Before I talk about talk about the haircut itself, I want to mention I have never written a review before. I have never experienced service anywhere that (in my mind) warranted a review so stellar or poor that I had to write about it online. That being said, it would be a CIVIL DISSERVICE to not talk about this. I really care about my hair, and I like to do research and due-diligence before getting haircuts. My hair is a little unique and so I always have more than one picture to show a barber or hairdresser to give them an idea of what I am looking for. Being out of state, I have an amazing hairdresser back home and almost always gotten my haircut with her because she does such an amazing job. However, it has been awhile since I've gotten a haircut so I figured I would go to a local barbershop to trim my hair a bit. (THIS PROVED TO BE A MASSIVE MISTAKE!) I looked online and found Bernadette's Barbershop, they had some pretty stellar reviews so I decided to book an appointment. When I got there I met my barber, she was admittedly pretty nice and thoughtful which proved to be the ONLY positive take away from my experience. I showed her two images, one of which was my previous haircut and the other was a photo I found online that looked extremely similar. I expressed that I really liked my previous haircut, and would like to get something extremely close to what I had with only one small change. She seemed to understand and began to cut my hair. We talked a bit during the haircut, usual barbershop chatter, but then I started noticing how long the haircut was taking. I had really only planned on being there for about 20-30 minutes, especially since I had made sure to EXPLICITLY mention that I liked my hairstyle only one month ago. After about a half hour of only cutting the JUST back of my hair, my barber then asked if I previously had an undercut, and explained to me that I had a lot of volume that she did not anticipate. I proceeded to show her the reference images again, detailing once again that I had APPRECIATED the previous haircut and was not looking for a drastic change. She then criticized my hairstylist back home, citing an unusual choice in "balancing" my hair, which I found very strange considering that I told the barber who is ACTIVELY 45 minutes into cutting my hair that I LIKED MY OLD HAIRCUT and did not want a major change. Time went on, 45 minutes to 60, 60 minutes to 75, as time went on I just got quieter and quieter, trying to trust the vision of the barber and be patient for the final result. In the end, I was in the chair for 84 minutes. I was devastated. The barber mentioned that I should come back in 4-5 months for a cleanup cut (which by the way, if you've ever heard this you know your haircut is botched). I apologized to the barber for taking up so much of their time and that it was not my intention (which is entirely true, since I was by no means expecting a massive haircut). Paid slightly extra for the longer haircut (they decided to waive the fee for washing my hair since they did not get the opportunity to in the 84 MINUTES I was in the chair), and went home. I look completely unrecognizable and feel naked without my hair, this haircut isn't just one I didn't want, it's objectively terrible. My curly hair now looks almost entirely dead and curls above the eyebrows while a faux tail that barely resembles a mullet makes my hair look incredibly imbalanced the barber had combed my hair forward into a triangular shape to give the deception that my hair was longer than it actually was, and after taking a shower I realized that she had cut off easily 3-3.5 inches in the front. I had worked several months growing my hair out and had finally settled on a haircut that suited me and made me feel confident. Now I have to wear hats and bandanas of shame for the next 3-4 months until my hair grows back and I have an opportunity to book my hairstylist from home to settle for a haircut that I don't want but looks at least good enough that I can walk around without a hat. I discussed the incident my family and friends who were in awe of how awful my haircut was, I originally was not convinced to write a review but everyone who saw my hair encouraged me to. I have since washed my hair and the longer I look at it the less confident I feel. Please do not make the same mistake as me, do not go here under any circumstance. I did not ask for anything ambitious, I made my intentions crystal clear and I will now spend the next half year growing my hair out. Do not be stupid. Do not go to Bernadette's. read more

I've had hair dressers ruin out my hair just to reduce their one time blow dry time lol and this girl was just like "your hair is a hair dressers dream!" Don't let the name fool you! This is more than just a barbershop! While I was there, I saw plenty of men come in and get fantastic haircuts, but they service the ladies too! I got a cut and color and was very pleased. I had a terrible experience at another salon in town on my previous visit and Dee Dee listened closely to my concerns and did a great job on my cut and highlights. Prices were very reasonable as well. This place is the definition of ambiance! I like a place, especially a small business, to have personality and this place oozes of it! After having lived in several large cities, I find smaller town don't often invest in ambiance, but it's very important to your brand. Bernadette's obviously gets this. I never got tired of looking around while I was there. I'll likely come back back and edit this review soon. I've only given four stars as I've only been once, but I plan on returning to have more well-rounded review. read more

I always get my hair cut by Tennessee and it's always what I want but better. She really understands what I reference for haircut inspo and even makes suggestions for alternate options if what I'm wanting isn't the best idea (for my face/hair). We always have great conversations and that head massage gets me every time. The decor is always so entertaining to look at too, I really enjoy being in this space. As a student the services provided fit perfectly within my price range. And as someone from the SF bay area who has to deal with overpriced services on the regular, this was a breath of fresh air and I feel that everything is priced appropriately! read more

This was the first place I went to for a haircut when I moved to the Greater Lafayette area--I was enticed (as many are)--by their female barbershop appearance; it's certainly cool and eccentric. However, the service wasn't all there. I had an appointment for 1 pm and they took me in around 1:20 pm. The haircut took about 15 minutes with washing, cutting, and styling. I don't believe a lot of quality attention was there and it was rushed. The style didn't stay for more than a few hours and there was no careful eye when cutting. In addition, it's pretty pricey for just split ends, over $40. The hairstylist spent their time talking to one another and I felt out of place. When I tried to join the conversation and asked, "what are your names?" My hairstylist said, "What? Are you going to Yelp us?" Then everyone laughed. read more

First of all, I have only had my hair cut by three people in my 25 years of existence, and all of them were the fanciest of hair dressers at nice salons. Needless to say, when the time came for me to find a new hair dresser in the Lafayette area, I panicked. I saw reviews for this place and I thought I would try it out and if worst comes to worst, it would just grow back. When I got to the shop, I was amazed by all the cool things to look at! I felt like I was in a set for those old "I Spy" books. The staff greeted me warmly and offered me some tea or coffee as the put my things safely in a cubbie. I was very impressed at the hospitality and customer service for such a small shop. After that they escorted me to my chair and I met the lovely JD. She was super attentive to me and my needs to entire visit! She could tell I struggled to communicate what I want and she kept asking me thoughtful questions about what I liked, didn't like, my life style, hair maintenance level, etc. She was able to figure out from what I wore coming into the shop / how I styled my hair, the kind of look I wanted and then she modified it for my hair thickness, face shape, and my personal preferences. I've never had a hair dresser understand me so well! They also scrubbed / massaged my head with the most amazing mint shampoo (which I bought afterwards). JD also gave me a lesson in how to style my new haircut with a straightener and using it as a curling iron! Talk about amazing customer service and really caring about the clients. I was so pleased with the service and the cut, I would have happily paid twice what they charged! I was pleasantly surprised to see that their prices are extremely adorable (it was around $30 for a women's haircut) and it was totally worth it. TL;DR. Go here. This review is for 3rd Street Barbershop (owned by same people, might even be connected through the back?). I love getting my hair cut here. Sadly, a lot of folks in this community will find their $23 price point expensive. I think it is perfect for the quality of services rendered. I started coming here about a year ago after deciding I needed a change from the barber I had seen since I was in 1st Grade (moved away for a couple years, returned when I moved back). These folks know men's hair. You're offered a beer, coffee or water upon entering then escorted back to your chair. I have faith in all of their professionals. Recently, the newest team member, Stephen Riegel, cut my hair. He is next level! Best haircut I have ever had. I've already scheduled my next appointment! If you are serious about your hair - go to 3rd Street! Other grooming services are also offered (beard trims, Classic shaves etc) - I haven't availed myself of them. read more

Great customer service. We didn't have an appt. But they penciled us in for that day anyway ~ when we arrived they took us to the back and the barber was very good at making sure she knew what my man preferred and did an excellent job cutting his hair. They offered us beers during our experience~ which I thought was pretty cool. I would definitely recommend this barber shop to anyone - even families with smaller kiddos (one of which we saw). Came here on the recommendation of a friend and was disappointed with the haircut. The ambience is great, as others have said, and the stylist was friendly. Price was about standard for Lafayette. It's two stars because I get a buzzcut and the buzzcut was uneven. I mean, a buzzcut is pretty simple, but you do have to feel around to ensure that it's even all the way around the head. She didn't do that. She just looked at it, I presume, and missed a whole patch at the top of my skull. I sensed it was over too quickly (took about half the time a buzz usually does) and when I got back to the car and felt my head, I could feel she'd been "less than thorough". I just went home and fixed it myself. After Matthew's hygiene issues and this, I now just buzz myself at home. It'd be nice to be able to go somewhere in Lafayette to have it done, but I'm not going to pay to have it done poorly. :-( read more

This place has a TON of character. It is clearly locally owned and staffed. Each stylist is unique in terms of how they interact with customers. The cuts and service are good. I don't ever feel that a stylist is rushing through a cut. Definitely one of the better salons in the area read more

Absolutely, loved them. Chrystal, the girl who did mine and my friends hair cuts, was very chirpy and a delight to work with. She gave character to both our hairs. I never had two people blow dry my hair, twas like a celebrity moment haha. All the girls were a delight to talk to. I will definitely come back. JD is a miracle worker!! I went in for a consult to repair my neglected and ratchet hair. She honestly told me what needed to and could be done and showed me pictures of what the end result would look like which was super helpful. I came in a few days later for my appointment and after 4 laborious hours my hair was transformed! She used really modern techniques to do my hair -- she removed the color without bleaching it, balyaged my hair, and sealed it/made it super smooth with Olaplex. All of the girls in the salon are super nice and down to earth and honestly do really good hair. I started getting my hair done at Berndaette's when my former hairdresser retired last December. I have very curly hair and it's hard to find someone who can cut it well. Kate has done a GREAT job every time, and she is super nice. She really takes the time to listen to her clients, find out what they want, make helpful suggestions, and explain what she's doing and why. I've had to wait a few minutes now and then, but that is not at all unusual for going to the hairdresser in my experience. As others have mentioned place is totally cool. I am in love with Bernadette's, first off Kate is a hair genius. I have been having her cut my hair for about 5 years now and she is amazing! Always listens to what I want and leaves my hair looking like I just stepped off a Victoria runway shoot!!! But they have gone above and beyond for me doing my bridal hair and hair for all my bridesmaids and flower girls! My hair was incredible all I did was show Kate a Pinterest pic and she made it look even better than the pic the curls were even still perfect the next day! The bridesmaid's hair all looked fabulous and beautiful. The flower girls all looked angelic! Plus I felt like we were just having a slumber party it was so much fun! Had a great haircut here with Kristen last night. Scheduling was easy- they fit me at my requested time and called me the day before to confirm. The shop is awesome- lots of fun decor with a very cool vibe- Lafayette needs more creative, cool places like this! Kristen said they just opened up a year ago, glad to see they are doing well! I hadn't had my hair cut since I donated 11 inches to locks of love over a year ago. I told Kristen I wanted to keep my length but otherwise gave her free reign. She did a great job with the cut- nice layers and body- and was very easy to chat with. Cool lady. I almost forgot the best part- they offered me a beer to drink while I was getting my hair cut so I enjoyed a nice cold PBR. My kind of pampering. read more

Dont even get me STARTED on this place. I love the heck out of this concept. I always go to the barbershop with my SO and was jealous there wasnt a place like that for girls. WELL HERE IT IS. We (about 11 girls?) came in and got our hair done for my best friends wedding and the hair stylists not only cranked us out quickly to some spice girls tunes, but they did a phenomenal job. There were braids that looked like they were sewn and weaved with needle and thread they were so intricate. I have had so many terrible hair experiences in my life that i was skeptical but after Rizzo put her creative magic on me, I have to come back (from Chicago) when I need a haircut because I know I could trust these ladies. I showed Rizzo a couple of pictures and gave a very vague description of really just myself and she transformed my head of hair to reflect my personality. It was amazing! I have finally found my new salon. I endorse this business wholeheartedly. I have wavy, fine, asymmetrical hair. I force my stylists to cut baby bangs for me because I refuse to look my age. It's very difficult for most stylists, but not JD! She took her time with me and my hair and I've never had a better haircut. I also got a full color, Chrystal did an immaculate job. She even offered to die my brows (I have very light, thin brows) which is something I cant usually get a colorist to do. The prices are very reasonable and the space is funky and fun. It's never fun to be the only reviewer with a not-so-great experience and I'm glad to see others had a good experience because I do try to support local businesses as much as possible but this one unfortunately, I won't be coming back to. When I went to Bernadette's, I told my stylist about 8 times that I do NOT want an asymmetrical bob. That's exactly what I left with. I didn't realize until the end what she had done and at that time, it was too late to change it. She even said "If I change it now, the back will look like a buzz cut." Um, no thanks. My highlights also were so dark that you could only see it if I stood directly under a light. Regretted spending the money here, unfortunately but I'm glad to see I'm the anomaly. read more

I went for a haircut here for the first time last month. It was absolutely wonderful! JD was my stylist and she helped me with my 8-inch trim as a brand new look. She was so wonderful. Friendly and excited to help me learn to style my new cut. She took the time at the end of the appointment to show me how to blow dry and use a straightener as a curling iron. The facility was very clean and I loved the quirky character of all the decor! I was offered a cold drink as I checked in to relax during my cut. Even though JD was my stylist, the rest of the staff was walking around conversing with me and being so friendly and funny. I am definitely going back for my next trim! read more

I had been considering a perm/body wave in my hair for literal years now but had been too gun shy to actually pull the trigger on one. I had gone to a few different hair salons in Indy (where I live) to get regular hair cuts but had not been super impressed. They were fine but not enough for me to really want to stay with one particular stylist or salon. A friend of mine recommended Bernadette's in Lafayette, we had both gone to school there and before she moved ti Wisconsin that had been her place of choice. I called and scheduled a perm and cut with Riz. The whole experience really was as great as it could get for me getting a perm in a salon. I feel like she really listened to what I wanted, a looser wave and not a crazy spiral perm. Everybody there was fantastic, Riz did a great job on my hair (I have gotten tons of compliments on it) and they even picked up food for me in a food run since my hair process was a long one. 100% will make the drive there for future hair appointments. read more

I've been going to Kristen at Burnadette's for years. She is an incredible person and stylist and I've never walked away disappointed.
