Love this gem in the area and happy to see a library investment oozing with light and charm. Perfect for a rainy day or any time.

Three Oaks Township Library and Museum - Entrance

Three Oaks Township Library and Museum

This imposing, century-old building stands in the heart of Three Oaks, and houses not only the…read moretown's public lending library; it also contains a bicycle museum and a museum of early 20th century life on the 2nd floor. I've stopped at the library twice in the past week, partly because the library is giving away some older books, but also because the museum areas are so interesting. The building itself was erected about 1898, when the town of Three Oaks clearly had some money. The steps leading up from the front door are marble. As you enter, you see some amazing woodwork and molding along the ceilings, and beautiful chandeliers that hang in the public library. It really looks more like a rich man's private library than a public building. On the 2nd floor, accessible by either an elevator or another marble staircase, there is a room of antique bicycles. One two-wheeler dates from around the time of the American Civil War, with wheels made of wood and covered in iron. There is a side-by-side tandem that looks like it was supposed to be a love seat on wheels. There are bikes from the 1920's through the 1970's, including a child's carriage powered by pedals. Down the hall are 3 or 4 rooms that illustrate late 19th-early 20th century life. One shows a parlor, and it contains a female mannequin wearing a lace dress. There is a tool room that contains woodworking tools as well as spinning wheels and the equipment needed to card wool. Beyond that is a huge wall safe that looks like it belongs in a bank. I don't know why that was originally put in; I did not see any signage describing it. On the other side of the 2nd floor, there are computers for public use. We saw a number of 10-12 year old boys working on projects, singly and in pairs. We also saw signs that indicated that the library was running summer school programs. Can't tell you any more about that, other than that the library does seem to be a real community center. Admission is free to the library and its museum exhibits. You're welcome to take some of the free books, but it would be courteous to leave a donation. Beautiful, interesting building that will doubtless impress and fascinate students of architecture and history. It's well worth a visit as you wander the quiet streets of Three Oaks.

Great place to study, spend time reading, or catching up with stuff in a quiet place!read more

What a great library! I believe it has been in it's new location since October of 2012. The interior is wonderful...lot's of room and the library does not waste any of it. They have community meeting rooms, quiet room(s), an internet cafe room, independant study rooms, children's section room(s), teenage section room, and even a game system room...and plenty of computers in each section (adult, teenage, and children) of the library. I know, Wow! I'm certain that I am forgetting one or two other rooms. The library also has wi-fi throughout the building, no issues logging on. My boys love the children's section of the library. They have computers with specific software/programs for children, puzzles, legos, and nice section to sit and read. Great view of DT Crown Point from this part of the library as well. The library also hosts a number of great events for children of all ages and even adults, I know I'm looking forward to seeing Astronaut, Jerry Ross next month. The staff has also been very kind and helpful each time I've asked a question or for help. Last note...the Crown Point and Winfield libraries operate seperately from the Lake County branch libraries.
