Dropped by this place on a Monday afternoon after doing a google search for lumber yards that carry…read moretimbers (very larges piece of wood, bigger than 2" x 8" x 10'). The location very easy to find and the yard seems large (although I didn't go back into it) When I walked in, I walked through the store (fairly small...but to be fair, it is a lumber yard) and then went to the counter. One of the guys that worked there (his name was Mike) came over and we spoke about the home renovation project that I had in mind (using a large piece of timber, cut into 4' pieces, strapped together with iron...to make a rustic looking mantle for a 3 sided fireplace). Mike was patient with us and answered all our questions (difference in types of woods, cuts, etc). I settled on a 12' piece of Douglas Fir that they would cut into 3 pieces measuring 4' each. Mike then asked if we wanted the wood planed, which means it would come smooth with flat tops, etc. As I was going for a rustic look, I opted for a rough cut. The next day, Mike called and explained that they had a piece of timber available that still had some bark on it. He remembered that I was going for a rustic look and thought that it might be an option that I might be interested in. Very impressed that a) he remembered my project; and b) that he thought enough to call to see if its a look I'd want for by fireplace. While it took a little longer to get my timber than I was originally told, it was worth the wait. The pieces provided to me are gorgeous and will be perfect for my project.

I went into Hanford Lumber, the Thursday before the Labour Day Weekend. I asked for a piece of wood…read more4inch X 10 inch by 5 feet. They told me that they had an 8 foot piece that I could get cut to 5 feet. They asked me if I wanted it 'dressed'. I showed them a picture of a sophisticated fireplace that I was having built in my home (not cottage) so I wanted it to be finished. They showed me a rough piece of wood and then showed me the smooth sanded and stained material that had been 'dressed'. I paid $69.52 for the piece of wood and $85 to have it dressed. When I picked it up, they loaded it into my car and when I got home my contractor said that it was terrible. There was one inch broken off a corner, the top was rough patches, and the ends were all chewed up. When I called to complain they said basically "Too bad". We use a chain daw to cut the wood, you'll need to cut it yourself if you want a smooth cut. In other words, the $85 charge did not in any way make it more usable as a nice piece of wood for my mantle. As it is, it is not usable. I was EXTREMELY disappointed in the misrepresentation of "dressed" wood. I would never have bothered with the additional cost. At total cost of $174.61 I feel totally ripped off. I would suggest that everyone find a BETTER product and service provider. Central Fairbank comes to mind. I also got wood from them and they were amazing!
