Had high hopes for Bernie's Barber shop. It's a great looking space and just what Hilo needed, I thought. Made an appointment for yesterday and got Bud. Sad to say for $37.69 I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED. Haircut is way worse than $15 Barber I was replacing at another shop. I explained to Bud I was unhappy with previous uneven sloppy cut and was hoping to get a good cut and continue with an appointment every two weeks. Explained what I like and how I'd eventually like to end up in hair style. The haircut I got is very uneven with long hairs sticking out all over my head. Was visiting Hilo and needed to get a cut. Made an appointment with Bud the barber. The place is super clean and very well decorated. Each station has a really cool ring light which I thought has to be pretty handy for barbers. I showed Bud images of how I normally get my haircut and he made me more comfortable when he started asking questions and had me explain my hairstyle (my hair was not combed, I had a hat on) which is very rare if you get a cut while traveling. I got a mid fade, didn't cut the length on top and a line up. I was very happy with the fade, the lineup and the overall haircut. If you are local or just visiting I highly recommend this place. The best experience ever!! Mahalo Nui Loa for getting my son and husband in today and welcoming my daughter and baby and I! The area with the pac man was awesome and the candy for the kids at the end was great! This barber shop was clean and the staff was all so friendly and professional! The barber shop chairs and the rustic style was so inviting and made me want to take a million pictures! The staff listened to what my husband and son wanted and they honestly smiled the entire time! Much needed care and it made me want to cry to see my husband and son so happy and getting the best treatment! We will be back and we want this to be our barber shop for now on we know where to go! Barber was Minh. His service was satisfactory. He cut my son's hair, but unable to do fades. I think he was an apprentice at that time. It was easy to book an appointment online. However, they do have a waiting list for other barbers. Check in system is electronic. I wasn't familiar with that system, so it was a little confusing, but someone was able to help me. Our experience with Bernie's Barbershop from booking an appointment online to leaving with fresh fades was seamless. I loved the ambiance of the barbershop. Good vibes and appropriate for kids as well. My boys loved the pac man game they have there for customers waiting. Their appointments were on a Thursday, so there was a lot of parking. Went in for a simple haircut today. Nothing fancy or sophisticated, just like the service menu said, buzz on the side and scissors on the top,hot or cold towel at the end, whichever is preferred. $32*40 mins. No towel, in an out 20 mins, after I asked him to fix a minor detail. After he finished cutting the haircut did look good and was okay with it and proceeded to pay, but as I got up and took an extra look in the mirror, I just had one minor detail that I asked if he could address. He said yes of course no problem. So I went back in the chair and under the cape and he proceeded to fix the minor issue, or so I thought. Yes he addressed the issue but also went ahead and completely changed the look of the cut on the sides. Instead of a nice blend from the sides to the top like how it was prior, after fixing it now it looks like he just went straight up with the buzzer with multiple lengths of overhang from the top. I even told him in the beginning how I style my hair. No way does this work with the way i style it. Idk if it was because I already paid and he took the cape off but it seemed like I was taking up his time and just didn't give shit anymore. No wonder why he didn't even give me the tablet for a chance to give him a tip. It felt so awkward it's a good thing he didn't give it to me, I just wanted to get out of there. But I take that back, from the start of the service it just seemed like he didn't want to be there. I tried to even be polite and make small talk, but that's all I got small talk, one or two words. He couldn't even ask me if the length he was going to trim off was okay, all did was hold my hair, looked at me in the mirror and said good? Not to mention he completely shaved off my sideburns, like bro my sideburns are there for a reason, it didn't just grow back and become the same length as my sides from the last cut. He's completely different from the other two ladies who I have been serviced from. This guy was just a dick, no expressions, even talked like a dick to a customer who came in looking for another barber. Seeing his name on the availability's I thought that he had a cool name and he must be super chill and cool. Totally opposite. My assumption was a total Dud. I've never written a review and this review has nothing to do with the rest of the shop because I've had good experiences with my other 2 services, one of the ladies even took me in as a walk in so I can't complain about the shop. I'm not a rat and I'm not gonna put the guy on blast, but if the owner wants to put his name for future references for others by all means. I will be coming back here, just never with this guy again. read more

I recommend scheduling an appointment online before coming in. Super easy, should take you less than 2 min. I came a bit earlier before my appointment time, and they were able to sit me as soon as they were ready. The women asked me something no other barber ever did, and I instantly knew this cut was going to be good! my boyfriend just came in for a small trim/mullet. and we are so fucking disappointed. he came home with a shaved head and a rats tail in the back! not worth any money specially $43. i don't recommend coming here if you want a good haircut. now we have to cut all his hair off update to the response, he said he liked it because he was to embarrassed to say he didn't like it. he asked to not touch the top because the last time he got it cut by someone else (with him saying not to touch it) they had cut it off , he wanted a slim trim on the side and shave as the photo had. he had less hair on the top of his head (after you finished) then the back ,when the guy in the photo had the same hair type and length as my boyfriend did. I cut my hair here twice by the same barber and both times I had some gripes. The first time, he followed through with my request for the most part ( comb over, low skin fade). Towards the end he said he'll clean up my neck and it'll be done. When I got home, I saw a patch of uncut hair on the bottom of my neck after rinsing. I needed another haircut, so I tried booking another barber however they were all booked for that specific day I needed a cut-- except for the same barber as last time. So I figured ah let's give him another try. The second time I saw him, I showed him a picture of how I wanted my hair (another low skin fade) but with more of a tapered look. I also asked not to make the fade too high. He said, "Sure, I can do that." I could already feel the buzzer going too high, but I thought maybe he had a guard on. I couldn't see what he was doing with the direction of my chair while he was cutting. When he gave me the mirror, I was shocked to see the fade super high and not what the picture looked like at all. I'm not sure if he didn't hear me or if he just forgot about my specific request. I have a skin condition on the back of my head (which now I am sure he is aware of) and a low skin fade somewhat hides it. Now it is totally visible. The fade on the sides isn't even that clean or blended well. I didn't say anything at the time because they were busy and I didn't want to be that guy to complain. I'm a pretty chill dude and would never bring negative energy into a space like that in front of customers and other staff. I still paid and gave him a tip because I still appreciated his services. Would I pay $40 again for something I didn't request? No. I would like to go back but with a different barber and be sure to book ahead, and hopefully the other barber follows through with the details of my requests. read more
