This place is fantastic if you want chips cheaper than what they sell in the grocery stores. The only caveat is that they have limited hours and it's hard to make a trip out there. The parking situation is also iffy, but there are usually spots. As you pull up, you can see them making the fried potatoes (in my case, it was the potato sticks) through the window and a then them being packaged! I wish they had a factory tour, but c'est la vie. I entered the store and was greeted by a security guard, and the cashiers were behind bullet-proof glass. Additionally, most of the chips and products were behind the glass, although there is a fun little display of Better Made T shirts and swag. There were so many varieties of snacks so it was difficult to order, but that fact probably saved my waistline. It was also difficult to find prices for the items. Better Made Potato Chips is a beloved Detroit institution! It was my favorite "junk food" as a kid and I still love to indulge in a bag. I was recently tasked to buy snacks for a workplace retreat. It can be difficult to decide what type of snacks to buy for a group of people that is both tasty and affordable. Luckily, Yelp saved the day when I came across Better Made's factory retail store page. The factory retail store is the best place to get the lowest prices on Better Made snacks. I bought a case of fifty 1 oz. bag of chips for only $17 (including tax). That comes out to only 34 cents per bag! Most retail stores charge double or triple that price for a single bag. Unfortunately, there is some bad news. The price for a case of fifty bags will increase to $20 starting 9/2/19, and there will be an additional price increase in 2020. I'm hoping that a case will still cost under $25. Despite the expected price increases, the factory retail store still offers the best deals, especially for bulk orders. In addition to snacks, the Better Made store sells gifts including Better Made keychains, t-shirts, and ball caps. There is a large Better Made poster photo frame to take a souvenir photo. This store is a must for any fan of Better Made snacks and visitors wanting souvenirs of a local company that has been around since 1930. read more

I love, love, love these chips and have been eating them for 40 years. Red Hot BBQ are the best! When I moved from Michigan to Georgia, they became hard to get but would pick some up at the factory when I made the trip back or have others bring when they visited. When they started offering shipping, I was able to order in by the case. They now offer in some other states and the company has been great about connecting me with distributors so that I can find exact locations. I even sought out a store in a specific casino in Las Vegas to get these while on a business trip. With the stay-in-place order, I can't get out to pick up so have started having them shipped again. Shipping is a bit high but not overpriced since it is a large box and has to go ground delivery. Chips are always packaged appropriately and arrive in great shape, delivery is fast, and communication is frequent. One day, I hope to see these chips in every store. read more

This is by far one of the best chips anywhere! Not because I'm a Detroiter, it's just straight up truth! I haven't enjoy a chip so much forgetting how could this chip really is when one of our daughters sent some to her mom. Mom cracked a new bag of the New Lightly Salted Bettermade Chip, and its not too hard like a kettle chip or too thin like that major brand, but just a perfect chip. I use our Pepsi/Frito Lay money to buy us Better Mades. This is simply the best chip ever. Never stale, with good potato taste, happy grease and perfect amount of salty crunch. Good for you? Nope. Better Maid chips were my first choice but not any more. The hot chips are almost same as plain chips sweet heat and bbq, are hotter chips. You no longer can open a bag of better maids and get a full size chip, they are all broken the entire bag is almost crumbs. It's a shame to see a business that's been around this long give up. Better Made Chips should be renamed "Best Chips" because they are. I grew up on these bad boys and I was shocked to know outside of Michigan are hard to find. We went to the factory. It has orginal signs and orginal factory from 80 years ago. (its their 80th anniversary)...okay, its not 80 years old, but the chips are. The factory is old. There is no tour. Or parking lot. Just a small U shaped area where customers make spots. As you walk toward the front door you can see the chips rollin up on convayor belts and a guy in a hairnet. The front door has bars on it. You walk in into a small area with some historic chip stuff on display in cases. You then face a huge bulletproof wall/counter with the nicest ladies waiting to help you behind the glass waiting to help you. They have a wall of every chip flavor/type you could image. We bought anything we've never seen in a store. All fresh! Rainbow Chips Salt and Peppeer Sacilian Chips Hot Chips And Better Made Chocolate Covered Prezels. I got two shirts for $10 each and the bags of chips were regular prices from .99 cent - $3.00 a bag. We slide our cash under the slot and then in the safe bulletproof revolving transfer door, we got our delcious chips. I love historic local stuff that is still around, its not glamous, and there is absolutely nothing "disney" or touristy about this place or 'new' about this location. I pray that this place never shows up on Unwrapped or Guy Fieri shows up because you'll just ruin it. I've unwrapped it for you, eat the chips and get out and continue to support local business and share this historic Detroit product with your friends and family. I'm beginning to feel like Peterman from Seinfeld I was introduced to Better Made by my Aunt Rosemary. She knew her chips and like me loved her food. That was 1963. Until 2000 I lived in Michigan and always had access to Better Made. Then came the day I moved to Toledo. Toledo is a funny place because it is so close to Michigan that there are people who still like the University of Michigan even though they live in Ohio. Some stores carry Better Made and Faygo. I had a paying passenger going to Metro one night. 100 dollars in my pocket. He was from Philadelphia, and we started talking about food. Then he told me he could use something to eat. It was 2am, nothing open but gas and gos and 7-11s. I got off the freeway and drove into Monroe MI. There was a small store. I went in and bought 2 bags of Better Made plain. Gave one to the guy in back along with a Faygo red pop. He said that he had never eaten anything like them. I earned a big tip that night. Better Made has it right. There used to be many brands in the D to choose from. New Era, Superior and Cabana to name three. Better Made has survived the demise of these other brands. Only one other chip is made here but they are a distant second. There are addictions. Booze,Sex, cocaine. Heroin. Better Made. Better Made may be the worst. Yes, I am an addict, and an unrepentant one at that. Better Made Sweet BBQ is the drug of choice. Nothing like them and fortunatly they come in big bags. Until recently, I didn't think much about Better Made chips because I grew up with them. It was the cheaper brand, therefore it was the kind my family bought. As a young adult, I suppose I thought that I ought to buy the national brand potato chip because I could afford it. I didn't eat chips that often, anyway, so it didn't matter. Like so many thoughtful people, I've developed a recent interest in supporting my local economy. This impulse coincided with my loudly ticking baby-making clock. And when it's that time of the month, there's nothing I crave more than chips and dip. Between my locavore tendencies and some really intense cycles, I've become addicted to Better Mades. There is no greasier, saltier or more delightfully crunchy chip, no better accompaniment to French onion dip. How good are Better Made chips? They're so good I have them ship me the chips to Coruscant (which looks eerily like Seattle....). How good are they? They're so good that when I open a bag of them and take in a deep breath, the modulator on my outfit makes it sound like I'm having an orgasm...and I'm not entirely certain that I'm not. How good are they? They're so good that I can sit through Episode 1 while eating a bag of them and still be in a good mood at the end of the movie. How fat is your mamma? You're mamma's so fat that the Deathstar swerved to avoid her and ran out of gas. Wait, what? Oh yeah, chip review.... Anyhow, these things are just my all-time favorite snacks. They're almost always cooked to complete perfection, just enough salt on them, the absolute exact thickness for optimum enjoyment and to avoid air bubbles in the chips like Lay's. I honestly don't know whether it's the plain, the sour cream and onion, the bbq, or the ultra hot ones I prefer - it's like picking out an attack droid, they're all just so shiny and wonderful. I really wish they would expand to national distribution, but it doesn't appear they have any interest in that whatsoever. The recession has struck us all, and the Empire simply doesn't have the funds for me to fly out there every week to re-supply. As mentioned above, I have them shipped to Seattle, but I end up paying more to the UPS guy than I do for the chips themselves. Absolutely worth it, in my opinion, but that money could go to re-stocking the Turtle Wax for my helmet... Post-Edit: It seems they've changed their formula. I grew up on these chips. I remember when they came in a large tine the size of a hatbox and the chips still taste as good as they did back then. The barbecue is spicy and the Waves stand up to dips!
