Great crew, great space, plenty of street parking, lots of space and the owner is vegan! What more could you ask for.

Willow Studios' website boasts and features photos of elaborate standing sets (this means sets which are already built-in and don't require set designers or set dressers-- think "pre-made") such as jail cells, kitchens, loft apartments, showers, etc; and also contends to having many props and furniture available for production use. Well... I was here for a very long music video shoot from 7pm-5am with multiple set-ups and since I had one of lead roles, I saw many aspects of the building and let me tell you: it is not like the website demonstrates. It IS very spacious and does have some of these standing sets but they are somewhat shabby and still require a set designer to spruce it up in a major way. The props and furniture are outdated, not matching, and basically just look like a garage or attic with old furniture. The "basement" standing sets which means the actual warehouse, is creepy and looks like the set of the "Saw" movies so it's great if you are seeking such production space. The ceilings however, don't provide proper set-ups for a lighting grid. It is very relaxed though and there isn't any studio personnel or up-tight folks trying to invade your shoot and boss people around. Willow is ultimately an abandoned warehouse building which you can rent out for your production at leisure. Plus, there is a Thai boxing studio on one of the floors, so you can always bust in on the class if you need an extra for a boxing scene.

I didn't get a chance to venture through probably even a quarter of the rooms because I'm certain that I would have gotten lost, died, and become an interesting fixture to the studio. I think the biggest pitfalls are that because there are so many sets, a couple of them are not quite up to par. And another issue which is only an issue in this generation, is that there is no cell or data services available in parts of the studio. This can sometimes hold production for a few precious minutes. Overall a wicked fun space with a lot of options and not a lot of supervision. Check it out for yourself.

My writing partner and I won a free day of shooting at TVE via the Hollywood Comedy Shorts Fest. When Danny Davalos, the manager, gave us a tour, one of the 1st things he said was: "Tell me about your film and what I can do to help." This sincere desire to help us realize our vision, and Danny's follow-through that backed it up several times, is what puts this place several notches above being just a top tier professional facility. One of the selling points for getting cast/crew to work pretty much for free was the fact that we were filming in an actual sound stage. Our DP had shot there before and was happy to do so again. Now that we've shot there, we feel the same way. Also, Danny spins great tunes while the crew sets up/breaks down equipment, so thumbs up for musical tastes as well. But I guess if you're one of their buddies or part of that community, you might get better service. I was very much interested in purchasing a camera but they made it clear to me they didn't care to do business with me. It was more so "are you gonna buy it or not?" vibe. If you know those vibes, then you know what I mean. Film cameras come in various conditions, and you must consider the possible costs to repair after purchase. One Stop's cameras are not the most pristine compared to other shops. Otherwise, I know they'd charge more. There's a new cam shop in The Grove, where the money was invested in refurbishing the cameras so their prices reflects that. If you're planning on being a customer, inquire about their cameras and see how they act. Don't let any business treat you like they're doing YOU a favor. Best of luck to all the photographers out there keeping film alive. But this is not the place for me.

I met Tom and Melissa from Long Haul Films when we photographed a wedding at the Fairmont Copley…read morePlaza together last October. In a world of in-your face videographers I was immediately impressed with their unobtrusiveness and professionalism. I often see wedding videos from my couples and they're kind of like moving versions of the still pictures but when I saw the trailer film that Long Haul had produced I was wowed. It perfectly complimented the still pictures. I know a lot of couples are on the fence about getting a wedding film but I think if you see one of Long Hauls films not only will it tell the story of your day there's something about having footage of yourselves, parents, grandparents actually moving and talking. I would mortgage my house to have this kind of film of my grandparent's wedding day, this is a perfect investment for future generations. With all of that said, I have been thinking about doing some kind of promotional film for my photography business and so I approached Tom and Melissa about my initial ideas. They were a dream to work with. I went back and forth about a bunch of things and our schedule kept changing but they were endlessly cheerful, provided me with so much great information and helped me make a number of big decisions about what to include. Melissa conducted the interviews with my past wedding clients and she has a gift for making people feel at ease and drawing out little stories. When I saw the raw footage I was blown away. I will admit the control-freak part of me wondered how they would possibly edit it all down to tell the best story however I figured I would have complete trust. I've just seen the finished films (one main one and a number of smaller vignettes) and I am in awe. The lighting is superb, the editing is perfect, the color fantastic, the sound/music just right but most importantly Long Haul have perfectly encapsulated the message I wanted to tell my future clients. I couldn't recommend them highly enough for wedding or commercial work. I've had the pleasure of working with them on both types of film and they are just brilliant.

They both have a terrific eye for light and form, and are very talented in the editing room (knew to get rid of a couple cringe-worthy moments I'd prefer not to remember :) We have a short "trailer" and a fully edited DVD with the events from the whole day complete with audio and music. Everything is edited to tell the story of the day - weaving between the two parties getting ready - the venues, ceremony, cocktails and the reception. The video is perfectly timed, and somehow concise, while capturing the weight of the whole day. It leaves you satiated yet wanting more - and never wanting to fast forward. We were hesitant to use a videographer - we didn't want to feel like we were being followed by paparazzi (not exactly my element). The day of we barely noticed them (no big spotlights or awkward interviews). A couple months after the wedding they sent us our cut to review. The spirit, laughter and the emotions of the big day were perfectly captured - we both got choked up at a few parts (and still do - again and again). I can honestly say we'll watch our wedding video on our anniversary every year. It was one of the best decisions I made planning. It's absolutely worth it.
