Of course it helps if the range they sell is good and here it's terrific. Masses of fish - that's an obvious thing to say - but throw in a large range of shellfish, both fresh and frozen, and you have a truly outstanding stall. Once the people who run it get to know you they'll keep various cuts of fish to one side if you shop regularly, and if you have a particular requirement they will do whatever they can to fulfil it. I travel to the market every couple of weeks and the trip to Myers stall is always one of the highlights as everyone is so nice. This is my pick of the fish and seafood stalls in the market by some distance.

They are happy to take special requests and order in. Just because their display is smaller doesn't mean they lack in stock! My one drawback with all these fish stalls in a row is that it can be difficult to work out which is which, unless you step back and look at the signs. Neverthless, despite being flanked by Bethells, they stand their ground and do a good job!

Kirkgate Market sells everything you could possibly want to buy. It is great for everyday fruit…read moreveg, meat, cheese or fish shopping. These stalls have a great range - every part of an animal is still sold at the butchers, the cheese selection competes with up market cheese shops. You can buy basic bread, visit an East European speciality stall or purchase from an artisan baker. Everyone knows that Marks and Spencer's started in Leeds market but to find out a bit more you can sometimes take a Market History tour or a longer Leeds Food History Tour that ends at the market (both bookable on Eventbrite). After walking and shopping you will be hungry. The market offers an amazing array of food options from the upmarket Owl Restaurant to street food stalls from around the world. The bottom area of the market is laid out with benches to eat whatever you buy from the stalls. My favourites are the mackerel sandwiches from Mr Mackerel (only £3!), the daily thali from Manjit's Kitchen or a Tunisian bread wrap from Sweet Saeeda. You could choose food from Vietnam, Thailand, Mexico , the Middle East, Colombia, Japan, Pakistan, China or you might want to keep it local and go for a Yorkshire Pudding Wrap or fish and chips. On Saturdays you might find a record, book or vintage fair near the food stalls.

A lot of stalls inside and out. If you need something I can guarantee you would find it here!read more

You have to go look around to see what i mean but there are masses upon masses of great things in here. The staff are that lovely that they speak to you about recipes you could try and offer helpful hints and tips. I'll definitely be going back to investigate further when I'm not rushing to the theatre!

As you enter the store the decor is a fascination, with beautiful lanterns hanging overhead and a beautiful silver water globe feature in the entrance. Immediately as you go in on the left there is the fruit and veg section which offers up more exotic fruit and veg than I have ever actually seen. They had enoki mushrooms, star fruit, dragon fruit, bamboo and so much more. They had fruit that I don't even know what it is. The only description I can offer is that they reminded me of Stinky from the Moomins, only more pinkish brown than black! I'm totally going back to try them some day. As well as that they had EVERYTHING to do with traditional chinese, korean and other asian cuisines. With more noodles than you can imagine, cakes, fish, 'mochi' and so much more it is probably the most exciting place to shop for food in Leeds. I can only hope that at some point I will get to live near enough to make it my regular supermarket! My boyfriend and I have made a pact that we will go in there and put together a meal sometime and I'm going to hold him to it! A delight to shop in, but pop in just to see.

It has whole fish and parts of fish all laid out on ice for you to properly gawp at and choose which to take home for your tea (that's supper or dinner to the Southern folk in case you didn't understand). I would rather buy fresh fish from here any day than pick up a piece stuck on a polystyrene tray and wrapped in cellophane. Apart from familiar types of fish such as Pollock, haddock, cod and tuna fish you can get exciting things like oysters and crab at Ramsdens.

I put the smell of most markets down to the fish section, and what would it be without one! Whether you love it or it just makes you want to gag, I find looking at the raw selection of water creatures absolutely fascinating. Ramsdens specialises in all different kinds, with a smile, despite the pong below his nose! Be it cod, haddock, fresh tuna, swordfish or an assortment od seafood you happen to be after, they can sort you out, for a fraction of what you'd pay down your local Tesco's, or other leading supermarket fish counter. Of course, some types are rarer and therefore pricier, but you can guarantee a good bit of service to go with your uncooked dinner.

So after much consideration of when to go, I finally made a visit with my eating buddy on a Sunday afternoon. I knew what I was going to order, after browsing on their website - I wanted a big piece of steak. After a long working week, I needed a treat, so decided to go full out. I really liked the decor inside - maybe it was personal preference but it was modern and oozed class, which added to the whole dining experience. We were in a corner close to the window, and provided menus. A simple menu with steakhouse favourites always wins me over, and shouldn't be cluttered. If you want to serve good food, then specialise in a few things! As I knew what I wanted, I needed to decide which size steak I wanted to devour and I chose the 310g rib-eye steak, which is just shy of 11oz. I also chose the duck spring rolls as a starter, but requested it to be served with my main. After a reasonable wait, my food came with steady hands, and it looked really good just sitting there waiting to enter my stomach. I must say it was a fabulous steak, cooked medium, so had a little pink inside. There was a crisp exterior with soft interior, packed with meaty beefy flavour (as expected!), and I took the time to really enjoy it. The spring rolls weren't that great though. Too much pastry and not enough filling. After the steak, I decided to have a dessert. My all time favourite is warm chocolate cake with ice cream and there it was on the dessert menu, so I ordered it! The dessert was ok, chocolatey and warm, but there was something about the cake that didn't seem right to me. It was bitty. It didn't say on the menu that it was bitty. The vanilla ice cream was nice and complimented the cake. Overall it was a good experience. The service was also good and friendly and the waiters looked smart. Although it was a great main, the starter and dessert was average, so this barely managed 4 stars! If you're a meat lover, then having a steak at this place is definitely well worth it. I'll definitely make another trip and try out the other dishes on offer and maybe prop it up to 5 stars if I get a good starter and/or dessert.
