Dr Russell delivered my son seven months ago, and I could not speak more highly of the care she provided during my pregnancy, delivery, and through several check-ins post partum. More than with other doctors I've visited, I felt treated as a person rather than a patient. I am appreciative that she tended to let natural processes take their course and did not resort to or try to push me towards intervention until I was ready or requested it. Office visits never felt rushed, and I felt guided by her experience as well as an intuitive approach that took my expectations and personality into account. Twenty thirteen was first time began seeing GYN. I had a pap smear procedure for first time as well. Two years after thirty one I felt sexually active. I sorta was late age I know generally people begin during twenties. I will get to the point: At first Dr Russell appointments were pleasant BUT then there was an appointment wasn't successful. I am on a specific medication & I tried to explain to Dr Russell B Control Pills which were recommended would effect my medication. Possible weight gain . No matter how hard I tried to mention this Dr couldn't understand. So after the unpleasant appointment I ended going to the office. Second GYN which hadn't lasted a day was worse. I wont get into details. I honestly hate to be so negative . I was naive & had never been sexually active. It was a very very difficult and emotional process. I had a extremely poor experience here. While Dr. Russell was nice her staff are rude, unprofessional and lack any empathy. I went to the office and when I reached out to see the results of my test - I was misdiagnosed by her receptionist! I was highly upset and asked her to send my results to my primary doctor and to have Dr. Russell call me back. They never sent my results to my primary doc, never called me back and never scheduled my follow appointment as requested. Needless to say, since I still have not heard back from Dr. Russell's office in over a month, I don't plan on ever returning there. Stay away from Dr. Russel and stay away from this practice. This office is the worst. If I could give her less than a star I would. While I actually liked Dr. Russel herself in the beginning, I have had a terrible time with this practice. I have been seeing Dr. Russel for 12 months now. The first annoyance was 4 months ago. She wrote me a prescription for 2 pathology tests. When I arrived at the lab, I had only been scheduled for 1. This was a huge inconvenience as I had to take half a day off from work and would not be able to come back to the lab for a long time. Her staff communicated to me that "I was only ever meant to have the one." Oh really? Then why did I have a hand-written prescription from Dr. Russel for two? My gut was saying that her receptionist screwed up the scheduling and was covering for herself. Dr. Russel refused to get on the phone with me to explain at the time, and never did return my phone call to discuss the situation. Then, when it was time to deliver the results, I asked that unless absolutely necessary for me to come in for an office visit, could they please deliver the results to me over the phone. They said no, that I needed to come in. I assumed this meant something was wrong and obviously stressed about it for the days leading up to my appointment. Again, I had to take time off from work and sit and wait in their office for over an hour to be seen. My results were normal. This office and Dr. Russel have absolutely no respect for their patient's time or stress levels. I was almost about to give up. I had one more test done under the care of Dr. Russel. I have now been waiting FOR FOUR WEEKS for these results. I have called their office more than 6 times. The only time I was able to speak with the receptionist on the phone (they NEVER answer their phone) she said "They are in her pile. You will hear back when you hear back." I am not holding my breath. Time to find a new doctor. I wished I had heeded the advice of the bad reviews when I was first considering going to her. The way they handle patients is completely disrespectful. Adding stress after stress to an already stressful situation. I've been a patient of Dr. Russell's for over 20 years and words can't describe how wonderful I think she is. Made a 3 pm appt arrived on time to see three other patients waiting . I scheduled this appointment weeks ago set up a late lunch so I could make this appointment arrive at 2;50 to be told they had no idea when I would be seen. As a patient. Care coordinator for a family practice / I understand u may not be seen Exactly at your scheduled appointment time but to tell me I won't be seen for almost 90 minutes is ridiculous an unacceptable. Was trying to support a minority practice but I can't deal with that lack of concern for my time as a working person. I work in the medical field I get 15 minute max wait time to be seen at 4/4:30 for a 3 appointment is out of order I will not be back an I will not be referring anyone to this practice. read more

I would 100% not recommend Dr. Russell and her practice. At first she seems kind and compassionate, but towards the end of my pregnancy when I needed her the most, she started to become distant and very short with her responses. Then during my labor, she came across so cold and not sympathetic in any way to the discomfort you obviously feel. I felt like she was thinking 'just get on with it'. Not to mention when I then had complications after I delivered my baby, she was no where in sight. The hospital nurse said she had left for the day! I couldn't believe it, here I was to deal with this on my own after having just gone through labor. Come to find out 4 weeks later, after many episodes of bleeding, she had been negligent during my labor and throughout all this time she was cold, rude and unresponsive when I'd call to find out more info. To top it off, as mentioned in many of the other reviews, her staff is horrible. Good luck getting them on the phone or getting anything successfully/correctly done by them. I urge you to look for another OB/GYN and absolutely don't deliver with Dr. Russell. read more

Dr Russell delivered both of my kids. I had a good experience with her the first time I was pregnant. She listened well, was extremely knowledgeable, communicated well, was supportive. The second time felt much more tenuous. She was less engaged, seemed overworked and impatient, much less willing to explain her actions, distant. I had a more difficult pregnancy and often felt in the dark about what was going on. My experience of the birth involved a few mistakes that were made by hospital staff that left me feeling confused snd disturbed. Dr Russell did not explain what was going on, and was mostly absent. I no longer feel that we have a good work alliance, and have decided to work with someone else now. I have also been frustrated with the front desk staff. They are nice, but things often feel chaotic. Often when I had to coordinate something with them, it was lost in translation. Appointments were confirmed by phone, but when we got there (with toddler in tow), I was not in her schedule. I was given a bill of a patient with a similar first name. When I needed a test done that Dr Russell had mentioned, I called and asked for a prescription. Somehow she assumed I wanted a different test, and after several phone calls with her office, still declined. When I finally got the test done, her staff called to let me know the results. A week later they called again, letting me know, I needed to get the same test done (having forgotten that they had already received and communicated the results). This got tiring. read more

Similar to other reviews, Dr. Russell is kind, calming and very competent during our visit. Unfortunately members of her staff are rotten, uncaring, and downright nasty. We were promised we'd have results back on our harmony results for baby's gender and health to share the news with our family over the holidays. Not only were we KICKED OUT of the office after begging them to make the call to find out the lab results (excuse was they were too busy), they closed 15 mins early and wouldn't help us despite previously promising to have it available. Dr. Russell delivered all 3 of my children and I think she is an amazing OB-GYN. She is incredibly caring, wise, and thoughtful, and uses the research and data to inform her practice. I feel incredibly lucky that she was my OB-Gyn for the delivery of all 3 of my children. The receptionist and nurse in her office are both very warm and helpful too, though sometimes you do have to wait for your appointment. I had no problem getting test results back promptly. I did not want to write this review. I sincerely believe that Dr. Bernadith Russell is an excellent Gynecologist with amazing insight and years of experience, and a compassionate bedside manner. However, her customer care is atrocious and not at all advisable if you have any issues with anxiety or any need for follow ups or evaluation between appointments. Last year I visited Dr. Bernadith at least 4 times in a 2 month period and it was a hassle and a half. Her staff once charged me in full because they claimed I didn't have insurance (taking a full week to follow up with me; I had gotten a full investigation completed with my bureaucratic insurance provider by this time), despite filling out the form and handing them my card and watching them scan it and having a preapproval for another procedure processed at the same time. When I brought this up to her, she showed that it was in their system. They just ignored it and lied to me, with the receptionist saying it was my fault for not giving it to her. Already dealing with the stress of an mysterious illness that was still undiagnosed, everytime I called her office was a chore. I had to repeatedly ask for a follow up for results (I gave up on the results of the last round of tests because 3 messages with the receptionist yielded zero callbacks and an irritated suggestion that I should just wait and stop calling), I was given a link to someone else's family planning results(along with a pricey charge request), and appointments made over the phone and confirmed to me were not entered into the schedule. I came to her with my complaints, and she commiserated and apologized and said that she would speak with her staff. I stopped seeing her in November and switched my appointments to my primary care doctor who, while having a month waiting list for appointments and an office consistently full of patients waiting, actually had someone who cared enough to return my calls in emergency situations, medication adjustment, and explanation of my results the day they were received. It is not an excuse that Dr. Russell is overloaded with patients. Her wait time is only 2 weeks in contrast. I went back to her this week, hoping in 7 months that she shaped up her operation. I saw that she had a new receptionist and was optimistic. After our consultation, I was prescribed antibiotics that I had a history of intense nausea with. I discussed these concerns with Dr. Russell and she told me to just keep in touch with her about it and we'd evaluate then, and that I'd have a follow up with her in 3 weeks. On day 1 I experienced nausea enough to have me sent home from work. I called her office on Tuesday. With no response, and a voicemail message that has not been updated since March 8, I left a message requesting a callback so that I could ask her to prescribe me antinausea pills that I had taken before. It is now Friday. I have received no call back, and tried calling several times around 11:30 to see if I could get any help at all before the weekend. No one answers. I have given up. Once I can actually get someone on the phone, I will be cancelling my appointment and finding someone else. I am not sure whether her current staff, who were sweet and caring enough in person, is the disconnect or whether she just refuses to return calls from messages. Either way, this is unacceptable and I am tired of the extra work involved in being her patient and the lack of care outside of appointments, especially when I am specifically told to call to keep her updated. --- Updating this review. I no longer have confidence in Dr. Russell's insight. I went to see another doctor after visiting her with the same concerns. That doctor immediately sent me for an ultrasound. I have a potentially malignant growth that I would have never found had I kept seeing Dr. Russell, who was mostly dismissive. Stay away. read more

Dr. Russell is hands down the worst obgyn I have been to. I saw her at my 6 week postpartum visit inquiring about IUDs. We sat down and discussed the various options and I chose the one most suitable to my needs, despite her trying to push a heavier dosage one on me because it was a "tom's sort of program" and for every person she had sign up to this higher hormone IUD, another woman in need would get one. Great concept, but don't push that agenda on someone when it comes to their personal health choices. Putting that to the side, she also took blood work from me for reasons unknown, and not explained (still unknown and no results received or phone calls made to communicate anything about it). At the end of my visit I was told I would hear back from her office within a week about my blood results and the IUD. Fast forward a week after I didn't hear anything. I waited a few days and then started calling. I called everyday for a week and was told that they were "looking into" the IUD issue and would call me back. They never called back. I had to continue to call them until finally I was told my IUD was denied. When I asked why I was told they didn't know but were "looking into it" and would call me back. Fast forward another week with zero call back and me continually calling them every day, I finally called my insurance company myself only to learn that this office is so incompetent that they just filled out the IUD form incorrectly and my insurance would not have denied an IUD if they were filled out correctly. After trying to call them another week to discuss this issue to no avail I finally gave up only to learn that in the midst of all that I became pregnant again, which I was not planning on for another year, thanks to this doctor's gross incompetence. I would not be surprised if she didn't have several cases of malpractice against her. Take your business elsewhere and do not patronize this horrendous practice. Dr Russell is a disgrace to the women's health profession and should lose her ability to practice due to gross incompetence. I will be following up with the regulatory board. read more

I visited Dr. Russell today for an annual checkup/exam and it was a pleasant experience (as pleasant as an OBGYN appointment can be). I had a scheduled appointment for 3:30pm but wasn't seen until about 4:15pm. I was a little displeased with the wait time but her staff were very nice and accommodating. The appointment started in Dr. Russell's office where we discussed my health history/etc. then she took me to another room to perform my exam. I receive my annual pelvic exams from my nurse, who sent me to a gyn doctor when something was wrong with me. The best gyn's in NYC aren't able to accept new patients for a few months. I was scheduled with Bernadith 2-3 weeks after calling. She frequently cut me off. She commented on a couple of my skin conditions (which are purely superficial), and kept telling me I should get them "taken care of". I told her I was uninterested in anything cosmetic and kept saying "no". She insisted on referring me to a dermatologist (one she knows) anyway, even though I told her I already had one. This was unsolicited, unnecessary, and completely unrelated to the gyn services I needed. Oh yeah, IT'S ALSO REALLY RUDE. She also asked unnecessarily invasive questions about my mental health history. Also completely unrelated to the gyn services I need. She kept trying to persuade me to change my birth control pill (again, completely unrelated) to another (name brand, perhaps? For profit healthcare is disgusting), though I kept telling her I'm perfectly happy with the one I've been on for years. Because I refuse to go back to her (she made me feel terrible about myself and angry with her), I scheduled an appointment with Dr. Pastore of Weill Cornell in TriBeCa. I asked for recommendations from people I know, and she sounds wonderful. I could have seen Dr. Pastore 2-3 weeks earlier for the same exact kind of appointment, if it weren't for wasting my time with Bernadith. Now I have to go through the same appointment again, when I already have a medical issue as well as a family history of uterine cancer. read more

Dr. Russell took care of me for the first 7 months of my pregnancy until I moved out of state. She was attentive and always remembered the small details I told her. I came in recently for a discussion about IUDs and ended up with a $120 fee for tests she sent to a lab after a short exam. She did not tell me she was sending anything off to be tested nor did I even know she had taken a sample. Again, I was coming in for a discussion - there was nothing to be checked out. It's been two months now and I have been calling and e-mailing with no response. That appointment in February will be my last. I'll be switching doctors. Dr. Russell is amazing! She delivered our son in 2011. She is a great listener, and really allowed me to have the type of labor I was comfortable with. When it took some time for my baby to come out, she fought the good fight with the hospital to I could avoid a C-section. The office is cozy and conveniently located. This is literally my first review on yelp and obviously it would be for an OBGYN. Dr. Russell is very sweet and has impeccible bedside manner. I have a disability and have gone to many doctors over the years who have treated me like next in the conveyor belt. The last OBGYN I went to was not only medically unhelpful, but she also condescended me for what I perceived to be my sexuality. Dr. Russell was interested and kind about my personal life and understanding of the discomfort I was having (which was my reason for going to her). I've had doctors exclusively read me questions off of a generic list with no eye contact, many times cutting me off mid sentence when I offered any piece of medical information that they did not directly ask for. Dr. Russell listened to me. It may not seem important but as someone with so many medical problems I cannot stress the importance of having a doctor who seems to genuinely care about you on a personal and physical level. This kind of attitude towards patients is actually proven both personally and in psychological research to help in recovery and physical well being. Feeling as if someone cares makes your body stronger. I'm happy I've found Dr. Russell and I would recommend her to anyone. read more
