nor my input in making recommendations and treated me with contempt and disrespect. She may have excellent training, but this young and again, I say, arrogant doctor has a long, LONG way to go before she is a true healer. RUN, don't walk in the opposite direction of this doctor! I did so much better elsewhere and found a brilliant AND compassionate doctor who truly listened and truly helped me through an exceedingly difficult time in my life... You can do the same! It IS possible to get excellent treatment without being condescended to or demeaned in any way!" read more

Dr. Chang is the WORST neurologist. She has no regard for the well-being of her patients. This is the best warning I can give anyone reading these reviews. My daughter has had daily excruciating pain of due a procedure that Dr. Chang did and doctors now say that it's probably going to be permanent nerve damage which means she will be in excruciating facial pain for the rest of her life. Dr. Chang did a procedure called pulse radio frequency never described in detail what she was doing, much less all the risks, and shoved needles in her face with NO anasthesia. There were 15 negative reviews here I heard before and somehow they got erased. Do not become her next victim! For those of you who have written me with words of support in taking this case to the Calif. Medical Board, thank you.
