It's easy to take public libraries for granted, but visiting this one is a reminder of just how valuable a well-maintained, thoughtfully designed library can be to a community. The building itself is impressive. Everything feels modern, bright, and welcoming, with plenty of natural light and comfortable places to sit. Unlike some older libraries that can feel cramped or outdated, this one manages to be spacious and contemporary while still maintaining the quiet, relaxed atmosphere you'd expect from a library. I stopped in to browse the books and spend some time reading, and I was pleasantly surprised by how much the library has to offer. The selection is excellent, with a good variety of books for different ages and interests. I especially appreciated the children's area, which is thoughtfully arranged and makes the library feel like a place where families are genuinely welcome. The staff were another highlight. I had a question about locating a particular book, and the librarian was patient, knowledgeable, and genuinely interested in helping. It's refreshing to encounter that kind of customer service, especially at a public facility. There are also plenty of comfortable areas for reading, studying, or getting work done. I noticed several people using the library for different purposes, but the overall environment remained calm and organized. The building was clean, the restrooms were well maintained, and everything seemed carefully looked after. What I appreciate most is that all of this is available to the community without an admission fee. In an era when so many activities and services cost money, having a beautiful public space where people can read, learn, study, and spend time is something worth celebrating. Overall, an outstanding library and a real asset to downtown South Bend. Beautiful facilities, helpful staff, an excellent selection of materials, and a welcoming atmosphere for people of all ages. Easily deserving of five stars!

Three Oaks Township Library and Museum - Entrance

This imposing, century-old building stands in the heart of Three Oaks, and houses not only the…read moretown's public lending library; it also contains a bicycle museum and a museum of early 20th century life on the 2nd floor. I've stopped at the library twice in the past week, partly because the library is giving away some older books, but also because the museum areas are so interesting. The building itself was erected about 1898, when the town of Three Oaks clearly had some money. The steps leading up from the front door are marble. As you enter, you see some amazing woodwork and molding along the ceilings, and beautiful chandeliers that hang in the public library. It really looks more like a rich man's private library than a public building. On the 2nd floor, accessible by either an elevator or another marble staircase, there is a room of antique bicycles. One two-wheeler dates from around the time of the American Civil War, with wheels made of wood and covered in iron. There is a side-by-side tandem that looks like it was supposed to be a love seat on wheels. There are bikes from the 1920's through the 1970's, including a child's carriage powered by pedals. Down the hall are 3 or 4 rooms that illustrate late 19th-early 20th century life. One shows a parlor, and it contains a female mannequin wearing a lace dress. There is a tool room that contains woodworking tools as well as spinning wheels and the equipment needed to card wool. Beyond that is a huge wall safe that looks like it belongs in a bank. I don't know why that was originally put in; I did not see any signage describing it. On the other side of the 2nd floor, there are computers for public use. We saw a number of 10-12 year old boys working on projects, singly and in pairs. We also saw signs that indicated that the library was running summer school programs. Can't tell you any more about that, other than that the library does seem to be a real community center. Admission is free to the library and its museum exhibits. You're welcome to take some of the free books, but it would be courteous to leave a donation. Beautiful, interesting building that will doubtless impress and fascinate students of architecture and history. It's well worth a visit as you wander the quiet streets of Three Oaks.
