Because of them, our sadness was not compounded by stress or frustration. They helped us display photos, collect cards, greet visitors and just enjoy the company of our friends and family. At no turn did anyone decline our requests or try to upsell us on anything; honestly, I was able to forget that The Elms is a business at all. Within a week afterward, Michael gave us digital copies of the guest book (sorted alphabetically) and a digital photo of every card that came with a flower arrangement, making it easy for us to thank everyone who had expressed condolences. I don't wish for anyone to need the services of a funeral home, but when that time comes, I emphatically recommend The Elms.

It is very intimate, as they only have one viewing room, so there is no intermingling with other families, the place is all yours. So when my mother passed away, we decided to go to The Elms. Michael R. was our Director and his professionalism and knowledge left my family at ease that everything would go smoothly. He communicated to us everything that would happen and when, and walked us through the process. He was at our beck and call and helped us with decisions we didn't know we had to make, and I am forever grateful to him for this. Karen C. was present on the day of the funeral, in addition to Michael and besides her caring nature, she provided services that made us extremely happy (mom's make up). I cannot say enough good things about The Elms and will continue to give them our family business. During the most difficult time of my life, The Elms staff was by our side and again, we are beyond grateful that they made this experience one mom would have been proud of. I don't care to "shop around a dozen funeral homes" in the City and Suburbs, or how many funeral homes someone owns. I know where my family and I will continue to patronize.

I have never dealt directly with the owners except in conversation here and there and am in no hurry to make my funeral arrangements, but it's a part of life, so here it is.... This is where I would want my wake/funeral to be held. The employees/owners are nothing but professional. When people are here, it's not for anything good, but they make it their top priority to make sure everything is handled in a professional manner. They realize that it's not supposed to be a good time, but they don't make you feel uncomfortable for crying in their hall ways, if necessary. People pass on and this is where we will see them for the last time. It's nice to know that they care. They have recently remodeled their kitchen area and it's very nice. This is where the boys tend to hang out when we're here. There is a small fridge, sink, plenty of counter space, coffee/tea, etc. We are usually here for 6+ hours when we are here and you have to eat, so it's nice to have a place to do so. They have two rooms. We have been in the main room for most of our needs that I can recall. It's very clean, doesn't smell funny like some other places (yes, I'm putting that out there because they deserve credit for that), and comfortable. They have the ability to put the obituary on their webpage along with all arrangements and we have found that sending out that link is the fastest/easiest way to pass the info along to friends/family that need the details. Technology is wonderful, isn't it? There are plenty of nearby restaurants for a bite before or after you are here and I have a tendency to end up across the street at my fave bar in Elmhurst: Spring Inn. And after years of spending time at Spring, I can tell you that many people make their way over there from the funeral home at some point. Who doesn't need a cocktail after being here?

Here is a list of the things they did that were extremely unprofessional and unsympathetic. - As I was saying my final goodbyes to mi Tia: a tall, white, male manager with white hair insisted on interrupting my time with her to try and "clean up her jewelry" to give to the immediate family. - As we were reminiscing with fond memories de mi Tia, he interrupted someones story by reminding us that it was 7:55 and that the family had only paid to be there until 8. - As someone was in the bathroom before leaving, one of the staff members pounded on the door of the bathroom to get them to leave as soon as possible - The staffs overall demeanor felt closed off and rude. Even during their interactions with the family, and the blatant displeased reactions to said interactions, it felt as though they either couldn't pick up social cues, or simply didn't care enough to hide their urgency. Though I am understanding that the job of a funerary home director holds a heavy weight on ones conscience and requires a steadfast demeanor, it also requires empathy, compassion, and patience, none of which I felt during this wake. Though I was dealing with the grief of my Tia, the treatment of the staff made me feel as though our grief was nothing but a paycheck to them. Though this may not be everyone's experience, please keep in mind that how this establishment treats the grief of others isn't subjective to one family.

As you walk toward the viewing parlors, there are short halls that lead back to a cross hall where the lounge and restrooms are located. There are stained glass windows along the hall and also in Parlor A. With the sun shining through, it was quite peaceful. There is a small parking lot located on the west side of the building and then another parking lot located across the street on the east side. Take precaution when exiting the lots onto Cermak Road.
