Willow Studios - Parking lots

Willow Studios

Villain's Tavern is HUGE on Yelp... so if you've been to Villain's and saw the large warehouse in…read morethe adjacent parking lot... then you have feasted your eyes on Willow Studios: a 100,000 sq foot warehouse-converted studio building. Willow Studios' website boasts and features photos of elaborate standing sets (this means sets which are already built-in and don't require set designers or set dressers-- think "pre-made") such as jail cells, kitchens, loft apartments, showers, etc; and also contends to having many props and furniture available for production use. Well... I was here for a very long music video shoot from 7pm-5am with multiple set-ups and since I had one of lead roles, I saw many aspects of the building and let me tell you: it is not like the website demonstrates. It IS very spacious and does have some of these standing sets but they are somewhat shabby and still require a set designer to spruce it up in a major way. The props and furniture are outdated, not matching, and basically just look like a garage or attic with old furniture. The "basement" standing sets which means the actual warehouse, is creepy and looks like the set of the "Saw" movies so it's great if you are seeking such production space. The ceilings however, don't provide proper set-ups for a lighting grid. It is very relaxed though and there isn't any studio personnel or up-tight folks trying to invade your shoot and boss people around. Willow is ultimately an abandoned warehouse building which you can rent out for your production at leisure. Plus, there is a Thai boxing studio on one of the floors, so you can always bust in on the class if you need an extra for a boxing scene.

I didn't get a chance to venture through probably even a quarter of the rooms because I'm certain that I would have gotten lost, died, and become an interesting fixture to the studio. I think the biggest pitfalls are that because there are so many sets, a couple of them are not quite up to par. And another issue which is only an issue in this generation, is that there is no cell or data services available in parts of the studio. This can sometimes hold production for a few precious minutes. Overall a wicked fun space with a lot of options and not a lot of supervision. Check it out for yourself.

True Vision is a fully appropriate name for this excellent sound stage since it was instrumental in…read moremaking our vision come true. My writing partner and I won a free day of shooting at TVE via the Hollywood Comedy Shorts Fest. When Danny Davalos, the manager, gave us a tour, one of the 1st things he said was: "Tell me about your film and what I can do to help." This sincere desire to help us realize our vision, and Danny's follow-through that backed it up several times, is what puts this place several notches above being just a top tier professional facility. One of the selling points for getting cast/crew to work pretty much for free was the fact that we were filming in an actual sound stage. Our DP had shot there before and was happy to do so again. Now that we've shot there, we feel the same way. Also, Danny spins great tunes while the crew sets up/breaks down equipment, so thumbs up for musical tastes as well. They've got a huge space, great lighting packages, a suspended dance floor, and a staff that actually cares about your project. I don't even know how many projects we have used True Vision for. They are the first people I call. (No, I don't work for them. They've just given me the most extraordinary service, that I can't even say enough good things about them!)

Long Haul Films - Tom Dowler & Melissa Dowler, owner/operators of Long Haul Films.

After a month of watching endless videographer website videos for hours on end into the wee hours…read moreof the morning ... and I mean ENDLESS and for HOURS - we finally happened upon Long Haul Films through an old elementary school friend's wedding video post. We didn't know what we were looking for - we didn't really know labels or styles for videography - but we did know as soon as we watched 3-4 videos from each website whether it was what we were looking for or not. When we stumbled upon Long Haul's website, each video impressed us more than the last - each made us tear more than the other (and we didn't even know the couples! THAT'S how you know they're good) - and we were smitten. I don't know if this is considered an insult or not in the videography world - but it's not to me - their style reminds me a little like The Hills (MTV) cinematography (and some friends who watched the video commented on the same and they LOVED that about it!) Anyone around my age will know what I'm talking about - it's a little documentary and a little drama/flair. It didn't feel so cliche like other wedding videos I had seen, trying to be super dramatic and over the top artistic so that it felt fake - and they didn't try to make your wedding something it wasn't. It was real... the colors were rich... you felt like you were there at the couples' wedding and the team at Long Haul understood what was most important about the day. What more could you ask for? Well, I guess an awesome couple and amazing team. They made us feel so comfortable and got us to loosen up (we can be quite awkward once cameras are on us - as we unfortunately found out during our engagement photoshoot haha.) We even shot our "Love Us' Film - which was so unique . A lot of couples will pay for "same day edits" which are great.. but we wanted something different and something that would tell a different story than our trailer later on would tell. The Love Us film was a short interview style film that we showed at the beginning of dinner at the wedding - guests LOVED IT and we had so many compliments! Friends even asked for business cards from them that evening because they loved it so much. The same was said of our wedding trailer that we received earlier this week -- tons of compliments and guests said it was so different from any other wedding trailer they'd seen before :)

I met Tom and Melissa from Long Haul Films when we photographed a wedding at the Fairmont Copley…read morePlaza together last October. In a world of in-your face videographers I was immediately impressed with their unobtrusiveness and professionalism. I often see wedding videos from my couples and they're kind of like moving versions of the still pictures but when I saw the trailer film that Long Haul had produced I was wowed. It perfectly complimented the still pictures. I know a lot of couples are on the fence about getting a wedding film but I think if you see one of Long Hauls films not only will it tell the story of your day there's something about having footage of yourselves, parents, grandparents actually moving and talking. I would mortgage my house to have this kind of film of my grandparent's wedding day, this is a perfect investment for future generations. With all of that said, I have been thinking about doing some kind of promotional film for my photography business and so I approached Tom and Melissa about my initial ideas. They were a dream to work with. I went back and forth about a bunch of things and our schedule kept changing but they were endlessly cheerful, provided me with so much great information and helped me make a number of big decisions about what to include. Melissa conducted the interviews with my past wedding clients and she has a gift for making people feel at ease and drawing out little stories. When I saw the raw footage I was blown away. I will admit the control-freak part of me wondered how they would possibly edit it all down to tell the best story however I figured I would have complete trust. I've just seen the finished films (one main one and a number of smaller vignettes) and I am in awe. The lighting is superb, the editing is perfect, the color fantastic, the sound/music just right but most importantly Long Haul have perfectly encapsulated the message I wanted to tell my future clients. I couldn't recommend them highly enough for wedding or commercial work. I've had the pleasure of working with them on both types of film and they are just brilliant.
