This meadow is named after a historical event took place in 1806 involving Maréchal d'Empire Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte.
Bernadotte became invaluable to the Grand French Army for his decisive victories in battles against Prussians. He was appointed governor of Ansbach by the Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte in December 1805.
Incidentally, this French-born army officer ascended to the king's throne of Sweden and Norway (and became Charles XIV John) upon the death of Charles XIII in 1818. He presided over a period of peace and prosperity, and reigned until his death in 1844.
Here's a backstory of this historical event: it is said that Bernadotte hosted a birthday party for Napoleon on this meadow for the encamping troops while they camped here for a month. Soldiers requisitioned provisions for this rather extensive party from the nearby villages which made the locals very unhappy. I'm sure they were extremely glad when they left the area.
My particular interest of this area is the numerous hiking/biking trails in the very thick woods. I have to come back and enjoy myself hiking in this heavily wooded area in the spring/summer for sure. If you ski, I think this would be a great place. read more
