Dr. Danielle Santora is absolutely PHENOMENAL in every way. She is upbeat, positive, INCREDIBLY well versed in PT, solution oriented, immensely helpful each session, and an out of the box thinker who treats each session with a rare fresh set of eyes so you can actually progress. These are just a few of Danielle's attributes. I unfortunately started at the wrong pelvic floor PT at a different establishment last March after being diagnosed with PFD and as a compliant, diligent patient, each session felt like a waste of time. I would ask for more exercises, we would spend most of the time doing a lazy ILU and then after starting late (despite me being early!), we would end early. The experience became such a waste of time I bought a theragun and kept doing this same repetitive exercises. I spent 6 months trying to do more and progress and of course wasn't get better so it felt like a waste of time and money and my condition worsened despite my efforts. I knew I had to try again and did a lot of research and networking to ultimately identify and get into Beyond Basics, which I cannot stress enough is in a class of its own. I am so grateful I ended up at Beyond Basics with Danielle. No two sessions are generally alike in the sense that she's ALWAYS giving you new exercises to switch things up because you are actually making progress! She follows that progress with you and tailors your at home program around it making you not only much stronger than when you start, but you will feel better! Her upbeat spirit makes her a great coach while you move along in your journey and learn so much more than you might ever have imagined. Danielle is a wealth of knowledge who is willing to make the time to speak to your doctors and specialists and has a strong network should you find yourself in need of more help in other areas. The front desk, Patty, Jurissa, and Veronica are also lovely, warm and welcoming and most importantly are great partners when it comes to scheduling appointments. After years of chronic neck and back restrictions that I usually compensate for and try to manage, I was still having frequent episodes of pain. I've had good benefit from physical therapy and I decided to try acupuncture as a complementary discipline. My sessions with Paula Haberman, LicAc have changed my life!! My visits with Paula were at the Beyond Basics Physical Therapy office, where her practice is co-located. The office is pleasant and very clean; the staff members are friendly, capable, and kind. Prior to the initial session, I filled out an extensive questionnaire that Paula reviewed with me. It made feel that she knows and understands my health as much as or more than my primary care physician (who I've been going to for over 20 yrs). She did a thorough assessment of my postural alignment and general muscle tone, identifying areas of miaalignment and excessive/unbalanced tension. She explained that although my symptoms were in 2 areas of my body (left side of neck, right side of low back), to receive optimal benefit of acupuncture requires needling throughout the body to balance the energy. After assessment and explanation, I got onto the treatment table. Once she ensured that I was comfortable and relaxed, the needle part of the treatment began. I barely felt most of the needles as they were inserted! Once all the needles were in, Paula covered me with a mylar blanket to keep me warm and left me for ~ 20 min, during which time I would feel tension leaving my body. In some sessions, she would perform "dry needling" to release tension/spasm in areas that were especially resistant to relaxation. It was evident to me that "dry needling" in combination with comprehensive acupuncture was far superior to "dry needling" as a free-standing treatment. After each session, Paula reassessed my alignment and muscle tone and noted improved symmetry and less unbalanced tension, which I could feel myself! Furthermore, I could feel more improvement each session! In my day to day life, it became easier to perform the corrective exercises that my physical therapist had prescribed for me and I have greater ease with maintaining good posture throughout the day. I periodically go back to Paula when I feel myself regressing and she always sets me straight!! The sessions are not inexpensive, but I believe that excellent care is well worth the cost. Let me make this very very clear. I came here to see Paula Haberman for dry needling. I recieved acupuncture. Paula Haberman for dry needling of the pelvic floor. I received zero dry needling. I had a 4 to 6 minute assessment. I laid on a table face down. Acupuncture needles were placed on my coccyx and then throughout my body. A total of about 25 needles. It took about 20 minutes to place the needles. From there a tissue paper like blanket was placed on me for me to lay down for the remainder of the hour and "let the needles do their work". Textbook acupuncture style table flipping. I'm not here to discuss what acupuncture is. I will elaborate on dry needling and myofascial trigger point release. In a rather simplified explanation, dry needling is a procedure where a needle filament is inserted into a myofascial trigger point or a muscle knot. The mechanical disruption of the trigger point from the insertion of the needle allow for the trigger point to release. Pain relief is almost immediate. The muscle fibre returns to it's normal state in about 3 to 5 days if done correctly. Myofascial trigger points are discrete hyperirritable nodules in a taut band of skeletal that can only be diagnosed by systematic palpation of the soft tissue by an experienced examiner. I recieved nothing like that. Again I recieved acupuncture. Not trigger point dry needling. 15 minutes into my hour session I knew her treatment was complete bull. I should have got up and left right there but there were needles in my backside and I was already there. I followed Beyond Basics PT on Instagram after a friend was going there for postpartum pelvic floor PT and was raving about it. When I needed PT for my shoulder, I knew that sports medicine was not the right fit, and that BBPT's holistic, mind body connected approach was what resonated with me. My therapist, Kathryn takes time at the beginning of each visit to see how I'm doing, physically and emotionally/mentally, and tailor our activities for that day- if I'm anxious or stressed we work on that before my muscles. It really feels like care based around ME. The rooms are private (except the larger shared exercise room) so I feel really relaxed. Consent is really important to me in medical and therapeutic places and my comfort and consent always feel centered in my care. Katheryn matches my playful attitude while also being a solid provider of encouragement and cheering! She also noticed that I am more engaged with my exercises if we make them a game, and I LOVE that. I'm so grateful that I found a provider I trust. I look fwd to going every week. The admin staff is great and the other therapists seem cheery and professional. It is expensive but for me it has been worth it to invest in my healing. Had a wonderful experience at Beyond Basics Physical Therapy with Iris Platt - she's the best! Extremely thorough and personalized treatment. Iris did a great job of not only treating me, but spending time to explaining the underlying causes of the issues I was facing and how the different muscles of my body were all interconnected and were contributing as well. Treatment was super comprehensive between PT sessions, stretching and breathing work, and take home exercises. Long overdue review, for the BEST Therapy Center I have been to for my pelvic floor issues. My therapist was Alexandra and you should run (not walk) to see her if you need Pelvic Floor Therapy. I'm sure she is wonderful for other ailments, however, this review is based on my experience for pelvic floor therapy. I have been to a number of different treatment centers and none encompass a comprehensive approach to your problem to improve your situation more than Beyond Basics. They do not just focus on the area of your pain and/or trouble spot, but treat all your connected areas with stretches, exercises and manual therapy. It was the most "all around approach" treatment I have received from all hospitals and therapy centers I have been to in the NYC area for pelvic floor therapy since my endometrial cancer diagnosis back in 2016. The center is clean, spacious and efficient staff. I highly recommend Beyond Basics (for all your physical therapy needs) and I highly recommend Alexandra!! (esp for pelvic floor therapy) read more

I found Stacey Futterman at Beyond Basics through a rather circuitous route ... and I'm glad I did. I came to her with what seemed like a bunch of unrelated, rather painful symptoms and out of all the physical therapists I had seen, she was the only one who actually listened, thought about what I had told her and recommended that I get an MRI of my hip to look for a labral tear. She ended up being spot on about this - and the reason that I have been able to get better. Stacey is experienced, friendly, thoughtful, energetic and really devoted to what she does. Unlike other physical therapists in women's health, she is able to think outside this area and consider a full range of possibilities when it comes to what is causing a patient's pain. I cannot recommend her highly enough. Just a note - Stacey is one of the most experienced/skilled physical therapists at this practice. I have been going to Beyond Basics for the past five months or so due to my pelvic floor issues. I was nervous at first and not sure what to expect but my whole experience has been very pleasant. The front desk receptionist, Chimka, is wonderful. She is patient while scheduling appointments for each month which takes a while and always greets everyone with a smile. Julia my physical therapist is kind, understanding and patient. I feel heard and helped. It's not an easy issue to deal with but I am glad I have help from such a knowledgeable and understanding therapist. Will recommend. I wish everyone with pelvic floor issues knew about beyond basics. I woke up 4 months ago unable to urinate and in intense pain. I was on vacation and saw the closest urologist I could find who put me on anti-inflammatories. My condition improved slightly, but I spent the next 2 months with a constant need to urinate and feeling a nagging pain in my lower abdomen. I couldn't sleep at night and was hesitant to take car rides that lasted more than 30 minutes. I went on a strict diet and tried to be as healthy as possible, but nothing seemed to help. I kept seeing different doctors and they didn't do much except tell me to be patient and hope things improve with time. After 2 months of minimal improvement, I read Amy Stein's book and started following her stretching protocol. Immediately after stretching my symptoms went away slightly, but then would return. I kept stretching 3 - 4 times /day and had some progress which made me hopeful. Eventually, I realized Amy had a clinic in NYC so I called to see if I could get an appointment. The staff was amazingly helpful and managed to get me into see someone the very next day. Unlike the cold, uncaring tone of the doctor's offices, their staff immediately made me feel as if they understood my situation and could help. After my 1st session, I felt a dramatic improvement in my symptoms. I was far from 100%, but at least I could notice a difference. I was told it'd take 2 months before I noticed a major change, but within 1 month of treatment I was 95% better. My pain went away, I didn't have an urgent need to urinate and I could sleep through the night without any issues at all. My only remaining issue my pelvic muscles feel slightly tight but that continues to get better. I can't imagine a treatment facility better than beyond basics and it's unfortunate more people don't know about them. If my doctor had known about beyond basics when I first became ill it would have made a huge difference in my life these past few months. As it stands, if I didn't find them on my own I am certain I'd still be feeling horrible. I'd like to especially thank Roseanne & Dania for helping me improve so dramatically and also Alexa for helping calm my nerves while I was stressed in the waiting room and always trying to be accommodating as possible with setting up appointments that fit my schedule. read more

I highly recommend Beyond Basics! They have excellent physical therapists, the place is very nice and clean and the staff is helpful. A major difference from other places is that they have a comprehensive approach - I am dealing with chronic pain caused by multiple factors and treating only one of them or separately (back, pelvis, leg) has not been useful since they feed into each other and get me into a vicious cycle. Over the years I have worked with many PTs, all very well trained, talented, working at excellent organizations (such as Hospital for Special Surgery) and were all useful. However, my therapist at Beyond - Stephanie Stamas - is in a totally different league, I cannot find any comparison for her level of skills, devotion and commitment! I honestly think that I stay sane in the middle of all the pain just because I had her to help me! I also had several sessions with Victoria La Manna- she is also amazing, caring and extremely knowledgeable! I also highly recommend their free classes that they offer from time to time. Everyone here is very nice and highly qualified for the complex and atypical cases, as this is a highly sub-specialized area of physical therapy. I am looking forward to returning for another appointment with Michelle. I have to deduct a star for an administrative issue that's a double edged sword for any medical practice - popularity. It's great that they're doing so well, but when a treating specialist specifically asks you to return within the week and you can't get in for another three weeks, it seems like it would be wise to implement a new scheduling system so that patients can adhere to the treatments they are recommended. While this is a problem, it seems they are doing what they can with their wait list system,..which seems sort of like bull shit but actually isn't - they really do call you and move you up as soon as there is a cancellation - the appointment I was supposed to have was actually two full weeks from now. Hopefully this is a common occurrence and my next appointment will be more closely aligned to doctor's orders! read more

It's literally the #1 thing I recommend to anyone who is pregnant...get someone great like Kathryn right away. She helped me learn how to use my body for birth and also helped me throughout the recovery to get my abs and body back the way I wanted to. I learned so much and she also helped throughout my whole pregnancy to manage pain and discomfort. She was always extremely responsive and helpful, even we had to adjust to remote because of COVID. Every time she has treated me, I've had great relief-she seems to know exactly where to go, what needling needs to be done and is a kind and intuitive person as well. My experience with Fiona at Beyond Basics has been nothing but superior. Initially, she treated me for pelvic floor dysfunction due to a car accident. I have been seen by other PT's but no one compares to Fiona. Her skill set is way beyond the level of any one else. I was in so much pain when I first started that I could not imagine any relief. While I still suffer from residual issues due to a spinal cord injury, she has helped me tremendously. She has provided strategies that continue to help me. Last September I had a spinal cord fusion after several back surgeries. Fiona began treating me as soon as I was cleared for PT. Her orthopedic skill set is just as remarkable because she is a holistic practitioner. I was in such severe pain (that we both knew would ease in time), but had to be worked through. Her ability to comfort me while working through some very dark times was truly a godsend. Again, I know I will have chronic back issues, but she has helped me manage my pain, and work through awful states of depression. I am grateful to Beyond Basics because while it is clear that I live with chronic physical issues, I am now able to move forward to work on them with a Pilates instructor to strengthen and stabilize my core. This was always my goal when I started with Fiona. She and I know it will be a lifelong process of healing for me. I recommend Beyond Basics without reservation. HIGHLY RECOMMEND! If you're on the fence, do yourself a favor and go see Molly. After extensive research of PT's in the area, I decided on Beyond Basics. At 20 weeks pregnant (and a very active, fit person), I was experiencing a constant pain in my hip (SPD) so aggravating that the thought of walking made me want to cry. Knowing I might have 20 more weeks of this, I made an appointment the next day. Expensive? It's definitely an investment (depending on your benefits), but one I was able to easily justify after just one session. Molly is everything I never knew I wanted in a PT: well-educated, great listener, gentle, reassuring (I asked a lot of questions!) and what she does WORKS! After two 1-hour sessions, my pain has almost completely disappeared. I know this won't be the case for everyone, but it sure does help to find a professional that can speak about what you're feeling and is an advocate for your well-being. read more

I received physical therapy for four months from Beyond Basics after I gave birth to my daughter. On the plus side, my therapist was caring and I always felt that she prepared for our visits, particularly early on; I wasn't improving much and she tried different techniques. The old office was fine and the new office is beautiful and I never waited for my appointment and was always seen on time. What were the negatives? The front desk staff are horrible. All of my appointments were cancelled accidentally by them twice and they took no responsibility for their errors. My insurance company stopped paying and a simple authorization would have saved me thousands of dollars but because they didn't let me know, I didn't request the authorization and had to pay for several months of therapy out of pocket. When I appealed to my insurance company, they failed to provide any records despite many calls from me. When I needed the records to transfer my care, it took weeks of daily calls to get them. In person, the staff are lukewarm to snotty. If I had gotten better, my rating would be higher despite these issues but ultimately, six months later, I have the exact same problems as I did when I started therapy. After her initial increased effort, I think the therapist just went through the motions with me. At the time, I hoped that she knew what she was doing, that very slow improvements were the norm but I now realized that I wasn't really improving at all. I wish she had handed my case off to someone else within BB if she wasn't sure how to help me further. I'm about to start therapy with Renew PT and I wish I had gone with them from the beginning. Their staff have already helped so much with my insurance company and they've been incredibly professional and caring. read more

While I was there, Beyond Basics was pretty good. They worked hard, and if they were unable to help my hip problem, they did their best. However, the billing problem has been so annoying that I do not recommend other people go to them. They did not file an insurance claim for one of my three appointments, and even though my insurance company paid them four months ago, they still have not reimbursed me, despite calling 5 or 6 times. They have not been able to explain why this hasn't happened, either, even when I ask to speak to a manager. Not worth the hassle, go somewhere else. read more

Beyond Basics has been a godsend, specially my therapist Sara Paplanus! I landed at BB after HORRIBLE pelvic pain triggered by an egg retrieval. After eight, yes eight doctor visits in a two-week period I finally found a great urologist (keep reading) who diagnosed me with pelvic floor dysfunction. Here's a breakdown of the circus: - Doctor #1 / IVF Doctor - I first thought the pain was because I was sore from the egg retrieval so I waited; it started that same day. It continued so I thought the pain was because I was going to get my period. My period came and went and the pain was still there and getting worse. So two weeks after my egg retrieval I saw my IVF doctor. He ruled out a UTI (similar symptoms) and said to give it some time. - Doctor #2 / IVF Doctor #2 - I returned three days later in excruciating pain. I saw a different doctor in the practice. My uterus and ovaries looked fine, no uti, so the doctor suspects it's an orthopedic issue and suggests I see a chiropractor. - Doctor #3 / Chiropracter - I see a chiro that same day and she tells me that while I seem to have some alignment issues (more of that later) my pain is not due to any ortho issues. She suggests I see my regular obgyn. - Doctor #4 / OBGYN - I see my obgyn that same day because I was in so much pain I needed someone to help me asap. He suspects a UTI and prescribes an antibiotic for 10 days. I'm on the antibiotic and by day 6 my pain is worse and I'm at my wits end. My obgyn is out of town. - Doctor #5 / General Doctor - I explain the situation and he thinks the antibiotic I was given was not working so he switches the antibiotic. He is also going out of town that afternoon. - Doctor #6 / Urologist #1 - I'm in so much pain by this point that I can't sit, stand, pee, nothing. I see a Urologist who doesn't let me explain how it all started and what I've been told he just wants to know what are my current symptoms. He says there is absolutely no uti, it's a super strong vaginal infection and recommends monistat. I do the monistat treatment and nothing, pain is the same and it's been approximately three weeks of this. - Doctor #7 / OBGYN again - He returns from vacation, I explain what has happened since I last saw him and he suggests I see a Urologist at the same practice as the Urologist I saw a few days before. I make some research and get a recommendation from a friend of a friend. - Doctor #8 / Urologist - I see Dr. Ciara Marley at New York Urological Associates. After a quick chat and an examination she immediately tells me that what I have is pelvic floor dysfunction that was triggered by the egg retrieval. THANK YOU DR. MARLEY!!! Dr. Marley gives me a list of physical therapists and Beyond Basics was on it. They don't take insurance and it's definitely not cheap but I was desperate. Also on the list was a therapist at NY Presbyterian Hospital that did take my insurance but the next appointment was in five weeks. So I went to BB the next day and within the first appointment I could tell Sarah nailed it and knew how to help me. Within weeks my pain had subsided almost completely. Prior to this terrible episode of pelvic pain I had been dealing with pain in my right leg and buttock for four years; it started after the birth of my son. I saw several doctors, including doctors at HSS and I went through rounds and rounds of physical therapy. The pain would decrease but was still there or it would seem to go away and come back with a vengeance. I had learned to live like this. As Sarah started treating me I noticed that certain trigger points she worked on were flaring up the leg/buttock pain. Like a very complicated puzzle she was able to put all the pieces together and my leg/buttock pain is GONE. I may get a sporadic flare but now I know what exercises I need to do and it goes away. I will be forever grateful to Dr. Marley and Sarah at Beyond Basics; living in pain is draining and debilitating. Yes, BB is expensive, but if you are at your wits end it may just be the answer. I have had very positive experiences with all my therapists -- I've had 3 visits thus far. Unfortunately my Insurance (Obamacare) does not cover the outrageously expensive physical therapy sessions. Last session, I paid 280 dollars up front for therapy. When I had Blue Cross before, I still payed about 40 percent of this cost. The front desk staff is somewhat sullen in demeanor. Physical Therapy is VERY expensive -- 280 dollars is a lot of money for ONE session. I walked out dazed that I had paid so much money. Excellent services overall, but make sure you know what you are paying, and be sure that your medical insurance covers the cost -- find out as soon as you can so you don't get caught unprepared for the cost like I was. read more

Quite a few doctors had recommended Amy Stein as being the best in her field and I can say unequivocally that they were right....She takes the time to listen to all of my concerns and thoroughly explains to me what her assessment is and what the treatment plans are..nothing is rushed...Her manner is gentle, kind and compassionate in every respect and when you're going to see a physical therapist, let's face it, you're in pain and you need some empathy from your practitioner.. Amy is also very bright and resourceful...she thinks outside the box to find solutions to issues that are somewhat tricky... Another plus is that i probably wait, at the most, 5 minutes tops to be seen (this is a biggie for me since i normally wait at least 20-30 minutes to see most practitioners.) The staff at BBPT are the best! From when you walk in the front desk staff always brighten my day especially Kristen, Ruth and Chimka. I am biased towards Fiona who is incredible and one of the most caring healthcare providers I've ever met with (and Ive met with a lot). The other Pts I've met with are all very knowledgeable and great to work with as well. What really sets Beyond Basics apart is that everyone cares down to billing. Yarisa is magic. She is so good at what she does, she knows the answer to every insurance question or she'll find it out. She make insurance painless for the patient which is nearly impossible with the American healthcare system. read more

I have been working with Riva and can honestly say a few weeks into my physical therapy I feel so much better. I instantly felt comfortable talking about my pain with her and she is so positive and encouraging. This place is amazing - I went every week for quite a few months and the desk staff was always super helpful and cheerful. MOST importantly, my therapist Molly Dennis is THE BEST. She made me so comfortable, followed up on email, was always available, and designed a program for me that not only was do-able but EFFECTIVE.
