St. Michel, my first mistake) and turn right at first block to Rue de St Andres des Art. It is NOT on the street itself (my 2nd mistake) but in passageway Couer de Commerce between #59 and 61. Once you enter, the shop is 10+ meters on your left. It is indeed tiny but a paper lover/writer's haven: journals, day timers, cards, pens & accessories, wooden bookmarks, postcards, wrapping paper et al. My favorite purchases included separate leather cases (holds one pen each) - I got three in red, blue and orange each - a sheave of wrapping paper in different designs and a wood bookmark. Many of the products are beautifully designed and handmade; the owner will tell you which country they are from or made in, The items I bought were from in Italy, India and France. Atelier Lejeusne is a totally hidden artisan paper shop located on a side street off the Canal St Martin. I'd passed in front of it a dozen times but never went inside, until today, and it totally blew my mind to bits. They sell the most adorable cards and memo pads with raised ink stamps that are produced by hand in the atelier in the back of the shop. As I was freaking out about the selection of cards featuring baby elephants, black kitty cats, owls, clovers, ladybugs, etc, the adorable owner even offered to show me the studio where the cards were made. I had to take a rain check since I was in a rush, but how cool is that? According to their awesome website, the Atelier is the only one of its kind in Paris to use a hand stamp press. In their video montage you can see the way the artisan printer hand paints each stamp before pressing them onto paper to produce a raised embossed effect. In a subtle, not-so-subtle sequence you see the types of work they've done for various clients, including Francis and Sophia Coppola! Can't think of a better celebrity endorsement!

The biggest fabric store, we've ever seen, it's a place where you can spend a couple of hours just…read morebrowsing and listening. We came on a wet Tuesday, and only realized how big it is, once we came. The map directions will direct you to the main store, which consists of 3 stories, each with a very big footprint. We didn't really find anything we liked, so ended up leaving disappointed after a while. Once we got outside though, we noticed another door next door, also called Marche Saint Pierre, but this time with Dreyfus in the name. This is even a bigger store, with 6 levels of fabrics, all connected through stairs and elevators. They had similar fabrics as the previous, but ended up finding something that we wanted. Once we got the attention of a consultant, he quickly cut a meter off of the bolt. It ended up costing under 20€, and was easy to pack away. Paying using a credit card was easy, and we were on our way.

You can't do much with under a yard, but at 3 meters the possibilities are pretty expansive. Sacrés Coupons has been around forever and have a couple locations in the same area. There's always good deals and interesting materials. It's not a grab bag of discarded/ugly/icky materials, but it does feel like organized chaos inside. I picked up several interesting and great quality coupons here for a great price. My mom used to drag me here in the 90s and I'm pretty sure I still have some of that vintage yardage in storage! Also, for whatever reason, it feels like silk (soie) and wool (laine) is so much cheaper here than stateside. So if that's your jam, check it out on your fabric adventures in Paris. Coupons are much less intimidating for non-French speakers because you don't have to figure out cutting and all that, just grab the piece and go pay.
