Where do I begin........no one at the desk upon arriving. got checked into Rm 106....the ac almost drowned out the truck traffic during the night. Immediately noticed and felt the high humidity in the room. Carpet was damp, very damp. Bathroom floor was sticky. I wiped part of the bathroom floor with a paper towel and turned it over to look at it......something dark on the paper. SUGGESTION: Rockport isn't far at all from Refugio....drive to Rockport and stay at any hotel there, lots of choices. The Best Western Ref'ugio has loads of things to correct. Oh, the bed was made nicely! So, if ALL you want is a nicely made bed, then the Refugio Best Western is your place! 1 star because of the nicely made bed. read more

Updated review: spoke with the GM and still hasn't apologized for the experience instead he was more worried about a video I recorded from when his employee claimed to have talked to him. I replied that the video was irrelevant due to her just stilling down talking to him, therefore he should've heard everything that she was saying. He said he didn't care about going to the hotel to address the escalated issue. I still didn't get an apology, just a charge on my bank card. Voice recording is being uploaded of our phone conversation on Facebook and we're taking this businesses Facebook account. If you value your life which I do, then listen to what they do to save money here. The backstory of this anecdote is I used to sell smoke and fire alarms. I checked in on Monday and was greeted with three chirps of the smoke alarm within 10 minutes, I made my way to the front desk and you can hear multiple other rooms having the same issue. The lady at the front desk did not really care as she seemed used to it so she offered me the chance to get a ladder and look at it myself (first red flag). Before I even did this I told her I wanted another room because it's not my job to do their job, I got another room. Would you believe me if I told you that in less than five minutes in the new room the chirp began again. I had already moved my stuff from room to room so at this point I was committed to make this thing work. I climbed up a rickety ladder and my suspicion was correct, it was an old unit and it definitely needed replacing. The next thing I know the front desk lady is knocking on my door and all of a sudden the manager, her dad or husband and son/brother barge in my room (without asking of course). I was so tired I just wanted to get this fucking ordeal over with so what happens was she sent a little skinny boy up the ladder to change the battery that I already did. I told her that I used to sell smoke alarms and I know exactly what's wrong and the unit needed replacing, not the battery. You can tell that this is their business practice because she instructed the young boy how to reset the alarm so it would work for a few days. The smoke alarms here are directly wired into the ceiling and they have a battery back up, She did not care that I educated her on how the smoke alarms work in this building but she was insistent on making the smoke alarm work for a few more days since I would be leaving and it did not matter after that. Today is Wednesday and I had just fallen asleep, I'm enjoying sleep to the best of my ability and I'm greeted to some more chirping from the fucking smoke alarm. If I was not here for work I would drive in any direction to stay away from this hotel but it's my last night here. If you are a road warrior and live out of hotels like I do for work and you happen to know a fire marshal please send them to this hotel asap. The front desk lady tonight was talking to her man out front for probably an hour, phone ringing off the hook and not a care in the world. City of Refugio needs to shut this place down and bring in some new management, not a welcoming business for the community at all. My two rooms have been both musty, dirty with a faint hint of mold to them as well. I have stayed at Best Western over the country and this might just be up for one of the worst ones out there. The fire marshal needs to visit this property and instruct them how to properly use smoke alarms so nobody gets hurt in the case that a fire were to happen here. read more

This place price gouges big time ($120+ tax) and the room was filthy. Mirrors had toothpaste splatter and food all over the floor. The chair had streaks of a mysterious snot all over it. I don't even want to guess what that was. I believe they think because there are limited rooms and it is in the middle of nowhere that they can overcharge. Keep going unless you are extremely tired. Then I would consider finding a place to pull over and sleep in my car. read more

ROACH HOTEL!! This place is disgusting!! Look truly are deceiving, I was planning on giving this place 3 to 4 stars just because it looks nice, but wow was I wrong. I don't care how nice the room looks (yes it looks just like the other photos posted) when you have roaches, and this many roaches to say the least, in one room with no food in it, there is a MASSIVE issue!! Do not stay here!! Do not come here!! I don't need to comment/review anything else, ie, room service, customer service, breakfast, none of it, because the roaches are a deal breaker PERIOD. ROOM 111. The floors had obviously been wet before. You could feel it and smell it. The covers on the bed were super thin even with getting the extra one out. Twice while Laying there watching TV it smelled as if a skunk came into the room and sprayed. We even went out to see if there was a skunk by the ac outside. Not the hotels fault but the people upstairs stomped around late at night and early in the morning. Just not a good experience at all. And we paid $192 for ONE night. read more

You don't have many choices in Refugio, and this is the newest place in town. I've stayed at this location for a few years, and the condition of the hotel has declined over time. Sure, wear and tear will do that (as well as a hurricane in 2017) but I'm talking about cleanliness in the rooms and common areas. The bathrooms are never really that clean, and I've shared the room with a few bugs that weren't invited. The TV's work in some rooms but not others. Breakfast is basic but is reliable. The exterior is being repainted this season, and there are new carpets in the rooms and hallways, but if you pay close attention this place isn't that clean. That being said, I've stayed at other places in Refugio and it is definitely the best of the bunch. read more

Nice hotel, seems new. Rooms were clean but had to change one of the rooms. Smelled like mold and AC was moldy. Receptionist was very nice and changed rooms. Breakfast is average. Price was as expected (80-100) since it is the nicest hotel in town. Stayed here for 3 nights. read more

The front desk clerks were nice. The room was small, dark, and the bed was squeaky. Nothing more positive or negative to say.

Booked on priceline for a cheaper rate. I have always used priceline and had the experience that they book you in a certain type of room and it is up to the hotel if they want to change rooms or not. I called a ahead of time to ask about 2 beds instead of King since we had 3 people. The man told me I had to call priceline. I called priceline and was told no it is up to the hotel. I had a 5 hour drive so thought I would wait till I checked in to ask again. Got to the hotel and of course it was like talking to a brick wall. This is a Sunday night and I counted a total of 4 vehicles in the parking lot. So surely they are not sold out and could have accommodated us if they wanted. Waited several minutes at check in because printer was not working. Told me I needed to come back and sign in the morning. Just not happy with the customer service and will not be back ever. read more

A great hotel to visit if you want to commit suicide. One of the grimmest newish hotels I've run into. The lighting is all daylight compact florescent so the rooms glow brightly blue! For a town in the middle of nowhere, $110 bucks a night for a walk in is a bit over the top imho. The room comes with 2 hand towels, 2 regular towels and a bathmat. The one thing that is OK here is the internet, which is adequate. The air conditioning works and the water is hot. read more

We usually stay at this hotel each time as a huge family when we have our family reunions. This was the first time we had a unpleasant and disturbing experience at the hotel. We got in late Friday night and left early Saturday morning to attend our family reunion festivities so we didn't notice anything nor think anything of it. My husband woke up Saturday morning with whelps on his face and since we are in the country we just assumed it was misquotes or some other insect from the country. This was NOT the case. We got in late Saturday night went to bed and I woke up Sunday morning with rashes and fresh bites on my body. I have very sensitive skin so i tend to break our worse than most. I started to look on the bed and I saw these little black specs on the bed so I used a magnifying glass to see what it was and it was little bugs. I instantly called the manager on duty to make him aware of the situation. He took pictures and I also showed him where they were on the window seal. He tried to say the bugs in the window seal were some kind of "flying ant" but clearly it was dead bee bugs caked in the corner. He offered to refund one payment which is fine however I requested we get a full refund due to the severity of my rashes and bites on my body. We got to the front desk to check out and get our refund, he mentioned that he could not give a full refund until the pest control comes and inspects the property. I'm completely fine with that but when I asked him for his Manager information he refused to provide that information and directed me to contact corporate information that was posted on the wall. I wasn't very happy about not getting a full refund so I told the director of our Family reunion who usually sets up the group blocks when we have our reunion and he goes to say "IF IM GOING TO TELL PEOPLE, HE IS NOT GOING TO REFUND ANYTHING" and "WE WILL NO LONGER BE ABLE TO BOOK ROOMS AT THE HOTEL". The disrespect from the manager on duty was uncalled for and rude. I go on to tell some of my family members to check the room for bed bugs and the also reported same issues and will be filing complaints as well. The manger states that they have NOT had any issues since the hurricane that recently hit the town. Clearly that is not the truth. I called the corporate office and filed a complaint and driving back to Austin Texas where I from to go to the er bc the inflammation from the bites are getting pretty bad. I feel VIOLATED, I'm having insane anxiety and I keep thinking I feel something crawling on me. This is a health risk and something they should take VERY serious because is gross, unsanitary and let's not mention the anxiety I feel about taking my belongs home. I tried to be polite and professional about the issue because is a hotel and these things Happen. The way the manager handled it today was very uncalled for and disrespectful. For my job I stay in hotels over 150 nights a year. This night was the worst in a decade. Since Hurricane Harvey hit, this is the only hotel open in Refugio. They have doubled their room rate ($150) to gouge the market, and they do not care about their guests. I checked in and the air conditioner was broken in my room. I asked to change rooms and I was told I could get a refund. As their were no other options in town I stayed. Went to the restroom, the toilet was backed up. I called again to ask where I could use a toilet and I was told to leave because I complain too much. While packing the hotel called the police to come throw me out! Manager refused to give me his name for refund and to complain to corporate so I attempted to take his photo, he slapped my phone out of my hand and broke the case (in front of the cop). I have a video of the entire ordeal and I was told he would get a citation for assault but who knows. Still haven't received a refund. A 1 Star in Mumbai would be better than this dump, the smell of curry would be similar. read more

Locks on the doors didn't work so the lady at the front desk had to unlock it each time we needed to get inside. The lights were really odd, it was bright fluorescent blue, but was still pretty dim. Saw beetles, flys, and silverfish in the room. My brother said that in his room the ac unit was making a loud screaming noise! And that there was a leak in the bathtub so after his shower there was water all over the floor. When we got in the car the next morning he had itchy bug bites all over his legs. I will not stay at this hotel in the future. The free breakfast is trouble and greasy. The rooms are ok however the biggest problem I had was when I returned to my room and the door was opened. I had place a do not disturb tag on the door prior to leaving my room that morning, but when I returned in the afternoon the tag was still on the door but the door was opened. I called the front desk and asked the clerk to have the manager call me and she said she would contact him. I have heard nothing from them since. Nothing appears to be missing from the room but having my security breached is intolerable. I will stay away from this place. read more

By far the best hotel in town. Do not stay at any other hotel in Refugio or you will regret it. This place is clean, offers a good breakfast, and reasonable prices. And they have a pool! Only recommendation would be for them to change the recipe for their biscuits. They are usually pretty hard. read more
