The staff at An Angels Destiny was beyond helpful and courteous and I needed them to be tomorrow. I have been looking for a reasonable quality place to order my brothers headstone. I have dealt with Troost in the past and have nothing bad to say but I needed a better deal without sacrificing quality. I finally stopped into angels and I am so glad I did. Haciel and especially his female assistant helped me greatly. They set up a payment plan and got my stone ordered. I am extremely happy with the service and product I received. Honest people to do business with.

We met with Lisa Tomlin at their Palatine office and she could not have been more helpful in creating our headstone, just the way we wanted. It took about 12 weeks for the stone to be delivered and while it was a little strange to see it in place with our names on it, it's comforting to know that it's one less thing that our kids will need to be concerned with. When my Mom passed, my sister and I made an appointment to select a headstone. I was impressed when I had called to make an appointment as I spoke to Chris Lee and he was friendly and informative. We met with him on 3/25/18. He was very helpful in giving us information on the type of headstone that was required for the area where my mother's grave site was, the catalogs as well as the sample headstones that was in his office to choose from. With his help, we chose a headstone we were really pleased with that was regal and epitomized my mother's classiness. In the year of the pandemic, my granny passed in June, 2020. Since we had a good experience prior, we decided to come back to this business to get a headstone for her grave site. We met with Steven Bloom on 8/1/20. He was friendly, took time to show us our options and we selected a different headstone that reminded us of her personal style. We paid for the headstone in full (you have the option to make a partial payment) and waited to hear updates on our order. More than two and a half months passed by and I hadn't heard anything regarding our fully paid order so I reached out to Mr. Bloom for an update. I talked to him via phone in October and he remembered me and the order and told me he would call me back that day to provide update details. I didn't get a call back so I called the next day and left him a voicemail as he was out of the office. I still did not hear from him after a few days. It was then that I called again and asked to speak to a manager. I was transferred to a vice president and explained the situation. He looked into it and was honest about what happened which I appreciated. Our order unintentionally got lost in the shuffle. With the pandemic and tons of orders, an error occurred. Sir V.P. apologized for the non-communication of who we dealt with concerning this order and the error. He got right on getting our order processed immediately. He communicated with me by email and by phone as to the developments. I appreciated his willingness to be empathetic to my family on how important getting this headstone done and done right. He was professional at the same time. By the time the headstone was finished, unfortunately it was too late in the year for it to be placed so Sir V.P. said that he would follow up with me in March to see if Glen Oaks Cemetery had placed the headstone. He kept his word and called me on March 1 - the headstone hadn't been placed yet but he would check again and get back to me. My granny's b-day was March 6 so I decided to go out to the cemetery to visit her. I was happy to see that it had looked like they had just placed the headstone either that day or the day before. I personally reached out and thanked Sir V.P. for all of his help and assistance in getting this headstone completed because it was really important to our family. I highly recommend this business. Their monument selection is HUGE! Thank you Peter Troost, appreciate your establishment.

Extremely grateful for the tremendous guidance of their #1 employee Chela Q. she saw forward that everything came out smoothly during our heartbreaking moments. We unexpectedly lost my mother in law and since starting the process with them, they completely made the experience so much more bearable. The communication and understanding Chela provided was amazing. They provided us with all the information needed and helped us through all of our questions. That helped alleviate the pain making the process much smoother. We couldn't have chosen a better funeral home. Unfortunately sad to know that they know how to treat not appreciate their employees due to the arrogance of the owner Anthony. It looks like the place runs beautifully without his presence. If it would have not been for all of Chela help along with Becky I guarantee we would have gone with our option 2. When I lost my mom recently, I was not sure I was up to handling all there is to do to say goodbye…read more Mom had purchased her final resting place when my dad passed but it was up to me and my brothers to worry about getting a casket, flowers, mass cards and so on. Thankfully Conboy helps take you thru the process step by step and without ever leaving the building. More than that, they treat you with compassion and kindness. Matthew (who is an owner) must have thought I was crazy because I could not decide what outfit to put on my mom ( she would haunt me for the rest of my days if she did not like my choice) and kept asking his opinion if he thought it was ok. My own brothers were frustrated with me but Matthew was very kind and helpful (especially when his sister, who is also an owner and just as kind, helped me make the final decision). To top off the horrible weekend of losing my mom and getting ready to say goodbye to her, my 9 year old daughter breaks her ankle the night before the wake. Ugh. Matthew told me to bring my moms wheelchair and put my daughter in it and made sure there was room in the lounge for her to move around. The day of the funeral was 2 days before my daughters birthday and Matthew grabbed a bunch of roses from all the arrangements that friends were so kind to send and fashioned a beautiful arrangement as a birthday gift for her. She felt so grown up getting roses from a handsome man. LOL However, more than that, it put a smile on her face ( after losing her Nonna and breaking her ankle only days before her birthday is hard for an adult let alone a child). Another thing that Matthew did was this: My daughter's leg was hurting her the night before the funeral. She was supposed to keep it up but she insisted on being with Nonna the whole wake. So of course she was up all night in pain. I decided to let her sleep and rest the ankle at home with her dad and went to the funeral alone. When it was time for the funeral prosession I went with my Aunt and Uncle because I did not want to be alone and I was worried for my uncle who has lost his sister. Apparently, immediate family should be at the front of the prosession but we were somewhere near the end (it did not occur to me or my uncle and we did not mind as long as mom was first). After the mass but before the cemetery Matthew found out and would not let anyone go until me, my Uncle and my Aunt moved to the front. It is in the small things that we find compassion, kindness and amazing people. The Conboys are AMAZING people. Thank you for literally getting me thru the hardest week of my life and giving my mom the beautiful, elegant goodbye she truly deserved. I will forever be grateful.

There are levels of ineptitude and greed on the part of their successor. This made my most recent experience very disappointing in comparison to how the original couple ran this business. We could barely get anyone to take our calls and seemingly had to do a cat and mouse chase with Rorry the director. Then we were overcharged in fees and surcharges that were not outlined until AFTER my mother's remains were transported to their facility. They were not clear as to when the flowers would be displayed. Lastly, we were delayed at the burial site because no one on staff took the time to tell the cemetery that we were on our way. At one point during the burial, I noticed the driver looking at his watch as if he had somewhere else to be. Who does that? Again, any delay was their fault. I wouldn't take a dead goldfish to Wallace's in the future, let alone a loved one. This business is riding on the reputation of its founders who are now deceased, but they apparently took professionalism and compassion with them. In its place is a director who is still wet behind the ears and his wife whose side hustle is printing the programs and providing the flowers. It's no longer about compassion and care but getting the most money for each related service. This is a disservice to the people who still go to them thinking that the personal touches of the late Vernon and Gladys are still evident in their present-day operations. If my disappointment is not a wake-up call to the owner, then hopefully it encourages would be patrons to reconsider.

Queen of Heaven Cemetery & Mausoleums

When I came to Chicago years ago, Mt. Carmel was the cemetery I most wanted to visit (if…read moreinterested, check out my review). Following that visit, I crossed the street and entered Queen of Heaven, a more modern (consecrated in 1947) resting place consisting of 470 acres. As I've noted in other reviews, I've always been fascinated by organized crime history, and Chicago's organized crime is an integral and prominent (if often unwanted) part of that city's history. I always try to conduct myself respectfully and discreetly in cemeteries, knowing these are holy places where people come to mourn. The overwhelming majority of the "permanent residents" of Queen of Heaven were honest, hard-working people who tried their best to make their way in the world. The cemetery boasts the largest Catholic mausoleum in the world, and it's indeed an impressive structure, a work of architectural splendor. Inside, I found the vaults of Tony Accardo, perhaps the most successful and powerful Mafia boss in history; Paul Ricca; Sam Battaglia; and Fiore Buccieri. I had a camera with me but I didn't take any pictures. Why? Because there were security cameras everywhere and I didn't want anyone to misinterpret my purpose, and think I was being "disrespectful." The Chicago mob was unique in being surprisingly egalitarian, a meritocracy (a large number of its reps in top positions were Jews, Irishmen, Greeks, Bohemians, a Welshman, etc.; their abilities counted more than their ethnicity), but they were also known for a countless number of savage "hits." I didn't actually think anyone was going to take a blowtorch to me for snapping a photo of Joe Batters' private vault. Still, I wasn't about to press my luck. Outside, it was more relaxed. I found the grave of "Mad Sam" DeStefano, a figure of particular fascination for me. Physically a cross between Fred Flintstone and John Belushi, reading about some of his "antics" had caused me to laugh out loud. He forced a court hearing for a $10 traffic ticket, had himself carried into court on a stretcher, shouting through a bullhorn, "Birmingham, Alabama, here I come...We are living in a Gestapo country...Hello to all the stool pigeons in the witness quarters..." It wasn't all laughs. FBI Agent Bill Roemer called him "the worst torture-murderer in Chicago's history." When Sam's wife Anita angered him, he kidnapped a black man walking on the street at gunpoint, and forced the man to rape his wife as punishment for his wife, who now lies buried beside him. Does she rest in peace, or does she dread the thought of the coming "Day of Judgment" when the dead rise from their graves and she has to see Mad Sam's ugly face once again? Hopefully, if there is a God, He'll spare her that. Mad Sam was shotgunned to death in 1973 while sweeping out his garage. The man believed to be wielding that shotgun is buried across the street, literally a stone's throw away. Tony Spilotro, the hitman portrayed by Joe Pesci in "Casino." The man who once squeezed a man's head in a vise until the man's eyes popped out of his head in order to extract information. On "Judgement Day," will Mad Sam see him, ignore Anita, and shout out, "You, you're the dirty ______ who shot me!" In another direction is the impressive monument to James Torello. If you read "The Exorcist," Blatty quoted a surreptitiously recorded conversation where Torello described torturing a 300-pound loan shark to death: "Jackson was hung up on the meat hook. He was so heavy he bent it. He was on that thing 3 days before he croaked...We tossed water on him to give the (cattle) prod a better charge, and he's screamin'..." I'm a non-Catholic, and Yelp is not the place to argue theological issues such as faith, grace, redemption, etc. But I couldn't help thinking about such issues as I walked around this beautiful, peaceful cemetery. Did the Catholic hierarchy really think Mad Sam "made his peace" with God in the seconds before that fatal shotgun blast? He's lying in sacred, consecrated ground. Supposedly, Spilotro asked to say a prayer (and was denied) before he was beaten to death, but does that transform a serial-killing monster into someone worthy of Heaven? As another, non-Catholic example-- "Tex" Watson, Manson's chief killer, has his own prison ministry and claims to be "saved." Is he sincere? What if he is? Someone who can stick a knife 30-something times into an 8-month pregnant woman permanently severs whatever tenuous links he may still have to humanity, as far as I'm concerned, and obviates any possibility of redemption or forgiveness. To me, that's a spiritual brokenness that can never be fixed, whether it's Tex, or Charlie, or Mad Sam, or Tony the Ant. I don't mean to sound overly harsh in discussing this cemetery...other cemeteries, religious and non-sectarian alike, have evil people buried in them...but these were the thoughts occupying me as I wandered about these peaceful acres. Maybe that's the reason I still identify as an agnostic.
