Here's what BS has right: the store is bright, clean and well merchandised. The inventory is updated, alterations can be made on premises, salespeople are helpful and not pushy. Here's what BS has wrong: management and customer service. And these are big when the price tags are equivalent to high end department stores where you can also find the same amenities. BS also has an extreme ALL SALES FINAL return policy. Much like other reviewers, I had a dress special ordered for my son's wedding. I had three fitting appointments. At each store visit, my salesperson, Rocky, styled me with sportswear for the wedding weekend and beyond. By my last appointment, I had spent almost triple the price of my MOG gown, but I was pleased to have supported a female-owned small business, and I told the owner, Sara, exactly that. . When I left the store my MOG gown fit perfectly. Rocky and Sara packed it for me, and I was assured they had sold lots of dresses by this manufacturer, and the dress would travel well. That was not the case. Getting dressed for the wedding I discovered the length of the gown had "grown" approximately three inches. I walked my son down the aisle with the skirt portion hiked up under my armpits. As the day progressed, so did the length. Instead of the flowy, sequin top I dreamed of, rolls of fabric are apparent in every picture, as I hiked the skirt higher. I made a follow-up appointment at BS. No one argued that the dress had "grown." Sara immediately told me she wasn't giving me a refund. I asked her to contact the manufacturer on my behalf. She refused, arguing that the material was not defective and insinuating I had worn different shoes or undergarments. Rocky was sympathetic. The seamstress made no comment on the material but pinned the skirt to be re-hemmed. Of course this wasn't BS's fault. Nor can they give me a redo on my son's wedding. But a little compassion and customer appreciation would've gone a long way. Yesterday, I picked the dress up for the last time. Sara saw me but said nothing. I left, then decided to come back in and talk to her, which I did quietly, in the back of the store, away from other employees and customers. I wanted to give her the chance to do the right thing - something, anything to keep me as a customer. I said I wouldn't be returning. Her response was a blasé "okay." When I asked her if she knew why, her comments were shockingly accusatory, and she asked me to leave the store and not return. The entire exchange happened in less than a minute. Management's unwillingness to take any responsibility and heartless lack of empathy prompted me to write my first YELP review. Buyer beware. read more

I went to Berta Sawyer for a dress for a special occasion, the sales person was great and I walked out with a beautiful beaded dress. However, some of the beads fell off when I tried it on at home 2 days before the event. When I returned to the store, I was told all sales were final. The seamstress was very kind and offered to fix it, but I didn't trust the dress would hold up. What really shocked me was how I was treated. A staff member (or owner?) accused me of lying about and when I bought it, insisting it must be old and that I'd already worn it. Thinking of replacing the dress, I tried on a few other dresses, and was told there was "no way" I could be the smaller size I mentioned, even though the larger dresses were all way too big on me. Overall, the service was unprofessional and unnecessarily rude. I left feeling disappointed and disrespected--definitely not the experience you'd expect when buying something special. There were some nice/kind staff people but not enough to make up for the rudeness and being accused of lying. updated based on BS's comments: the dress was in fact not fixed to perfection and I ended up sewing a column of beads on the dress after it was fixed. But moreso, in my opinion, Berta Sawyer's response validates my initial review and how they treat customers. read more

Horrible, horrible! I ordered a dress and it came in unsatisfactorily from the manufacturer. Doesn't resemble the dress I ordered. They of course won't refund me in any way. I'm happy to post the pics of the dress I thought I ordered and the dress they try to tell me is the same. They said they went back to the manufacturer but I bet they didn't. Reordered the exact same dress from a better dress shop and it came in perfectly just like I ordered. What's wrong with this scenario? read more

I called to make an appointment to buy a dress. When I was told that there was not an appointment this morning, I asked if I could just come in and look by myself. I was told that I could not because if I had to ask for another size or anything that would interrupt the appointment at that time. I was told that I could make an appointment for August and I agreed to do that and said that I would cancel it if I were able to find a dress before then. I was told that I should not do that because that would take away the chance for someone else to have that time. I was then very rudely told that I was being difficult and that they don't want me as a customer!! Is this any way to do business? read more

Let me start by saying I never write a review. I bought a designer dress for my daughters wedding that cost $1,400 and I spent $345 in alterations. It was beautiful when I picked it up. Mid way through the wedding the dress came apart. I was embarrassed when a friend pointed it out to me. I brought the dress back and asked for it to be repaired and felt I was due some form of compensation due to the malfunction by either the designer or store owner. I wasn't expecting a full refund but some amount of compensation. Alteration fee, store credit etc. I was told there was no malfunction and that my dress would be fused back and that's it. If there was no malfunction why would they need to fuse it back. I believe I was lied to and will never shop here again! read more

This shop was on my short list of places to check out for a dress to wear to my daughter's wedding. No appt needed, so I stopped by today to see if they have anything in my style. I arrived and was not greeted by the older woman heading my way. When she got close to me, she looked me over, still didn't speak and I said I'd like to see some special occasion dresses. She said they bring them out and "the girl" is on her way to help me. I saw no "girl" on her way, and this elderly woman proceeded past me to busy herself with dresses left in the dressing room. I waited a few minutes and another older woman walks past me to Sales Lady #1 and says, "Ron, are you helping her?" and "Ron", aka Sales Lady #1, says NO. I'm not going to shop at a place that isn't welcoming to customers. Something about me made her decide I wasn't worth her time, so I swiftly walked to the door, grasped the handle and exited. I suppose since I wasn't wearing designer clothes, with my hair coiffed and make up freshly painted on, they assumed I was not a serious shopper I would not recommend this shop to another under the age of 70. That way the staff will be more comfortable waiting on you apparently. I sure hope they aren't part of the "family" that runs this place, they obviously are doing nothing to attract new clientele. read more

Berta Sawyer should be your go to place for any beautiful gown that you desire. I went there for my sons bar mitzvah gown. And now I am shopping for my son's wedding gown. They were lovely to deal with and I'll be back for the next mitzvah. My grandmother always got dresses from Berta Sawyer from years and years ago with lots of success but from the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was very uninviting. The staff was not welcoming and was very bossy towards us and towards their coworkers. My grandmother was looking for her dress for my wedding and it was the most unpleasant experience. During the first fitting, the seamstress was the most impolite, rude, unpleasant, disrespectful women. It seemed like she was in such a rush to get us in and out like she forgot who her customer was, an older woman that is slower moving. She did not listen to our opinions or what we wanted for her dress. She was too concerned with what bra she needs to be wearing. During the second fitting, my grandmother couldn't step up onto the fitting platform because it was too high of a step so we used a low step stool during the first fitting, but this time the seamstress had the audacity to just lift my grandmother up onto the platform. I'm sorry but you do not pick someone up/touch someone that you do not know and you do not know their health issues. That could have been a lawsuit if she got hurt in any way. It was unnecessary and uncalled for. Again, the seamstress was all about the correct bra and said she needed to have another fitting with the correct bra. Yes, I understand she needs the proper attire but you can still fit the dress to her. Making another fitting just because of this was absolutely ridiculous and we called and spoke to Sarah and she was absolutely amazing and helped us the best she could. We didn't need another fitting we just came for the last try on and pick up. Sarah was the only staff member that was kind and accommodated our needs. Before Sarah got there during our last try on the staff member who assisted us led us into the dressing room and was helping with the dress and then heard the door or something and just left the dressing room and left the door wide open. Who does that? There is an older woman getting changed and she leaves the door wide open. That is inconsiderate and rude. The overall cost of the fitting was absolutely absurd! The cost of the fitting cost more than my maid of honor's dress and her fitting combined and she only had a hem, some of the dress taken in, and straps made. Berta Sawyer is an atrocious place to shop for a dress. We will take our business elsewhere because we will not be disrespected like how the staff at Berta Sawyer treated us. read more

Thank you to Jan and the entire staff for helping me to find the perfect dress to wear to my son's Bar Mitzvah. I had been in the shop many times shopping for a friend. I was concerned about the prices, but finally decided to visit the shop to buy for myself. I had bought a dress elsewhere, but was unsure. I came in and was shown many dresses. Nothing was perfect...I shared with the salesperson that I had already bought a dress from another shop. The salesperson asked to see it. I put that dress on...the salesperson thought my dress was perfect. The dress I had purchased was coming in to Berta Sawyer and they sold it to me at a much lower price. The honesty and integrity of the staff is why I won't shop elsewhere for special occasion wear. The alterations were perfect! Best part was I felt beautiful and was treated like a queen. read more

I have bought clothes for every occasion at Berta Sawyer... my daughters' weddings, other people's weddings, community events, vacations, work, play, etc. The clothes are gorgeous, high-quality, and available in a wide variety of sizes and fair prices. I have absolutely no fashion sense, and I am always amazed at how "put together" they make me look! (Rocky is my go-to person... the best! Jan, the owner, always manages to make me look good, as well!) I HIGHLY recommend a trip to Berta Sawyer for that "special occasion" outfit or just to spruce up your wardrobe. It has been over a year since I first visited Berta Sawyer in my search for "the dress" for my son's wedding. Although I visited the store on numerous occasions over the past year - not only for fittings for "the dress" found with the expert guidance and assistance of Jan and her wonderful - and always warm and welcoming- staff, but for additions to my wardrobe, and could have written the review on each and every visit, I chose to wait until after the wedding. I could have written this review on each and every visit because on each one, the experience was absolutely and unequivocally fabulous. I am most certainly an insecure shopper - not always sure of what looks good or right. Jan and her staff are wonderful - they truly paid attention to my likes, dislikes, and always were able to point me in the direction of the "perfect" selection. The clothes are beautiful, top quality, unique, and special. And the alterations - they perform magic. I will continue to visit Berta Sawyer, which has and will remain by "go to" place to spruce up by wardrobe for everything from business, to casual, and always for that special occasion or formal wear.
